My brother, sister and I are orphans...our parents died during a Cholera outbreak in 1860...we came to this new place called the Salvation Army...they gave us food and a place to stay...they told me they will find me a job so we don't get sent to the Workhouse...I will do anything so we are not separated...
This is what Victorian life looked like...

a Victorian baby frightened by the photographers efforts to keep him still. It looks like a "hidden mother" or the photographer's assistant is hiding behind the chair holding baby still, you can see an out of focus shoulder behind the chair on the right. The portrait was taken in Racine, Wisconsin by photographer T. Luck.

a haunting Victorian portrait of a 19th century husband and wife in stiff traditional poses mourning clothes and solemn expressions. The photo has been enhanced by the photographer's paintbrush, white to add details to Mother's bonnet, a touch of gold to accent her jewelry, both husband and wife with cheeks painted rosy pink and eyes icy blue. It's their skillfully retouched, unblinking, life-like eyes against their colorless skin that captivates and haunts me. The photo seems to have a presence all its own and I imagine them as fervent spiritualists who attended seances and table tipping sessions.

Just brought home a pile of #millwork and #doorjamb stock to start #trimming out #windows and #doorframes. I'm very fortunate to live a mile away from a specialty #lumberyard with an ancient #milling machine and one of the largest inventories of #antique #knives in the northeast. There's no better way to authentically replicate #19thCentury #woodwork than to use equipment that's almost as old #oldhouse #oldhouserestoration #saveoldhouses

Fantastic French finds 😍 To start, a French fruit-wood commode c. 1900. Sitting on top of this beauty is a posthumously cast (c. 1950's) bronze of Frederic Remington, titled "Dragoons," and framing the two, an ornately carved French walnut mantelpiece from the 19th century. I love this old very traditional cafe at the Schwarzenbergplatz in the 1st district of Vienna - everything is still as it used to be in old Vienna. Meaning the furniture is from the end of the 19th century. It got built from 1861 until 1865 and you'll be served by mostly "old" (and wise 😉) waiters (all you ever asked for!), who still wear a traditional uniform that just makes them look posh! It's such a special athmosphere and sometimes even with live music (today: Violin & Piano), better check it out! :)) #cafe #coffee #19thcentury #oldvienna #vienna #tradition #oldfurniture #cafeschwarzenberg #waiter #traditionalvienna #sightseeing #travel #traveltovienna #mustseeinvienna

Glasgow. George Square has been Glasgow's central municipal square since the late 18th century. It was named after King George III and was intended to include a central statue of him, but after some disgreements with the Tobacco Lords (whoever they were), the statue was never built and instead the central plinth commemorates Sir Walter Scott. The square also features statues of Sir Robert Peel, Robert Burns and James Watt. Glasgow, Scotland, 24 Aug 2017.

#Inktober brings us this #ink and wash #drawing of the Eden Musee, an early amusement center that opened in 1884 on West 23rd St. in New York City. It featured a large collection of waxworks and hosted concerts, magic lantern and marionette shows, and was Thomas Edison's first motion picture licensee, offering movies as part of its regular programming ahead of any other US venue. After its bankruptcy in 1915, its name and wax figures, including those in the infamous Chamber of Horrors, were purchased at auction and exhibited at Coney Island (where this picture was most likely drawn from), only to be lost in a fire in 1928. 🎡🎢🎆

"Spencer House is a mansion in St James's, London, England, and is the property of the Earl Spencer.
The house was commissioned by John, 1st Earl Spencer, in 1756, the Earl requiring a large townhouse to cement his position and status. The architect he chose was John Vardy who had studied under William Kent. Vardy is responsible for the facades of the mansion that we see today. The house is Grade I listed on the National Heritage List for England.
As the home of successive Earls and Countesses Spencer the state rooms of the house became a theatre for the pageant that was London high society. The Spencer family lived at the mansion continuously until 1895, when the house was let. The Spencers returned for a brief while in the first quarter of the 20th century; then again the house was let, at various times as either a club or offices. During the Blitz of World War II it was stripped of its few remaining authentic treasures, specially made furniture, and fireplaces. In 1986, RIT Capital Partners, the family company of Jacob Rothschild, 4th Baron Rothschild, secured a 96-year lease (with an additional 24-year option), and in a highly acclaimed restoration, returned the state rooms and garden to their original appearance. The lease of Spencer house is valued at 35 million pounds in the 2017 RIT capital Plc annual report."

A repost from @dgclassics...today we celebrate the birthday of the great Emil Gilels (born 1916), who, in my mind, is one part of the staggering triptych that is Horowitz, Richter, and Gilels--an overwhelming aggregate of virtuosic pianism. Horowitz is my personal favorite, but all three of these men breathed a very rarefied air, and each one--in his way--draws gasps from listeners. Horowitz was the oldest, and retained whiffs of the 19th century in his pianism. Richter...a stunning virtuoso for whom the most difficult of technical issues proved easy, and then Gilels...capable of the same technical feats, but then also...an otherworldly lyricism. How remarkable that they should have all come from a comparatively similar part of the world--as did Heifetz and Milstein, incidentally. For those who do not know him, listen to Gilels today! #emilgilels #happybirthday #concertpianist #piano #virtuoso #pianovirtuoso #gilels #deutschegrammophon #edvardgrieg #lyricpieces #russian #ukraine #ukrainian #classicalmusic #piano #romanticperiod #19thcentury #20thcentury #johannesbrahms

#KaliPuja2017 Our Goho Family's Kali Temple was installed in 1850 by Shri Shib Charan Goho. This idol of Maa Nistarini was made for #RaniRashmoni originally for #Dakshineswar KaliTemple as this idol was small for a big temple, she re-ordered for a larger idol which was installed 5 years later as Maa Bhabatarini in Dakshineswar in 1855. Our mandir is located in North Kolkata at Brindaban Bose Lane, near Star Theatre, Hatibagan. Do pay a visit, Kolkatans! 🙏🙋☺

Empress Carlota of Mexico was born Charlotte of Belgium in 1840. The future empress married Maximilian, archduke of Austria, in 1857. At the onset of their union the pair were attracted to each other and Charlotte was described as a devoted wife. However, after time spent in Brazil, Maximilian contracted a venereal disease that rendered them childless and led to Charlotte insisting on separate bedrooms.
Charlotte convinced her husband to accept the position of Emperor of Mexico after it was offered to him in the early 1860s. In 1864, Charlotte—now known as Carlota—and Maximilian arrived to their imperial thrones in Mexico. Many obstacles stood in their path—Maximilian was too liberal for conservative Mexicans, he lost the papal nuncio when he declared freedom of religion, and the United States backed Maximilian's opposition. Eventually, Napoleon withdrew his troops and support, and Maximilian was arrested by Mexican forces.
Carlota returned to Europe and begged for support for Maximilian. When she visited the Pope, her behavior was so upsetting that the Pope permitted her to stay the night in the Vatican, a privilege unheard of for a woman. In 1867 Maximilian was executed by a firing squad. Carlota spent the last sixty years of her life in poor mental health and seclusion, dying of pneumonia in 1927.

Painting depicting “Sheridan’s Ride” during the Battle of Cedar Creek on this day in 1864. General Sheridan and 300 other cavalry officers (including Captain William McKinley, who later became President of the United States) rode to the battle from Winchester when the fighting began, rallying their men to hold their position and fight back. It would be an important victory for the North, ending any chance the Confederate Army had of threatening Washington DC and effectively ending Jubal Early’s military career.

To celebrate #Canaletto’s birthday this week, we are looking back at several exceptional examples of his work sold by #Dickinson. Born Giovanni Antonio #Canal, Canaletto was the most celebrated painter of views of #Venice in the 18th century. Famed for his precisely depicted, accurate and evocative #vedute, Canaletto influenced a generation of artists including Francesco #Guardi, Michele #Marieschi and his nephew Bernardo #Bellotto. Inspired by the Roman #vedutista Giovanni Paolo #Panini, Canaletto began recording the daily life of Venice during his apprenticeship with his father Bernardo Canal. In the decade 1746-56 he worked in #England, capturing scenic views of #London and achieving fame and fortune, largely thanks to the British Consul in Venice Joseph Smith, whose magnificent collection of paintings by Canaletto was sold to King George III in 1762. After his return to Venice, Canaletto was elected to the #Venetian Academy in 1763 and appointed prior of the Collegio dei Pittori. He continued to paint until his death in 1768. If you are in #London, be sure to visit ‘Canaletto & the Art of Venice’ at the #Queen’s Gallery until the 12th of November.
