There is no way to avoid the cruelty in store-bought eggs. Whether conventional or labeled “cage-free”, “free-range”, and “organic”, they all come from hatcheries where male baby chicks are ground up alive or suffocated slowly to death. All of the females get their beaks cut off to prevent pecking. All are selectively bred to produce 300 eggs per year which stresses their bodies (a natural hen’s egg production is 17 eggs per year). The egg industry is INSANELY cruel.
But what about backyard eggs? Well, those hens have to come from somewhere so most often, they come from the same hatcheries where the male babies are ground up alive. Hens also prefer to lay eggs in private and later eat their unfertilized eggs to regain the calcium lost in the process which takes a lot of metabolic work. Without this, they are at risk for osteoporosis.
Hens in factory farms suffer from osteoporosis, feather loss, ammonia burns in their lungs, pecking injuries, egg yolk peritonitis, prolapses, infections, and many die before two years. At that point, their egg production declines anyway so they are sent to slaughter where there are no laws to protect their welfare, often being electrocuted and scalded while fully conscious. Their bodies and flesh are so worn out that they are usually not suitable for human consumption and end up in cheap cat and dog food. A hen’s natural lifespan is around 8 years.

Alternatives to eggs? Tofu for scrambled eggs. Flax meal and water, apple sauce, or bananas for baking. Hummus or vegan substitutes for mayo is available in most supermarkets.

People at my gym are always talking about how much weight they have lost in a month or two months since starting a routine. I have been working hard but it always seems like I have little to no scale progress. I just have to remind myself that I am not here for a quick fix but want to get healthy and stronger.
