1815 E 2nd Street rent striking Mariachis and tenants cornering Councilman Jose Huizar
Hundreds gathered in Boyle Heights for the annual celebration of El Dia de Santa Cecilia, the patron saint of musicians. The rent striking mariachis and other tenants of 1815 E 2nd Street cornered Councilman Jose Huizar backstage for more than 20 minutes, demanding concrete action in support of their struggle against the outrageous rent increases and eviction proceedings by owners BJ Turner and Steve Goodman. Later they shared the story from the stage while other LATU Eastside Local members passed out flyers about our upcoming action to the entire crowd.
We should always expect empty words from politicians. We'll see what he ends up doing in the coming days as these struggles intesify. Will he stand with the tenants or remain "neutral" and, in essence, side with the rich landlords who are displacing Boyle Heights tenants for the sake of making more money?
