A flower lasts a day but romance is eternal. A young girl plays "He loves me, he loves me not," a game of French origin. Traditionally the flower is a daisy. This wonderful painting by Greuze (from @kimbellartmuseum) is in #americacollects @ngadc through Sunday. #flowers #flowersinart #greuze

An early #MusicMonday🎶 post for you early, early this morning (about 2am for me!) Antoine Vestier, "La Chanteuse Rose Renaut" 1791. I usually gravitate towards the score in hand but here, much of the charm lies in the elegance & complete ease of the sitter's right hand 🤚. A very inviting and welcoming presence without any diva vibes! A San Francisco-based museum recently began texting images of art to people in order to inject some serenity into our often chaotic world. Let's hope the @smithsonian starts texting images of works from #americacollects and other exhibits. What a great example of technology spreading the healing power of art.

The 18th-century French painter François Hubert Drouais is well known for his exquisite portrayals of aristocratic children in masquerade dress. In this detail of "Children of the Marquis de Béthune Playing with a Dog," he shows off his skills as a witty observer of canine expressions, too. The boy on the right places the dog's paw on the strings of the guitar he holds, in a charming gesture of frivolity—much to the chagrin of the disgruntled pug!
This work is on loan to #AmericaCollects from @bhammuseum, and you can see it in Washington through August 20. #francoishubertdrouais #frenchpainting #dogsinart #pugsofinstagram

Take a look at this detail of "The Abduction of Europa" (1726-1727), one of the first important French paintings to enter the United States. This work has been famous in France since 1727—as Noël Nicolas Coypel's response to a royal competition. The work later entered the collection of Joseph Bonaparte, Napoleon's elder brother. In 1815, Bonaparte was exiled from France. He took this painting with him to America, installing it in his New Jersey home. It was so beloved here that Joseph decided to leave it behind as a gift when he returned to Europe in 1839. Come see this extraordinary piece of Franco-American history, on loan from @philamuseum, until August 20 in #AmericaCollects.

Storytime: the other day I went by the National Gallery. Turned a corner, and saw this piece, which was oddly familiar to me. I couldn't place it, however. In what context could I have ever seen this particular painting. It's actually on loan from the Cummer. The museum I went to all the time on field trips, whose layout I know too well, but whose specific pieces I largely cannot remember. This piece, however, is stuck deep in my mind, reminding me of home even so far away. #americacollects #cummermuseum #nationalgalleryofart

David before David (@albrightknox) Happy Bastille Day! #americacollects #jacqueslouisdavid
Happy Bastille Day! On the morning of July 14, 1789, a crowd surrounded the Bastille prison in the east of Paris to call for its surrender. By mid-afternoon, the crowd had become a mob, determined to seize the gunpowder held in the fortress. Following a day of fighting, the governor of the Bastille capitulated, the crowds swept in – and a hated symbol of absolute tyranny was no more. The next morning in Versailles, King Louis XVI learned that the Bastille had been stormed. "Is it a revolt?" he asked. "No sire, it is not a revolt; it is a revolution," was the reply.

To learn more, please join me at 1pm in #AmericaCollects for a pop-up talk before our 2pm screening of Marie Antoinette. This is Yuriko Jackall (@ladixhuitiemiste) signing off. #ngatakeover #nationalgalleryofart #bastilleday #onthisday #frenchart #frenchpainting #18thcenturyfrench

As this still from Sofia Coppola's 2006 film "Marie Antoinette" playfully demonstrates, the 18th century was a period in which anything was possible, fashion-wise. The prevailing taste for luxurious excess offered artists ample opportunity to show off their technical abilities with amazingly lifelike representations of colorful satin and velvet materials, complex lace detailing, gold thread, and feathered accessories. Here are some of my favorite details from paintings throughout #AmericaCollects.

The first room of #AmericaCollects unites paintings that were owned by Madame de Pompadour, royal mistress to King Louis XV. This first detail shows her in a portrait by one of her favorite artists, François Boucher (on loan from @harvardartmuseums). Madame de Pompadour was a member of the bourgeoisie by birth. An important patron, she understood the possibilities for self-expression and self-legitimization through the arts. She also had exquisite taste for art with the sinuous curves, pastel colors, and lighthearted subject matter that we now consider in the "rococo" style. Scroll through this slideshow to see other paintings commissioned by Madame de Pompadour. These works have traveled from her residences to museums across the Atlantic—such as @columbusmuseum and @legionofhonor. After all, provenance enriches a work: the rich afterlives of these objects can influence the way in which we appreciate them today. —Yuriko Jackall, @ladixhuitiemiste
