Director's Series: A Month With Sidney Lumet - Dog Day Afternoon.
A crime drama wrapped inside a comedy, covered in serious drama and a caper film based on true events.
Al Pacino's Sonny Wojtowicz is a tour de force lesson in acting and one of his greatest roles. Lumet's directorial balancing act is spot on and the audience forgets it is watching a film with actors and direction, camera work and editing.
Starring Al Pacino, John Cazale and a supporting cast that practically steals the show including Penelope Allen, Charles Durning, Chris Sarandon, James Broderick, Lance Henrikson and Carol Kane.
The film was nominated for the Oscar for Best Picture, Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Supporting Actor, Best Director and Best Editing. It won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.
Screenplay by Frank Pierson based on the magazine article by P.F. Kluge and Thomas Moore.
Cinematography by Victor J. Kemper. Film Editing by Dede Allen. Casting by Michael Chinich and Don Phillips.
There is no musical score for the film. There are a few songs heard over a radio.

EUGENIE DE SADE directed by Jess Franco. "Could we add some sadistic twist to it?" asks the oh-so-polite English dub of Franco's free-wheeling De Sadian tale of sex, death, incest and power. Luckily the Maison Rouge DVD also has the French dub to compensate. The picture quality is quite good for DVD, with no noticeable colour bleed (see Franco's bright orange shirt). However, the DVD lacks any extras, bar trailers. Still, Soledad Miranda (under a pseudonym) gives a strong performance.
According to Video Watchdog editor Tim Lucas, Miranda was obsessed with premonitions of her death shooting the film. Lucas also cites the close-up of Soledad (first screen capture) as the best close-up in Franco's entire output. It's hard to disagree.
