The spirit is produced with a four-grain mash bill of locally sourced corn (58%) and wheat (7%) from Land鈥檚 End Farm on Maryland鈥檚 Eastern Shore, rye (17%) from Fairview Cattle & Grain in Culpeper, Va., and malted rye (13%) and malted barley (5%) from River Bend Malt House in Asheville, NC.

The first release is young (matured about 2 1/2 years), but subsequent batches will see more barrel age. That four grain mash bill brings with it a ton of great flavors including vanilla, caramel, maltiness and spice.

It's great neat--and brings complex flavor to a classic Manhattan. #districtmade

1 oz Iichiko Silhouette shochu
1 oz mango-infused @altostequila

Sweet, fruity, and earthy. The first thing I thought when I tried this shochu was "I bet this shochu would like tequila." They're very different flavor profiles, but they both have an earthiness that complements each other.

Frasco is made from the most polished barley, just the core of each grain, and has a commensurately delicate flavor with melon and floral notes. Silhouette has some of those melon notes, but more grain and herbaceous notes. It's a more robust, rustic spirit. So while the Frasco made me think of mixing with delicate melon and floral flavors, this one makes me think of pairing with earthier spirits and fruits.

Uncle Nearest gets its name from Nathan Green, also called Uncle Nearest, who was born enslaved and became the country's first African-American master distiller, teaching Jack Daniel and developing the Tennessee system of whiskey distillation.

Uncle Nearest is sourced from Tennessee and is finished with charcoal filtering, a process that mellows Tennessee whiskey but can also leave it on the bland side. But Uncle Nearest is bottled at 100 proof, so it retains some complexity and heat while still coming across as very smooth and mellow.

I get some spice and grain up front, followed by some green notes and then vanilla on the finish. This is a very nice whiskey for sipping, and I have a feeling it will mix well, especially with a higher proof that should let it stand up in a drink.

First of all, I really want to thank @pompandwhimsy for sending me a bottle of their fine gin liqueur and trusting in me to use it in some of my creations. It is a reimagining of gin with citrus & floral notes to open, and ends with a pleasant spice. It is complex enough to sip on its own and enjoy, yet the juniper is familiar enough to use as the base for your favorite cocktails. Basically what I'm saying is this stuff is straight-up tasty. Also, they believe that a great cocktail doesn't need more than 3 liquor ingredients, so I will work using that belief, because sometimes simple is better 馃嵏

Their operations take place in "a historic 18th century house nestled on a 200-acre farm of hay fields, pastures, woods and luscious rows of peony flowers that burst into fragrant bloom each June." Thought it was pretty appropriate to make a teeny floral arrangement with this vodka. :)

When Sean was in medical school we (he 馃槢) used to make big balcony brunches every weekend with pastries from our local bakery, herb omelettes, and fresh fruits. Now that he's started his residency, these brunches will become a bit more rare and precious. This weekend we had the time (and weather!) to have one of those brunches and I made a light and bubbly brunch cocktail to celebrate. I received a bottle of gorgeous and versatile ginger liqueur from the folks at @thebigoliqueur and it paired perfectly with a few dashes of the cardamom bitters from @scrappysbitters. :) (Also peep the first crop of ground cherries I just picked from the balcony garden!)

The folks behind @fabriziaspirits sent me some #boozemail recently, including a bottle of their blood orange-cello. Fabrizia is a family-owned company in New Hampshire making limoncello and this blood orange liqueur, among a few other items.

I have a huge soft spot for limoncello and the like. I had my first limoncello in Positano, on Italy's Amalfi Coast, and it's hard to beat that. Every glass I have brings me back to that magical place.

First of all, I really want to thank @pompandwhimsy for sending me a bottle of their fine gin liqueur and trusting in me to use it in some of my creations. It is a reimagining of gin with citrus & floral notes to open, and ends with a pleasant spice. It is complex enough to sip on its own and enjoy, yet the juniper is familiar enough to use as the base for your favorite cocktails. Basically what I'm saying is this stuff is straight-up tasty. Also, they believe that a great cocktail doesn't need more than 3 liquor ingredients, so I will work using that belief, because sometimes simple is better 馃嵏

Kilbeggan cocktails in the Scottsdale sun. Mixed up a few Cocktail Courier concoctions to highlight Kilbeggan single grain Irish whiskey. On the left, the Brosna Sour with grapefruit, lemon, simple, and egg white, and on the right, The Wheel, with lime, Aperol, simple and absinthe.

Kilbeggan Single Grain is a brand new release, showcasing 94% corn and 6% malted barley. Aged in bourbon and fortified wine casks, it's creamy & smooth and plays great in cocktails. Bottled at 46% ABV.

When they sent me a bottle via #boozemail, @sipsmith also sent me a mixing glass, bar spoon, and Julep strainer, which are all really useful and beautifully made (especially  the swan motif on the spoon). But the mixing glass in particular has rapidly become my go-to. I tend to rely on vintage mixing glasses for every day home use, but there's a wide variety of styles and few of them produce as smooth a stirring action as this one. (Is really like to know who made this...)

Update: the mixing glass is upcycled from Sipsmith gin bottles, which is awesome for a variety of reasons. But the straight sides are ideal for a good stir; a lot of vintage mixing glasses have tapered or curved walls, making it difficult for the bar spoon to glide.

I taught myself to stir properly after watching the folks at the @columbiaroom stir without making any noise or splash, and comparing it to my own mess of a stir, and then slowly experimenting until I figured it out: it's all in the wrist, a flick that makes the back of the bar spoon glide along the inside of the mixing glass. (Experimenting this way is tough. Very tough.) Using fewer, bigger pieces of regularly-shaped ice also gives you a much smoother stir.

Notably absent is the parcel of peated malt the 1st edition included, with the intention of letting the natural phenols in the Garry shine.

Blended together and bottled at 50% ABV, there are 2,600 barrels in the release.

Black cherry vanilla ice cream on the nose with a palate that shifts from broiled meats to jam and berries, and a smooth finish touched by maple syrup. Damn good stuff.

This Craigellachie mixes rich vanillas with a meaty smoky side and tropical fruits together into one luscious dram, a testament to three decades of living in the barrel well spent.

Bottled at 59.6% it packs a punch while retaining the rich backbone of standard Bulleit.

But if you need to tame the beast, they recommend a dash of bottled Old Limestone Mixing Water (I kid not) a limestone filtered bottled water which matches the famous minerality of Kentucky bourbon.

The G&T is one of those drinks that is so simple on its own that it practically begs for over-the-top garnishing. I like my G&Ts on the savory side, the perfect accompaniment for a charcuterie plate or tapas dinner. A drink like this is less a drink and more like one more one course of the meal.

The Cold River Gin is a classic, English-style gin, very juniper forward. It could make for a pretty intense G&T, but the Bitter Truth bitters--some really interesting, non-traditional flavors here--really mellow and smooth out the gin's sharpness and tonic's bitterness.
World Gin Day is on Saturday and @mainedistilleries and @thebittertruthcompany sent me some #boozemail  in celebration. Wee bit of Wigle Whiskey in the house.

I always love checking out all of their latest experiments and this lineup looks pretty spectacular. In addition to their standard Pennsylvania bourbon-one of the better bourbons you'll find outside of Kentucky-I'll be exploring

Wapsie Valley bourbon: Made with local PA corn which has a higher protein content, resulting in a more savory spirit.

Malty Baere: Malt whisky fermented with Wild Angels yeast provided by Draai Laag Brewing. Aged for 2.5 years in toasted casks.

Afterglow: Whiskey with roasted ginger, lightly sweetened.

MaltMalt: Malt whisky made from four types of malt aged in used barrels for 22 months. Inspired by Spoonwood Brewing's Smoke and Oats.

Quaker Strength: Oat malt whiskey also featuring dark roasted malted barley. Part of the experimental Whims lineup.

Pommeau: A French style spirit made from aged apple brandy and raw apple must. Aged in French oak for 2 years.

That's a mouthful. Better wash it down with a fresh pour. Which should I start with? Cheers!

This limited edition release celebrates 50 years on the job for Four Roses' senior brand ambassador Al Young, and for an occasion that big they made a helluva whiskey.

Luscious and sweet, loaded with creamy vanilla, but with enough spice, fruits and backbone to give it complexity and layers. It features four of the brand's 10 mashbills including a small component of 23 year old juice but is otherwise between 12-15 years.

10,000 bottles at $150 and about 54% abv, coming your way in June.

The Galliano #boozemail game is strong. And just in time for this sudden 90 degree outburst in DC.

The brand has just launched its Galliano L'Aperitivo expression in the U.S.

As opposed to its traditional golden hue, this Italian bitter liqueur is red, and includes 50 ingredients predominantly sourced from its local region of northwest Italy. It's bottled at 24% ABV.

Suggested serving is with that Prosecco right there for a Galliano Frizzante, or used as a sub in any number of negroni or spritz riffs. I'll have to try that out later!

The interesting thing about Uncle Val鈥檚 is that it's a small-batch botanical gin inspired by Zio Valerio鈥檚 love of gardening and native Tuscan cuisine. The flavors in this gin were chosen because they are Uncle Val's favorite cooking ingredients. It's very smooth and good for gin-forward drinks!
