Call for papers: "Conscious to Unconscious Associations in Design" for the inaugural DESIGN+DISCOURSE lecture series organized by the MA Program in Decorative Arts & Design History Program.

This year, lectures presented at DESIGN+DISCOURSE explore how objects and designs convey varying levels of cognitive meanings--conscious, subconscious, unconscious--through media across interdisciplinary methods. We invite contributions that introduce and investigate aspects of the following questions: How do spaces, objects, materials, motifs, and “things” designedly or unintentionally express ideas or identities in decorative arts and design, and what is the cultural or historical importance? How does design represent conflicting or controversial meanings and associations (like culture, class, gender, and race) and how should these be reinterpreted in contemporary contexts?

SUBMISSIONS
Send abstracts (250-300 words) with proposed lecture title and your current C.V. or resume to dadh@si.edu with subject line “Design+Discourse Submission 2017” by 5:00pm August 25, 2017. What a great topic and thank you for the post. Is there a website where I could get some more information about this call such as when will the lecture series take place and is it open to Canadians? Or would it be best to send an email with my questions to the address above. Thank you so much.
