Fam, BIO PLASTIC CUTLERY GOES TO LANDFILL.
Today I called the local Materials Recovery Facility…aka our Recycling Plant...to check in on COMPOSTABLE CUTLERY. (I recorded this all & put on my IG story p.s.) I also live-chatted because I am thorough af.
So it all began when my Recycling App informed me that cornstarch compostable cutlery is to be put in the Green Organics bin. When speaking with the lovely rep from the MRF, she advised that compostable cutlery is not allowed in the organics bin & that I should put the compostable cutlery—to my surprise—in the Yellow RECYCLING Bin. Only materials that break down quickly w/o sunlight—food scraps, paper, green waste.
But what would it be recycled into?
After a brief pause, she decided to call me back with more info. Fair. So I went to the live chat, where I was told the SAME. To which I asked,
But what would it be recycled into?
Now we get somewhere. PLASTIC cutlery can be recycled. BIO PLASTIC cutlery GOES TO LANDFILL. So “compostable” plastic is misleading, bc it in fact goes to landfill! How are we as consumers supposed to know which bin to use? Even our recycling centre staff are confused what to do with the stuff!
WHAT A WASTE! Avoid all this bull$h!t & just bring your own cutlery. Or ask to borrow a fork or spoon. Or abstain! (GASP) It is time to start aligning our ACTIONS with our values. If you are a food vendor, get the wooden cutlery, it’s actually compostable!
Do your research. Call your council. And if you, like myself, have been burying “compostable” cornstarch & bio-plastic spoons in your garden over the years, do your dirt a favour & extract the frauds! #iquitplastics
AMAZING MERMAID CROWN BY @summersdreaming 💙🐚✨
Can schools follow suit? A local cafe near us has started using Compost Me products - from sustainable wooden cutlery and biodegradable food boxes to cups made of plant based, biodegradable material. 👏👏 Many secondary schools in our area use plastic disposable cutlery and other single use plastics in their canteens on a daily basis which needs to change. We would like to contact our own schools in trying to make change happen. 🍽 Primary schools are also giving their Under 5's milk in disposable cartons with plastic straws. This could prove difficult to persuade change here due to practicality ie open cups and little ones =lots of spillages. Any ideas to a presentable solution on this one anyone?
So, this was super exciting , I ordered a Strawberry Superfoods Smoothie from @suncafela and it came with a STRAW MADE FROM PLANTS! And it's a COMPOSTABLE ECO-PRODUCT... So, no pesky plastic straw that will be discarded and end up hurting a sea turtle. I normally travel with my own straw (I call it my "Sea Turtle Straw"), but this time I used the one they gave me! Thank you, @ecoproductsinc! And thank you to @isfofficial / @iansomerhalder for spreading awareness of this issue.
Stewed apple pouches finished and ready for the freezer. These will come in handy in a few months when baby starts teething. The material was cut from the sleeves of an old blouse which had started to wrip. It can all go in the compost when finished with. #zerowaste#zerowastebaby#teething#apples#compostable
