BREW REVIEW: Deschutes Tips for Anniversary Beer Design
By Jon Sicotte, Brewer Magazine
Deschutes began an anniversary beer release beginning with a 18th Anniversary Pilsner in 2006. The 19th anniversary release was a Strong Golden Ale, and for the 20th anniversary the brewery put out two releases: an Anniversary Wit and Black Butte XX.
The brewery has strictly focused on the Black Butte XX base as its anniversary beer with different variations — now on its 10th release with Black Butte XXIX. The 2017 edition features Dutched cocoa, Saigon cinnamon, and cayenne with 50 percent aged in bourbon and rum barrels.
"I appreciate that our anniversary beer pays homage to Black Butte Porter, the beer that put Deschutes on the map and the reason I wanted to come work here in the first place," said Assistant Brewmaster Ben Kehs. "The base beer lends itself well to various fruit and spice additions, which gives us the opportunity to try out something new each year."
To Kehs, the Black Butte Anniversary beers are a great way for the brewery staff and consumers to look back and forward at the same time.
"It allows us to play around with new ingredients and processes, yet at its core it always has the key components that make Black Butte Porter so great," Kehs said. "It also serves as a nice contrast to the Abyss releases, where the goal is to produce the same beer every year and let the aging process produce the variation in the vintages."
This is the first Black Butte vintage to use rum barrels in addition to the usual bourbon barrel aging that this series is known for. "To me, the rum adds a touch of molasses and spice that complements the chocolate and cinnamon very well," Kehs said.
On our 8th Date of Christmas it was a Mommy and Daddy date night in for our tradition of Christmas Beer tasting. We might get through 3 tonight. This tree is kinda a hot mess right now mostly thanks to a toddler who just wont listen(notice the bare spot) and I’ve given up.
this #deschutes#ipa#beer i found today , right next to some trash from its buddys and an empty #weed#dispensary#bag . #lmao#funny stuff . #looked like whoever was drinking them got #buzzed and just wandered off. i triple checked it to make sure its all good . i cant drink anymore, but i figured the next person who asks me if i have a beer can have it.
🎄 START YOUR FRIDAY RIGHT, NEW BEERS! 🎄 -CLOWN SHOES BA PECAN PIE PORTER
this year’s version of Pecan Pie Porter might be the most impressive yet, at 10.5% ABV and aged in 100% bourbon barrels.
ADELBERT'S BLACKBERRY BARREL OF LOVE
Aged in Treaty Oak Distilling barrels with the barrel lending hints of vanilla and oak balanced with a soft whiskey bite. The ale blends with the flavors from the barrels and contributes rich notes of blackberry, figs, raisins, and molasses.
VICTORY WISDOM'S HOUR
Immediate aromas of Brettanomyces, followed by sour, lactic aromas from the kettle acidification. The lactic aromas can almost be citrus-like. Perhaps some slight hint of red berries -DESCHUTES-- THE DISSIDENT 2017 RESERVE
Fermented for more than 18 months in isolation from the rest of the beers, The Dissident is a distinctive Oud Bruin, Flanders-style brown ale, with a fruity aroma and flavor, the first wild yeast beer made by the award-winning Deschutes Brewery. -LONE PINT YELLOW ROSE IPA
SUPER FRESH Y'ALL bottled on 12/11/17
It’s the most wonderful time of the year — stout and porter season! This Black Butte XXVIII was packaged 6/13/16 (hey, my birthday!) and matured beautifully. Dense, rich, complex, peaty and smoky. And dangerously smooth. Simply phenomenal. The CBS boasted equally complex albeit different flavors hovering in the realm of sweet, hot booze with hints of maple syrup (it was aged in maple barrels) and fresh roasted coffee. Tipping my hat to @deschutesbeer and @foundersbrewing.
