On Call Emo
Now that I have some spare time whilst awaiting my results, I started reading non-exam books again. Because I'm obviously not emo enough </sarcasm> πŸ˜‚, the top of my reading list is an autobiography written by a neurosurgeon who was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer at the age of 36, just before he was due to graduate as a consultant.
It is a beautifully written book, thoughtful, as Paul searches for the meaning in life, starting from literature, moving on to medicine, and finally in the wake of his own mortality. Even though I knew he died before I bought the book, I still cried when I got to that part, that's the testament of his prose and how moving his story is.
I find it especially resonating now that I am looking after the Gynae Oncology ward, and am looking after sometimes patients much younger than myself, with advanced stages of cancer. Some of my patients are the strongest and loveliest people, and I admire their grace and resilience when faced with such illness.
The meaning of life is what we make of it, and the values we pursue in our own lives.
