Every now and then, I’ll run into old acquaintances that I haven’t seen since college, and they aways make a (kind) comment about how much weight I’ve lost since they first knew me. No, I wasn't extremely overweight, but coming to college in the US and eating a MUCH higher calorie college diet than I was used to, soon resulted in me going up quite few pant sizes! Nothing wrong with that, but the food I was eating in college was higher in saturated fats and salt that the veggie and spice-oriented diet I grew up with.
It was a combination of changes that helped me get back to a healthy weight, including cooking a lot more and eventually running long distances, but the biggest thing that changed was the way I looked at myself. It was in learning to see my body as an instrument to fuel, train and nourish, rather that an object to starve, deprive and punish, that I found true healing from unhealthy eating habits that ironically didn’t result in the lean body I so desired. If I could say anything to my old self that used to struggle daily with body image, it would be that we are created for a purpose that is far greater than trying to starve ourself into a certain size. We only have one life to live, so please don’t fall for the lie that your self-worth is an inverse relationship to your pants size. So, if you have ever struggled with your body image and are reading this, please be reminded: You are beautiful, you are here for a reason. You are so valuable and our bodies are capable of so much, we just have to nourish and love ourselves instead of hating what we see in the mirror and tearing ourselves down every day. Yes, please eat healthy foods in general and workout but don’t do it to punish yourself, do it to love yourself. This is a lifelong lesson I have to continually learn, and I know so many women & men who deal with this too. If you’ve ever struggled with this and need someone to talk to, I’m always here for you. We need to stop tearing ourselves down and start loving ourselves more ❤
