Entering Pedro Miguel Lock! The single chamber will lift the MS Veendam from Miraflores Lake about 30 feet up to Gatun Lake which is 85 feet above sea level.

Did you know that the Panama Canal was actually the brainchild of King Charles V of Spain in the early 1500, even though it was first attempted by the French, and then later completed by the Americans?

@kimkarringtoncartwright that is a great question! The answer is that Panama has mountains and impossible at the time to make a cut to make a waterway at sea level. Instead they made shallower cuts at higher elevation an created these two artificial lakes. So you have 2 locks on the Pac side to elevate the ships up to the lakes and 1 lock on the Atlantic side to bring the ships back down๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ˜Š

@hanklouiefoto Awesome info - thank you ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป๐Ÿ˜Š I have always wanted to take the time to research it but since you were there I thought you might know best. It had to be a really expensive undertaking but I assume it was worth it for the trade possibilities.

Very interesting facts about the Canal, Hank! Did the French attempt it at that location or elsewhere?
