The Challenge (Continued): Now, what the hell does this mean for getting dressed? Well, it will be interesting, because Monsieur Alaia - or PAPA as #NaomiCampbell would call him - was known as the “The King of Cling” with a penchant for sculptural elements, body-con and even a tinge of S&M.
Here is what I suggest: Let’s revisit the ever popular black clothing of a few weeks back, but mix in elements of motorcycle, leather, spandex and tailoring. Remember that this is not costume or cocktail party – but about incorporating his aesthetic to real life and office. So think thoughtful textures and how to mix them - velvet, skins and crocodile. Maybe even some feathers or some fur. Want to throw in some contrasting white, red or animal print, whose goin leatg to stop you? Think also perforated and laser-cut leather. And knits that are tight then have volume. Think Parisian. And shoulders – think Helmut Newton.
But most of all think of the items in your closet that give you the most power, make you feel the sharpest, the sleekest, the strongest. Because Mr Alaia’s gift was to make everyone feel like a superhero.
PS – Men, same rules apply. Although he didn’t ever design for men, everything he made could be seen in menswear too. Extra points to anyone wearing black Chinese pyjamas, his uniform of choice.
