Knob Creek 25th anniversary. A cask strength tour de force to celebrate the brand's history and lineage from Booker to Fred Noe.

Not only is Knob one of my original favorites as I began delving into whiskey but had the pleasure of cracking this bottle and enjoying with family. That much better. (Even if the bottle was signed to Alyson. Who has the Jake bottle?!) Cheers!

Kilbeggan cocktails in the Scottsdale sun. Mixed up a few Cocktail Courier concoctions to highlight Kilbeggan single grain Irish whiskey. On the left, the Brosna Sour with grapefruit, lemon, simple, and egg white, and on the right, The Wheel, with lime, Aperol, simple and absinthe.

Kilbeggan Single Grain is a brand new release, showcasing 94% corn and 6% malted barley. Aged in bourbon and fortified wine casks, it's creamy & smooth and plays great in cocktails. Bottled at 46% ABV.

When they sent me a bottle via #boozemail, @sipsmith also sent me a mixing glass, bar spoon, and Julep strainer, which are all really useful and beautifully made (especially the swan motif on the spoon). But the mixing glass in particular has rapidly become my go-to. I tend to rely on vintage mixing glasses for every day home use, but there's a wide variety of styles and few of them produce as smooth a stirring action as this one. (Is really like to know who made this...)
🍹
Update: the mixing glass is upcycled from Sipsmith gin bottles, which is awesome for a variety of reasons. But the straight sides are ideal for a good stir; a lot of vintage mixing glasses have tapered or curved walls, making it difficult for the bar spoon to glide.
🍹
I taught myself to stir properly after watching the folks at the @columbiaroom stir without making any noise or splash, and comparing it to my own mess of a stir, and then slowly experimenting until I figured it out: it's all in the wrist, a flick that makes the back of the bar spoon glide along the inside of the mixing glass. (Experimenting this way is tough. Very tough.) Using fewer, bigger pieces of regularly-shaped ice also gives you a much smoother stir.

Another #boozemail I'd like to share with you, a bottle of @sukkahhillspirits' beautiful etrog liqueur. It's like a dusky, brooding limoncello. I decided to use it in one of my ongoing experiments, making a Sidecar that isn't boring:
🍸
2 oz Spanish solera brandy
1 oz etrog liqueur
4 dashes @dcembitterment orange bitters
1/2 tsp acid phosphate
🍸
Stirred, with a fresh lavender garnish.
🍸
Dark, buttery, and unctuous, with hints of citrus and sweetness lurking around the edges. There's just enough of an acidic bite to balance the etrog's sweetness and make it feel a bit more like the original. The lavender really helps make this drink, adding some aromatic complexity to every sip.

The folks a behind @sipsmith gin sent me a bottle of their London dry gin to try via #boozemail. It's a genuine London dry, distilled in London. It has clear but mild notes of juniper, with lots of citrus and floral notes backing it up, and a slight sweetness that reminds me of an Old Tom. Since my tastes lean towards American style gins, with their milder juniper notes, this one is right up my alley, a flavorful but mellow gin that shows off an array of botanicals along with the juniper. It's a pleasure to sip, with a nice body, not typical on a dry gin.
🍹
Here's the first drink made from this bottle, The Mead Hall:
🍹
2 oz Sipsmith London Dry gin
1 oz lime
1 oz pineapple honey syrup
1/2 oz Amontillado Sherry
1/2 oz velvet falernum
🍹
Sweet, tart, fruity, and a little spicy. Lots of rich dark honey notes; I was surprised how much they popped, and I think the honey lends this drink some extra body.

The revamped George Remus, a brand MGP now owns and is looking to grow themselves.

It's a blend of high rye bourbons of at least four years, named in homage to the King of Bootleggers. Bottled at 47% ABV.

I was pleasantly surprised by this... Much fruitier and sweeter than I expected and very smooth all the way through.

The continuing trend is when MGP releases something themselves it's typically quite good.

The 2017 Westland Garryana is here, and the 2nd release of the groundbreaking single malt includes a blend of three different whiskeys--don't worry, all malted barley whiskeys made by them.

52% is their pale malt, aged in used American oak casks; 27% is their five malt aged in new American oak; 21% is where the Garryana oak comes into play, with the pale malt aged in new Garry oak casks. Notably absent is the parcel of peated malt the 1st edition included, with the intention of letting the natural phenols in the Garry shine.

Blended together and bottled at 50% ABV, there are 2,600 barrels in the release.

Black cherry vanilla ice cream on the nose with a palate that shifts from broiled meats to jam and berries, and a smooth finish touched by maple syrup. Damn good stuff.

A little 31 year old single malt on a Saturday afternoon? Why not.

This Craigellachie mixes rich vanillas with a meaty smoky side and tropical fruits together into one luscious dram, a testament to three decades of living in the barrel well spent.

Considering I'm also 31, I feel rather unaccomplished next to this beaut of the same age.

I know it's Negroni Week (believe me, I know) but every week is a good week for Bulleit Barrel Strength. And deploying this in a Boulevardier probably ain't a bad way to honor the occasion.

Bottled at 59.6% it packs a punch while retaining the rich backbone of standard Bulleit.

But if you need to tame the beast, they recommend a dash of bottled Old Limestone Mixing Water (I kid not) a limestone filtered bottled water which matches the famous minerality of Kentucky bourbon.

Looks like it's time to class up this joint a little bit and do some wine tasting.

Excited to check out this diverse lineup from Paso Robles and learn more about these wineries & the region.

World Gin Day is on Saturday and @mainedistilleries and @thebittertruthcompany sent me some #boozemail in celebration. So I made a Gin and Tonic:
🍹
2 oz @mainedistilleries Cold River Gin
3 dashes @thebittertruthcompany olive bitters
3 dashes @thebittertruthcompany cucumber bitters
@qdrinks tonic water
🍹
Built over big chunks of clear ice, with half a lime squeezed over it and dropped in. Garnished with cucumber, sage, rosemary, basil, and a charcuterie skewer: an olive, a cornichon, a cocktail olive, and some gruyere cheese. Yes, cheese.
🍹
The G&T is one of those drinks that is so simple on its own that it practically begs for over-the-top garnishing. I like my G&Ts on the savory side, the perfect accompaniment for a charcuterie plate or tapas dinner. A drink like this is less a drink and more like one more one course of the meal.
🍹
The Cold River Gin is a classic, English-style gin, very juniper forward. It could make for a pretty intense G&T, but the Bitter Truth bitters--some really interesting, non-traditional flavors here--really mellow and smooth out the gin's sharpness and tonic's bitterness.

Wee bit of Wigle Whiskey in the house.

I always love checking out all of their latest experiments and this lineup looks pretty spectacular. In addition to their standard Pennsylvania bourbon-one of the better bourbons you'll find outside of Kentucky-I'll be exploring

Wapsie Valley bourbon: Made with local PA corn which has a higher protein content, resulting in a more savory spirit.

Malty Baere: Malt whisky fermented with Wild Angels yeast provided by Draai Laag Brewing. Aged for 2.5 years in toasted casks.

Afterglow: Whiskey with roasted ginger, lightly sweetened.

MaltMalt: Malt whisky made from four types of malt aged in used barrels for 22 months. Inspired by Spoonwood Brewing's Smoke and Oats.

Quaker Strength: Oat malt whiskey also featuring dark roasted malted barley. Part of the experimental Whims lineup.

Pommeau: A French style spirit made from aged apple brandy and raw apple must. Aged in French oak for 2 years.

That's a mouthful. Better wash it down with a fresh pour. Which should I start with? Cheers!

I'm a day late for #worldwhiskyday but let's be real, I celebrate that most days. Plus this dram is good enough to make that wait worthwhile.

This limited edition release celebrates 50 years on the job for Four Roses' senior brand ambassador Al Young, and for an occasion that big they made a helluva whiskey.

Luscious and sweet, loaded with creamy vanilla, but with enough spice, fruits and backbone to give it complexity and layers. It features four of the brand's 10 mashbills including a small component of 23 year old juice but is otherwise between 12-15 years.

10,000 bottles at $150 and about 54% abv, coming your way in June.

The good ol' boys down at San Antonio's Ranger Creek have done a side by side release and barrel experiment for their .36 Texas Bourbon.

The large bottle was aged for two years in full size barrels, and the small bottle was aged for about 11 months in smaller casks. The result? A unique way to measure oak influence based on its exposure ratio to the juice and time spent within.

Plus- another pair of #whiskysiblings. I continue to demand that my booze come in twos.

The Galliano #boozemail game is strong. And just in time for this sudden 90 degree outburst in DC.

The brand has just launched its Galliano L'Aperitivo expression in the U.S.

As opposed to its traditional golden hue, this Italian bitter liqueur is red, and includes 50 ingredients predominantly sourced from its local region of northwest Italy. It's bottled at 24% ABV.

Suggested serving is with that Prosecco right there for a Galliano Frizzante, or used as a sub in any number of negroni or spritz riffs. I'll have to try that out later!

A cocktail courtesy of some #boozemail from the folks at @unclevals gin. This gin is very flavorful and very different from gins I usually use in cocktails so I wanted to find a drink that would have this gin's complexity on full display. Found this recipe with bitters and velvet falernum and it was a bit like a tiki martini! 🗿🗿🗿
.
The interesting thing about Uncle Val’s is that it's a small-batch botanical gin inspired by Zio Valerio’s love of gardening and native Tuscan cuisine. The flavors in this gin were chosen because they are Uncle Val's favorite cooking ingredients. It's very smooth and good for gin-forward drinks!

What have we here? It's the new Pierre Ferrand cognac, aged first in cognac casks (obvs) and then a 2nd aging in ex-Banyuls (sweet, fortified wine) casks.

#cognac #spirits #france #luxury #brandy #wine #grapes #boozemail
Two new takes on old bourbons from Wild Turkey, Bond & Lillard and Old Ripy.

Part of The Whiskey Barons Collection, each is a reboot of a pre-Prohibition Kentucky bourbon, with a real brand name dating to the 1800s.

Bond & Lillard is a charcoal filtered 7 year old Kentucky straight bourbon. Old Ripy incorporates 8 year and 12 year stock with younger whiskeys as well.

I'm sticking by my booze in twos rule. As I've said, I don't like my bottles to be lonely folks.

Two from Pierre Ferrand here with the one on the left a brand spanking new release, Reserve Double Cask.

The cognac is aged traditionally for 7-10 years and is then blended with a portion of 20 year old cognac, all before before being moved to Banyuls casks for a final year. Banyuls is a fortified wine from southern France.

The result is said to be big on rancio and a call back to the styles of cognac from the early 1800s. 42.3% ABV, $79.99.

I'm really excited to share my latest #boozemail, a gift from @lostspiritsdistillery. You might remember me posting about the Polynesian-inspired rum; this is their navy style rum. The two rums are two sides to the same coin: both are high-proof, and very dark, with warm molasses and spice notes. But while the Polynesian is bursting with yellow fruit notes, especially pineapple, the navy style is full of honey and dark fruit and chocolate notes. Where the Polynesian is crackling with bright fruit, the navy is languid and luxuriant.
🍸
Both of these rums are the product of Lost Spirits' scientific approach to distilling. They start each rum by thinking about the flavors they want, at the molecular level, and then work backwards through the distillation and aging process to produce those exact components. So while the Polynesian is full of ethyl butyrate, an ester that smells of--you guessed it--pineapple, the navy is full of phenol ethyl butyrate, which creates floral, honey notes.
🍸
I had a chance to talk to Bryan Davis of Lost Spirits (which is a fun, interesting experience, given that he's an amusement park ride engineer-turned self-taught mad scientist distilled). I really love what he's doing and strongly believe that what he's doing--like his fast aging--can really democratize the spirits world. But I worried that his methods were going to take over the industry, offering distillers such precise control and enabling such innovation that craft and rustic distilling would disappear. But Bryan views what he's doing as akin to molecular gastronomy: there's room in the world for high-end avant garde cuisine AND traditional, farm-to-table cooking. What there would be less room for are mass producers cranking out bland products that never change. I'm ok with that.

With me not making any cocktails these days, my poor husband has been left to fend for himself. Which basically means nothing more complicated than a Scotch on the rocks. But @shakerandspoon came to his rescue with their Kiss Me, I'm Whiskey box! He whipped up two fabulous Irish Whiskey cocktails with @grandten South Boston Irish Whiskey and the syrups and ingredients they sent. Not only was it really fun, but I think he gained some cocktail-making confidence! Check out the blog today for the recipes and to read all about it (link in profile).

New, limited edition Basil Hayden's rye.

Some of the whisky included is rebarreled after 4 years, going on to age an additional 7 years in new charred oak quarter casks. That's a small component of the juice which ends up in the bottle but adds a ton of big flavor.

Like its bourbon brother it's bottled at 80 proof.

My friends @ourlosangeles were kind enough to send me a bottle of their vodka to try. They are part of the @ourvodka family. Fascinating story about their vodka. They wanted to create a global vodka but with local partners in cities around the world. They all use a global recipe but by using locally-sourced ingredients it gives each vodka its own unique flavor.
Check out their entire story at their web site.
・
I was thinking what should I make with their vodka when I recently saw posts by my friends @cocktailchap & @servedbysoberon making Espresso Martini. So that's what I decided to make. Great write up on the history of this drink on @servedbysoberon account. Do yourself a favor and check out both of their accounts. Fabulous recipes there.

1½ oz @wigglybridgedistillery Gin
¾ oz @clearcreekdistillery Pear Liqueur
¾ oz Dry Vermouth
¾ oz Lemon Juice
½ Barspoon of Simple Syrup
1 Egg White
3-5 Coin Sized Pieces of Fresh Ginger
.
Add the ginger pieces and simple syrup to a mixing glass and muddle together well. Add the rest of the ingredients and shake without ice. Dry shake very well. Add ice then shake till the drink cools. Double strain into a chilled coupe glass. Garnish with some candied ginger if you're feeling crazy. Serve.

Booze mail! #BoozeMail The kind folks over at @wigglybridgedistillery were nice enough to send me a bottle of their dry gin. It's white whiskey based with a great floral flavor, but I also got some nice spicy notes from it as well. So because of that, I decided to go with a fresh ginger route. The amount of ginger you put in depends on how spicy you like your drinks. I tend to LOVE fresh ginger so I put quite a few slices in there. Ginger on the back end. Pear notes. Vermouth to round everything out. Cheers!

And why choose between a couple of great things if you don't have to? Let's crack em both.

As a great Cubs player once said- "Let's drink two!" (or something like that...)

Tuesday night tipple: The new Hochstadter's Family Reserve, a 16 year old 100% rye sourced from Alberta.

Cask strength at 123.8 proof this is a fiery behemoth of a dram for lovers of big, bold ryes. I recommend icing her down after an initial try.

Found a different shot so I didn't copy @gustatoryonline within an hour.

New from Johnnie Walker: Blenders Batch Triple Grain American Oak. It's a 10 year old blend showcasing three grain whiskies, one each wheat, corn, and barley, balanced by several malts, including Mortlach and Cardhu.

The grain profile really shows on the palate with a creamy sweetness, but to me the citrus zest and spice are the dominant notes. And as such it should definitely play nice in cocktails, too.
