2018 is barely here and it already has me thinking of next September! Before that though let’s look back to 2017. After an amazing hunt down south in the Kootenays with Jordan & CO. I found myself embarking on another hunt up north chasing moose with my dad and his group. I don’t hunt moose often but am always up for a good time in the wilderness. I also knew of a couple honey holes for elk in the area. After a couple days moose hunting coming up empty handed and a very close call with a big 7x7 bull elk I couldn’t help myself and had to get behind the bugle again. I headed to an area I knew elk were holding in for an evening hunt. I started with some soft cow calls as I felt I was already in “the zone” only to come up empty handed. I switched to the challenge bugle and let a gnarly bugle go! I got an answer right away, the hair stood up on the back of my neck and the chase was on! It didn’t take long to close the gap with this bull as we were both eagerly waiting one another. As the bull got closer I told the Chris the shooter to get ready as we were in some thick timber and I could hear branches snapping, the bull was close. A bull shows his face 30 yards from us, unfortunately only a small 3 or 4 point, I tell the Chris to hold up that’s not our guy. I bury the bugle in my jacket to muffle it a bit and let one rip. Before I can finish the loudest most challenging bugle cuts me off! He appears 20 yards from us to the left. But spooks immediately into the thick brush. I check the wind all is good so bugle again he calls back and steps out 30 yards from us I confirm he’s legal and tell Chris to shoot! The bull expires not even 50 feet from where he was shot, a clean ethical kill! This was these guys first Elk. I can’t put into words how happy I was to experience this with them. They went through all the elements and got a taste of what elk hunting is all about. Although they had some choice words for me during the gruelling pack-out, they were thankful in the end. This is what hunting’s all about, making memories that last a lifetime and enjoying some fine table fair for the year! Not to mention what an amazing first bull Chris, that’ll be tough to top!
One of the coolest @stealthcamgsm trail cam pics I captured this last season. I don't know the guy but I would love to hear how it went down, crazy how just one single photo can tell such a cool story. Congrats on all the hard work, it paid off 🏹 And thanks for not stealing my cam 👍🏻
For a general unit bull this guy had potential. He looks young, his 3rds are so so, but his top end was good. I'm thinking I will be right back in this spot giving him a good look over next season. But... I also know a few miles deeper there are some even better bulls ;) #elk#elkhunting#sickforit#phoneskope#isitseptemberyet
