We took some Impossible Project instant photos (including with black-framed film, as here) to accompany our new translation of In Praise of Shadows, but didn’t use them in the end. Tanizaki struggled with electric anything, but saved the electric fan for particular concern: “...even today it is impossible to reconcile its shape and noise with the aesthetics of the traditional room.” Today most reconcile happily and necessarily! This photo was either in or out of the book as a contradiction. In the end, none of the instant shots made the cut.
