Cervical cancer awareness month continues! ❤

@Regrann from @karentangmd - "What happens if I have an abnormal Pap smear?" Depending on the abnormality and your age, your doctor will either repeat the Pap smear in one year, or perform what's called a *colposcopy*. Colposcopy is basically looking closely at the cervix (opening of the uterus), and using a stain to identify cells that have HPV. Small biopsies may be taken, which are usually either painless or may feel like a quick pinch. Based on the pathology results, your doctor will either recommend close monitoring, or treatment to prevent progression to cervical cancer. The majority of women needing a colposcopy will not need treatment, and only a very small percentage will actually have cancer. Abnormal Paps and colposcopies are quite common!
Here we are demoing a new colposcope that is small and portable, and has been used in developing countries in Africa for cervical cancer screening. The clear image and screen also allow for teaching, as we train UPenn residents in colposcopies.

I was invited to have a cervical cancer screening last year and was really hesitant to go have it done, as I've never had a successful swab test involving a speculum. However, I know how important these tests are, even though I've never achieved sex. It was excruciating. Tried several times, even with me inserting the speculum and failed. The nurse talked about having Diazepam beforehand to relax the muscles but that isn't going to stop the pain.
In one of my previous posts, I'd mentioned my referral to Leeds was declined, but I received a letter the other day for a colposcopy appointment at Leeds. Rather unexpected... I'm assuming my referral was approved in the end, but after everything I've read up on about colposcopies, they're for when abnormal cells have been after a smear? Correct me if I'm wrong!
If anyone suffers with pelvic pain, vaginismus or vulvodynia, have any of you guys managed a successful smear test before? Quite nervous about attending the appointment and not sure what to expect :/

When did you last have a smear? Most women in the U.K. aged 25-64 are offered a smear every three years. This is because usually, cell changes happen slowly over a number of years.

How to prevent cervical cancer?

If detected early, cervical cancer is one of the most successfully treatable cancers. This can be achieved through CBC based Pap smear and HPV-DNA testing. If HPV screening is positive, referral for Colposcopy is recommended.

Colposcopy. I can certainly think of better things to be doing on a Monday morning but I can’t think of many things that are more important when it comes to looking after my health.
It turns out that I couldn’t actually have a colposcopy this morning because I’ve still got to heal from a procedure that I had just before Christmas, so my appointment has been rescheduled. It doesn’t matter that it’s been moved, the most important thing is that it’s going to happen.
Ladies, if you’ve not had a smear test for a while or think you may be due one, then call your doctor to make an appointment. It could be the most important thing you do this year.

So even though I’m 25 I’ve had 4 smears in my life. My first one at 20 & I was so so scared..but was so shocked how quickly it was and how it didn’t hurt. Since then it doesn’t bother me, I no longer get nervous. Being 20 years old & hearing the test came back abnormal was so frightening, off I went for more test and treatment. Luckily it wasn’t Cancer but I have something that can easily turn into cancer at any time so I have to be “on it” with regular smears, ultrasounds & Colposcopy. Please do take your health first, go and book your smear and tell all your female friends ect 👍🏼 #smeartest #smearcampaign #smearforsmear #important #females #colposcopy #ultrasound #preventionisbetterthancure #cervicalcancerawareness #saveyourlife #5minuteofyourtime #pbloggeruk #mummyblog #healthisimportant #putyourselffirst #jostrust #breakthestigma #spoonieblogger #berkshireblogger #sisterinlaws #tellyourstory #tellyourfriends #lifeisshort #selfcare #bookthatappointment #thepricefamily

This is something close to my heart and something I feel strongly about. It only takes 5minutes to have a smear, please dont put if off. 💙My Story💙
At the age of 22 I had my first smear. I had CIN1 abnormal cells, I found this out after I was went to the Rosemary Harkin clinic in Dundalk for my first colposcopy.Im not going to lie, I was scared and googling it didnt help. The fear of the unknown really. I have to say the staff in the hospital were lovely. When I got called by the nurse and brought down to the doctors room where I have to say they really put your mind at ease and answer any queations you may have. So a colposcopy is a more in depth smear with a camera, they use 2 different solutions to see how the cells react. While the doctor is doing the colposcopy the nurse is stood by your side talking you through it and before you know it, its all over with. I went for my annual smear for the next 5years. It was in the fifth year (2016) that when I went for my smear my cells had changed again. I was sent back to Dundalk for another colposcopy, I had CIN3 cells this time. I was sent for a punch biopsy about 2weeks after the colposcopy. After the punch biospy I recieved a letter that I needed to go back to the clinic where my abnormal cells were removed using Lletz.Lletz is a heated wired hoop that they use to burn/remove the abnormal cells from your cervix. I had a local anesthetic before they removed my cells with lletz. You need a few days rest after this. I dont know how I would of managed through 2016 without the support of my fiancè coming to every doctors and hospital appointment with me and the support of my family and few close friends. I was back after 6months to see how my cells were after the lletz and in december 2016 I found out that my cells were normal. Im now 28 and have a beautiful 5month old princess a yr on. Im back this year for my smear and im not going to lie im scared because i dont know what the results this time will be. Im staying positive though because if anything that my experience has taught me is to live each day and achieve your goals. No ifs or buts just go for it. So please take those 5mins it could save your life.

Well that’s that then... phone call last night from the lady who performed my colposcopy biopsy on my cervix. From have slightly abnormal cells during smear I now have severely abnormal changes and need to have emergency treatment to remove all abnormal cells. She wants me to put if treatment for a minimum of 2-3 months. She asked if I had treatment today and I said no and she asked if I ‘spontaneously fell pregnant’. Nope body is just being a prick. .

Day 17 - Shoutout to your doctor 🥄 (CW: sexual assault)
This is a picture of me with my therapist’s dog. My therapist regularly saves my life. She is the most important person on my treatment team and a really important person in my life. Right now she is the person I talk to the most about my illnesses and pain and the person who knows the most about how bad they are. She is always validating and supportive and I could not get through life without her.
Another very important person on my treatment team is my gynecologist. During the past couple years, I had severe dysplasia on my cervix and needed 3 colposcopies, a LEEP, and a cone surgery. Because I have a history of sexual assault, all of these things were very traumatic and I could not have gotten through them without my gynecologist. She is the nicest, most caring and supportive doctor I’ve ever had. She’s gone out of her way so many times to accommodate my emotional needs, advocate for me and make me feel safe. I also have chronic pelvic pain so paps and any pelvic exams in general are super painful and emotionally draining. She does everything she can to make exams as easy and painless as possible. She also calls me and texts me regularly, sometimes just to see how I’m doing. Every time I see her she remembers everything we’ve talked about and she genuinely cares about not just my overall physical health, but my mental health as well. She is an amazing person and she makes it possible for me to take care of my gynecological health after being too afraid to even get a Pap smear for almost 10 years. She literally saved my life and caught my pre-cancer before it spread.
I missed day 15 and 16 of the spoonie Christmas challenge somewhat purposely so I’ll address them really quick.
Day 15 was “throwback of healthier days” and I was unsure what to post as I’ve always had health issues, even as an infant. My health has gotten much worse over the years but it’s never been great.
Day 16 was “best advice ever received” and I wanted to wait until today to answer. I really hate getting unsolicited medical advice (as do most spoonies) so instead of thinking through all the advice I’ve gotten (cont. in comments)

I've been struggling. I had to deactivate my Instagram account because I just couldn't handle seeing everyone's happiness. As horrible as that sounds.
I'm ending my year hanging on a thread, waiting for the results of my biopsy. I'm tired. I don't want to socialize. I just want to hide. But that's not possible. Gotta work. Gotta live.
Women's health is not something that seems to be on too many people minds. There's very little compassion during the process also. For the doctors and nurses who work within the field of women's health, I appreciate you, however, while this is a job for you, please don't treat your patients as if this isn't a traumatic experience for them.
First off, before you have a colposcopy the question should be asked if you have had any kind of sexual trauma, because this procedure which is so standard for you can be extremely triggering for those that have been raped and abused, making the procedure more than just a physically painful one.
Second, communicate with your patients. Walk them along as your complete the procedure. Talk to them. Check if they are alright. As if they are okay enough to proceed instead of being abrasive and cold.
I imagine not all doctors are like this and I some how just draw the short straw.
I'd like to see women treated as human beings during an already traumatizing experience. I want them to feel like they aren't alone in it all. I want them to know that they aren't somehow totally worthless because of this.

I had a LEEP procedure this morning. Here's part of my cervix that was deemed precancerous after a biopsy from a colposcopy which was scheduled because of abnormal pap results. Even with the excellent and gentle care I received, I found this procedure to be absolutely torturous. Horrible. I'm sharing because I very rarely hear about vaginal/cervical/reproductive health issues from women I actually know, even though they are so common. My Medicaid (under constant political threat) afforded me this life saving procedure. My friend, Carissa, inspired me to be brave and keep current with paps. Take care, y'all.

Hokay! #colposcopy done. The doctor said none of my cervix looks reactive enough to even warrant a biopsy (scraping cells off the wall of the cervix) so that's a relief. Basically we're hoping that the hpv will clear up on its own, otherwise after the baby is born we'll see what our options are. Meh this stuff is always scary...

I remember like it was yesterday.
I was in huge gynecology teaching room, with just me and a single obgyn. There was so much space around me and I felt so exposed as I endured my seventh colposcopy. The ob (who was not my regular doctor but someone I was sent away to because I 'wasn't listening' to my other doctors) looked me straight in the eyes and said "You refuse the hpv vaccine, you refuse the leep- there is nothing we can do for you."
.
My heart sank. Did I just receive a death sentence? Was I going to get cervical cancer because my doctors couldn't help me heal? What was I going to do?
.
It was in this moment of complete gynecological rock bottom did I make a choice- I would do it myself. If they weren't going to help me, then I would have to help myself.
.
Healing hpv and cervical dysplasia takes this sort of choice. You are either all in or you are not. You are either committed to figuring out your body or you are not. There is no half way in healing.
.
I spent three long years researching and compiling all the information I could find about the cervix and Cervical Dysplasia...I even looked at history. There is SO MUCH we are not told about the cervix and how to keep it healthy and well. Like, it is blasphemous to know that they are performing LEEPs on women before women know all this. BLASPHEMOUS!
.
In honor of the holidays, I have taken $100 of my 1:1 Educational Deep Dive Session, where for 2.5 hours I download to you all the information I know of about the cervix and how to heal. This is a personalized session over ZOOM, which you receive a recording of after (as well as a couple of other goodies). If you are ready to receive the sex education you NEVER received, then this session is for you. You will be left feeling INFORMED, AWARE and EMPOWERED to take care of your cervix.I guarantee it.

today I came to Italy and I’m going to stay until March... and after a very much needed nap I got an email from my Ob in the US because my Pap smear came out abnormal... I had to call through Skype so she told me I have to have a #colposcopy (image) to see... and she told me that the result could affect my future pregnancies... I called my insurance and they referred me to one of the best clinics in Rome, #MaterDei ... I also wrote my RE and he calmed me down a lot.., this showed my mom how great of a person he is... so please, #prayers #goodvibes and anything you can send is welcomed... funny I’m watching the pursuit of happiness on the tv... I would love to have some positivity... I’m more and more crushed...

Okay this made me giggle! However, I had a rough night’s sleep! The hot water bottle to help the cramps was making me overheat, so I had the fan on too! The mixture of temperatures plus the general stress of whether i would be well for school equalled a bad night. Luckily my deputy head is understanding - she knows I hate having time off! Drives me mad sitting at home not knowing how my class are doing (or worse, knowing that their behaviour is poor!) Well, I’ll be back tomorrow full of wrath (and ibuprofen!) #colposcopy #lletz #cramps #crampsfromhell #lletzprocedure #precancerouscells #cin2 #cin3 #gyno #womenshealth

You may remember a few weeks ago I posted a story after just having a smear test... reminding and urging all you ladies of the importance of having yours done.
I came home this evening to a letter because the hospital found abnormalities with my results.
They maybe pre-cancerous they may not be... I have to go for further tests... a colposcopy; a screening and possible biopsy
The point is ladies I feel fine... I'm a recently turned vegeterian, I work out daily and I feel good... no pain, no symptoms... But if it wasnt for my smear test I would have no idea that something isn't right.
So please please please... look after yourself and get yourself checked

#ginecologiaoncologica #cancerginecologico #nic #colposcopy #cevicalcancer #endometrialcancer #vulvarcancer #ovariancancer #vaginalcancer #fuckcancer #staystrong #nevergiveup

2015 I was diagnosed type 2 diabetic, my annual came out abnormal, & my throat had a lump. I was seeing doctors, specialists, and getting tests and labs done. I can say I’ve been pretty good at keeping my sugars leveled. It’s tricky if you don’t have an idea. I need to fuel my body every 3 hours. I have to eat and my body loves healthy food & drinks. I’ll accommodate periodically if I have to.
I am Jenny & I 4C complete healing 🙌🏼 #onlyjesus #healone #jenny4cramirez #nocervixcancer 😉 #colposcopy #jesusheals #secondopinion #godguides #prayerlife #stronger #betternotbitter

My brain has been in a million different places this week...but one thing that stays constant is the overwhelming love and support that I have received! On Monday, I had a little procedure done to take biopsies of my cervical cells to send out for any abnormalities. The procedure itself was routine and honestly nothing major but my anxiety was through the roof! I am so grateful for my support system for all of their love. Thank you, thank you, thank you to all of my family and friends for their texts, emails, prayers, good thoughts and hugs to soothe this anxious girls heart ❤️

Ok, real talk: I just opened one of the scariest letters I’ve received in a LONG time. My smear test results came back and I tested positive for HPV and for abnormal cervical cells, which means I have to go for a colposcopy (an examination of my cervix where a small sample of tissue is removed) 💕
.
I’d love to say that I was totally chill as I opened this letter but nah - I freaked the fuck out 😬 And that’s ok. It’s important to feel your feelings. And any letter that mentions “cancer” is legit going to make even the strongest of people have a wobbly moment y’know? 🤷🏻‍♀️
.
But after freaking out, I decided to check in with my inner circle (the babes in my life who I’m closest to) and was reminded that one of my friends went through the same thing recently. In fact lots of women have HPV and abnormal cervical cells, and lots of women go through colposcopies. 4 in 10 women who have one will have a normal result, 6 in 10 will have an abnormal result and an abnormal result doesn’t mean cancer 💖
.
So why am I sharing this? Two reasons:
1. If you haven’t had your smear yet or haven’t had one for a while BOOK THE FUCK IN! I promise you they don’t hurt and even though receiving a letter like this is scary, it’s better to know these things sooner rather than later.
2. This is scary shit and the scariest thing is feeling like it’s just you. We gave a lot of cultural shame in talking about our wombs, we have a lot of fear of talking openly about the experiences we’re going through in case we’re seen as attention seeking, we get told that we should cope and not worry and we call cancer “the c word”. The more of us who are able to talk openly about things that are VERY NORMAL but very scary, the more women won’t have to feel as though they’re the only ones dealing with this shit. If you’re going through this right now, you are not alone and I’m here for you 💕💖💕
.
There’s a third reason too - I’m scared. This is some scary shit and I know that the more open I am, the less power that fear can have over me. The darkness will always disappear when we turn a light on it 💫
