From our collection, this doll was made by seventeen-year-old Lea Klein, during her time as a patient at the Glen Hughes Hospital in Belsen, Germany. The doll is dressed as a Hungarian gypsy from Lea’s homeland of Hungary. Lea gifted the doll to her nurse, Vera Jackson, who was in Germany with the United National Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNNRA) from 1945 to 1946. The Second World War caused unprecedented displacement for European Jews, many of whom migrated to new countries to start life anew.⠀
