But @shakerandspoon came to his rescue with their Kiss Me, I'm Whiskey box! He whipped up two fabulous Irish Whiskey cocktails with @grandten South Boston Irish Whiskey and the syrups and ingredients they sent. New, limited edition Basil Hayden's rye.

Some of the whisky included is rebarreled after 4 years, going on to age an additional 7 years in new charred oak quarter casks. That's a small component of the juice which ends up in the bottle but adds a ton of big flavor.

Like its bourbon brother it's bottled at 80 proof.

Gin | Ginger | Pear

1½ oz @wigglybridgedistillery Gin
¾ oz @clearcreekdistillery Pear Liqueur
¾ oz Dry Vermouth
¾ oz Lemon Juice
½ Barspoon of Simple Syrup
1 Egg White
3-5 Coin Sized Pieces of Fresh Ginger

Add the ginger pieces and simple syrup to a mixing glass and muddle together well. Add the rest of the ingredients and shake without ice. Dry shake very well. Add ice then shake till the drink cools. Double strain into a chilled coupe glass. Garnish with some candied ginger if you're feeling crazy. Serve.

It's white whiskey based with a great floral flavor, but I also got some nice spicy notes from it as well. So because of that, I decided to go with a fresh ginger route. The amount of ginger you put in depends on how spicy you like your drinks. I tend to LOVE fresh ginger so I put quite a few slices in there. Ginger on the back end. Pear notes. Vermouth to round everything out. Cheers!

Cask strength at 123.8 proof this is a fiery behemoth of a dram for lovers of big, bold ryes. I recommend icing her down after an initial try.

The grain profile really shows on the palate with a creamy sweetness, but to me the citrus zest and spice are the dominant notes. And as such it should definitely play nice in cocktails, too.

First is their Single Barrel Gin. From their website, "We bottle Single Barrel Gin at the precise moment when you can taste a balance of juniper, cardamon, orange peel, caramel and oak." After reading that description who wouldn't want to taste it.
The aroma has a very herbal scent but there's also a sweet vanilla note as well.
The taste is soft and smooth. You get the juniper but also some spice and bitter citrus finish.

Next is their Heritage Cask Whiskey. From their website, "Distilled like a bourbon, aged like an Irish whiskey, and finished like a Scotch." Wow! It also undergoes a custom triple barrel aging process. They age it in bourbon barrels for at least 4 years, then they finish it in Cabernet barrels.
The aroma has a very fruity scent. Most likely from the Cabernet barreling.
The taste has a spiciness from the rye with a dry fruity finish.

I  was pleasantly surprised with some #boozemail from @bluenectartequila, a bottle of their silver tequila. It's a very mellow, smooth #tequila, with clean notes of earthy, vegetal #agave and a robust, unctuous mouthfeel. And, very cool, it looks like it's a single-estate tequila; all of their agave is from fields adjacent to the distillery. So, I had to throw it into my favorite tequila combo:

2 oz Blue Nectar silver tequila
1 oz pineapple
3/4 oz @royalroseme ginger-lime syrup
1/2 oz sweet vermouth
2 dashes Angostura bitters

Shaken, garnished with a candied cherry.

This is such a funky, spicy, fruity combination. Lots of botanical and spice notes bouncing off the tequila's earthiness.

Here's a Sea-salted Blueberry Sour. No reason, I just wanted to make something with @isleofwightdistillery's really tasty Rock Sea Vodka again

2 shots @isleofwightdistillery Rock Sea Vodka
3/4 shot lemon juice
1/2 shot sugar syrup
1 egg white

Muddle the blueberries in the sugar syrup and then add the vodka, lemon juice and egg white. Dry-shake for 20 seconds, then add ice and shake again. Then fine strain into a martini glass and garnish with more blueberries.

Thanks also for providing this recipe for their Arrack Sour (via their Instagram feed), which served as an excellent and wonderfully tasty introduction to the spirit. Based on this drink, I can't wait to use it again... ------------------------>

1 shot lemon juice
1/2 shot maraschino liqueur
1/4 sugar syrup
1 egg white

Batavia Arrack has long been a favorite spirit and flavor of mine so when I got the chance to try out the aged Batavia Arrack by @bythedutch I jumped at the opportunity. In this excellent drink by @sahildmehta a generous measurement of Arrack is mixed with Citron Sauvage a grapefruit liqueur from Bittermens, some spiced grenadine syrup and topped off with cava!

0.25 oz Lemon Juice
Top up with Cava * A regular grenadine syrup is dressed up by adding 1 oz of Kummel, and 2 oz of black pepper tincture to a batch of grenadine syrup.

The Limoncello is spot on. The flavor is perfect.
The aroma from the Blood Orange is fantastic. The taste has a sweetness from the Blood Orange. I could just drink this by itself.

Finally diving into the 2017 edition of @drinkhighwest's Bourye, sporting a jackalope on the label in homage to its own hybrid character as a blend of straight rye and straight bourbon.

The rye falls in at 95% rye and 5% malted barley and the bourbon is 75% corn 21% rye and 4% malted barley. The juice is between 10 and 14 years old and it's all bottled up at 46% ABV.

It's big and rich, especially on the nose, also offering an array of baking spices and everything from baked apples to cedar wood. Full review coming soon on @drinkdistiller.

Luckily this recent wave of wishful thinking coincided with the launch of @diplomaticorum's new white sipping rum that they sent as some #boozemail to try. Naturally looked for a recipe in the @smugglerscovesf to give the rum a taste test. :)

The latest from Glenmorangie, Bacalta, the 8th in their private edition series. You've probably already seen this on about 75 other whisky IG accounts this week, but hey I deserve my chance too.

Bacalta is Gaelic for 'baked' and signifies the finishing process for the whisky which occurred in bespoke, sun baked casks which had held Malmsey Madeira. Glenmo commissioned the casks specifically for this project.

It worked really well - this was a lovely light, refreshing - but still punchy - drink perfect for early spring. ------------------------->

Here's a #boozemail that's long overdue. The folks behind @iichiko_shochu sent me a bottle of their barley shochu...a really long time ago. And I sat on it for a really long time. Because shochu is a really different animal than what I'm used to, and for a long time I didn't really know how to do it justice.

Shochu is a Japanese distilled spirit, made from rice, or barley, or sweet potato, or a variety of other materials. And it's distilled to a fairly low proof; Iichiko, made from barley, is a low 50 proof. It's clear and incredibly delicate, with subtle floral notes and nutty grains. Its very easy to sip neat.

But it's a little tricky to mix, because those flavors are easily overpowered by other spirits. Even a delicate fruit eau de vie can swallow it up. But I discovered that shochu likes dry vermouth and soft gins--two other spirits with delicate botanicals that elevate and highlight the shochu. Stay tuned for more...

Because shochu is a really different animal than what I'm used to, and for a long time I didn't really know how to do it justice. 🍸 Shochu is a Japanese distilled spirit, made from rice, or barley, or sweet potato, or a variety of other materials. And it's distilled to a fairly low proof; Iichiko, made from barley, is a low 50 proof. It's clear and incredibly delicate, with subtle floral notes and nutty grains. Its very easy to sip neat. 🍸 But it's a little tricky to mix, because those flavors are easily overpowered by other spirits. Even a delicate fruit eau de vie can swallow it up. But I discovered that shochu likes dry vermouth and soft gins--two other spirits with delicate botanicals that elevate and highlight the shochu. Stay tuned for more...

Their amaro is F A N T A S T I C - It tastes delicate and citrus-vermouthey at first, but then finishes clean with the classic amaro bitter bite. Plus the bottle artwork is beautiful! Going to have to schedule a trip to CA to pick up some more of this!

I don't often veer into cream liqueurs, but this one was quirky enough to try out: Magnum Cream is made from Speyside Scotch whisky and Dutch cream. And it's hard to beat the milk can vessel! Pretty enjoyable as these things go.

In November 2015, a visit to Courvoisier included a unique tasting in their cellar. We sampled three Cognacs which were about to be blended and married together for the next year.

The result, at long last, is this- the Courvoisier Paris Golden Age Blend. The three distinct barrels used for the blend include one Borderies, one Grand Champagne, and a vintage 1989 barrel distilled a century after the grand opening of the Eiffel Tower.

The blend celebrates Courvoisier's history with Paris and the Eiffel Tower, as it was served at the tower's official opening party.
