😍😍😍 #FACTS OCT. 17, 2017. The Wisconsin State Historical Society recognizes Two Rivers, Wisconsin as the birthplace of the sundae and in 1973 erected a historical marker in Two Rivers Central Memorial Park that reads:

ICE CREAM SUNDAE – In 1881, George Hallauer asked Edward C. Berner, the owner of a soda fountain at 1404 – 15th Street, to top a dish of ice cream with chocolate sauce, hitherto used only for ice cream sodas. The concoction cost a nickel and soon became very popular, but was sold only on Sundays. One day a ten year old girl insisted she have a dish of ice cream “with that stuff on top,” saying they could “pretend it was Sunday.” After that, the confection was sold every day in many flavors. It lost its Sunday only association, to be called ICE CREAM SUNDAE when a glassware salesman placed an order with his company for the long canoe-shaped dishes in which it was served, as “Sundae dishes.” FOODNINFO.COM #FOODNINFO #COOLNEWSBRO #LOL #MEMES #FUNNY #HUFFPOST #BUZZFEED #HUFFPOSTGRAM #FOODANDWINE #BONAPPETIT #CHEFSOFINSTAGRAM #EATER #FOODPORN #LMAO #NYC #LEFOODING #LOSANGELES #WISCONSIN #SUNDAE #ICECREAMSUNDAE #TWORIVERS #TRUECOOKS #HISTORY #MYFAB5 #JOKES

TODAY IS NATIONAL PASTA DAY #FACTS OCT. 17, 2017. Contrary to popular belief, Marco Polo did not discover pasta. The ancient Italians made pasta much like we do today. Although Marco Polo wrote about eating Chinese pasta at the court of Kubla Khan, he probably didn't introduce pasta to Italy. In fact, there's evidence suggesting the Etruscans made pasta as early as 400 B.C. The evidence lies in a bas-relief carving in a cave about 30 miles north of Rome. The carving depicts instruments for making pasta - a rolling-out table, pastry wheel and flour bin. And further proof that Marco Polo didn't "discover" pasta is found in the will of Ponzio Baestone, a Genoan soldier who requested "bariscella peina de macarone" - a small basket of macaroni. His will is dated 1279, 16 years before Marco Polo returned from China. Death toll in wine country fires rises to 41 #FACTS OCT. 17, 2017. The death toll climbed to 41 Monday when the driver of a water tender truck died in a rollover crash while helping to battle a series of wildfires ravaging Northern California, according to officials.

A private contract driver was delivering a tank full of water to help fight the Nuns fire when the large vehicle rolled over on Oakville Grade in Napa County about 7 a.m. Monday, killing the driver, according to Cal Fire and California Highway Patrol officials.

In the last week, the fires have scorched more than 200,000 acres, destroyed or damaged more than 5,500 homes, displaced 100,000 people and killed at least 41. “This has been the deadliest week that we’ve experienced here in California… from wildfires,” Cal Fire spokesman Daniel Berlant said Monday.

Taken separately, the Tubbs fire ranks third on the state’s list of deadliest fires, claiming at least 22 lives, and the Redwood fire, responsible for eight deaths, ranks 10th.

In Sonoma County, the 36,390-acre Tubbs fire is 70% contained; the 51,064-acre Atlas fire is 68% contained; and the 11,889-acre Pocket fire is 40% contained. More than 4,000 firefighters from across California are battling the blazes.

Napa County Fire Chief Barry Biermann described the Atlas Peak area as a "moonscape" with nothing left. Six people have been confirmed dead from the Atlas fire. “It burned everything,” he said at a community meeting Sunday. These are the world's most expensive places to buy food #FACTS OCT. 17, 2017. In some parts of the world, a single plate of food can eat up more than an entire day's earnings.

That's according to a new joint study by the United Nations' World Food Programme and credit card company Mastercard, which lays bare the real cost of feeding yourself around the world. In some countries, buying a meal can cost the local equivalent of hundreds of U.S. dollars, the research says.

In the state of New York, for example, a simple serving of food like rice over beans costs $1.20 -- an estimated 0.6% of the average daily income there. Compare that with the situation in South Sudan, where the same dish would set someone back 1½ days of income.

That's the equivalent of a New Yorker having to shell out $322. For rice and beans.

Here are the world's five most expensive places to buy a meal, based on people's average daily incomes, according to the study:

1. South Sudan: $321.70, relative to New York purchasing power (155% of South Sudan's average daily income)

2. Nigeria: $200.32, in New York terms (121% of Nigeria's average daily income)

3. Deir Ezzor, Syria: $190.11, in New York terms (115% of Syria's average daily income)

4. Malawi: $94.43, in New York terms (45% of Malawi's average daily income)

5. Democratic Republic of Congo: $82.10, in New York terms (40% of the Congo's average daily income)

Researchers said they wanted to "highlight some of the real reasons countries often end up in a vicious cycle of poverty, such as conflict and insecurity." As of March, more than 20 million people across four war-ravaged regions -- South Sudan, Yemen, Somalia and northeast Nigeria -- faced starvation and famine, according to the U.N. Scientists witness huge cosmic crash, find origins of gold #FACTS OCT. 16, 2017. It was a faint signal, but it told of one of the most violent acts in the universe, and it would soon reveal secrets of the cosmos, including how gold was created.

Astronomers around the world reacted to the signal quickly, focusing telescopes located on every continent and even in orbit to a distant spot in the sky.

What they witnessed in mid-August and revealed Monday was the long-ago collision of two neutron stars — a phenomenon California Institute of Technology's David H. Reitze called "the most spectacular fireworks in the universe." "When these things collide, all hell breaks loose," he said.

Measurements of the light and other energy emanating from the crash have helped scientists explain how planet-killing gamma ray bursts are born, how fast the universe is expanding, and where heavy elements like platinum and gold come from. "This is getting everything you wish for," said Syracuse University physics professor Duncan Brown, one of more than 4,000 scientists involved in the blitz of science that the crash kicked off. "This is our fantasy observation." The crash, called a kilonova, generated a fierce burst of gamma rays and a gravitational wave, a faint ripple in the fabric of space and time, first theorized by Albert Einstein.

The signal arrived on Earth on Aug. 17 after traveling 130 million light-years. A light-year is 5.88 trillion miles.

Scientists involved with the search for gravitational waves said this was the event they had prepared for over more than 20 years.

The findings are "of spectacular importance," said Penn State physicist Abhay Ashtekar, who wasn't part of the research. "This is really brand new." #COOLNEWSBRO #ENTERTAINMENTNINFO #VEHICLENINFO #FOODNINFO #SPACE #SCIENCE #BBC #CNN #BREAKINGNEWS #HUFFPOST #BUZZFEED #HUFFPOSTGRAM #NYC #LOSANGELES #PARIS #MOSCOW #LONDON #POLITICO #NEWYORK #PLANETS #STARWARS #STARTREK #NASA #TESLA #SPACEX #ROCKET #ALIENS #ENEWS

FAJITA #FACTS OCT. 13, 2017. The tradition of marinating and grilling this piece of meat began in the 1940s with Mexican ranch workers living in West Texas near the Mexican border. When a steer was butchered, the workers were given the least desirable parts — the head, intestines and fajitas (also known as skirt steak). Well, the fajita, of course, was a delicacy compared to the head and intestines. The workers would tenderize the meat by pounding it and marinating it in lime juice before cooking it over an open fire. Then they’d serve it with a variety of condiments rolled in a flour tortilla.

Technically, only beef has a fajita, but the term has been corrupted to mean any kind of meat or seafood wrapped in a tortilla. Its popularity, I think, lies in the fact that it’s a delectable combination of flavors and textures, and can be assembled with such ease. TODAY IS WORLD FOOD DAY #FACTS OCT. 16, 2017. World Food Day is celebrated every year on 16th October to mark the initiation of a global move towards hunger eradication. It came into existence to celebrate the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations in the year 1945. Over 150 countries across the globe, including UN Member countries, organize events to celebrate World Food Day every year. It is one of the "most celebrated days of the UN calendar," as mentioned on WFD official website.

World Food Day aims to educate people across the world about the existing menace of global hunger and that right to safe, hygienic and nutritious food is one of the basic necessities for all humans all across the globe. Food security and sustainability are other issues that revolve around the commemoration of World Food Day. This year's theme calls for a wave of investment in food security and rural development.

Talking of food security and sustainability, a lot rests on checking these concepts on the microcosmic level. Only if we keep a check on what happens in our kitchens or the local grocery store, a substantial change may begin to take shape. This World Food Day, let us join hands in the fight against global hunger by ensuring less food wastage and sustainable kitchen practices that may help reduce food wastage and enable optimum utilization of resources. This World Food Day, let us pledge to follow simple practices that will go a long way in making the planet a more sustainable place - free from hunger, wastage and toxic items. Amazon head Roy Price’s wedding called off amid harassment claim #FACTS OCT. 16, 2017. Amazon head Roy Price’s fiancée Lila Feinberg has called off the November wedding after the programming chief was suspended amid allegations of sexual harassment.

The two were set to wed on Nov. 12, but Feinberg, a playwright and TV writer, called off the nuptials, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Last week, Isa Hackett, an executive producer on Amazon’s “Man in the High Castle,” claimed that Price sexually harassed her during Comic-Con in 2015. “You will love my d--k,” Price said to her in a cab ride from dinner to a party, Hackett told the Hollywood Reporter.

Price was placed on a leave of absence late Thursday, Amazon told the Daily News.

In a twist scripted in Hollywood, Feinberg had designed her wedding dress with Marchesa designer Georgina Chapman, the wife of Harvey Weinstein.

Over the last few weeks, dozens of women have accused Weinstein of sexual harassment and assault, including Rose McGowan, who claimed that she had told Amazon about the rape. #COOLNEWSBRO #ENTERTAINMENTNINFO #FOODNINFO #VEHICLENINFO #AMAZON #ROYPRICE #LILAFEINBERG #WEINSTEIN #GOOGLE #NEWS #BREAKINGNEWS #HUFFPOST #BUZZFEED #HUFFPOSTGRAM #HOLLYWOOD #ENEWS #OPRAHMAGAZINE #APPLE #JEFFBEZOS #CNN #CNBC #BBC #DAILYMAIL #GEORGINACHAPMAN #MARCHESA #ISAHACKETT #OKMAGAZINE

#FACTS OCT. 15, 2017. Most people assume that blackening is a traditional Cajun recipe, much like #gumbo #jambalaya or #etouffee but this is actually a misconception. The blackening process was invented and perfected by Chef Paul Prudhomme, at K-Paul's in New Orleans. Though Chef Prudhomme is steeped in Louisiana tradition, he actually introduced the process less than 30 years ago. Blackening quickly caught on, however, and is now enjoyed all over the world. Redfish was the first dish to be blackened, but this versatile process has since been applied to a wide variety of foods.

If you're looking to make your own blackening seasoning at home, here's a recipe that you can start with: 2 tsp. kosher salt; 1 tsp. freshly ground black pepper; 1 ½ tsp. cayenne; 1 tbsp. paprika; ½ tsp. thyme; and ½ tsp. oregano. Mix all ingredients thoroughly, and you are ready to start seasoning. This is a relatively basic recipe so feel free to adjust the amounts of seasoning, and to add your own favorite spices. We don’t need diet avocados but they exist anyway #FACTS OCT. 15, 2017. If there is anything millennials want more than avocado toast, it’s diet avocado toast.

A company in Spain is selling “light" avocados that have 30% less fat than a regular avocado.

According to the producer, Eurobanon’s Isla Bonita, the diet fruit — remember avocado is technically a fruit — has a mild flavor and a juicier and lighter pulp, making it perfect for blended drinks, cocktails, and cold soups.

The company also claims light avocados have a slower oxidation rate, get ripe faster and are available all year round.

Many commercial avocados come from Mexico, California and Peru, but Isla Bonita says the light avocados are cultivated in very specific climates in other Latin American countries like Ecuador, Central and South America. The different climates produce different types of avocados. But the company says they won’t reveal the exact origins of the light avocado, because “revealing the exact place of cultivation would be tantamount to revealing a recipe, formula, or patent,” it says on their website.

Avocados are considered pretty healthy already. While they contain 322 calories and 30 grams of fat and should definitely be eaten in moderation, they contain vitamins like B, C, and E, and minerals like potassium and folate. Avocados are also low in sugar, high in fiber, and contain the monounsaturated “good” fat that helps lower cholesterol. Eating a regular avocado is already a perfectly healthy choice. The hosts will include regulars Padma Lakshmi, Tom Colicchio, Gail Simmons, and Graham Elliot, along with guest judges like John Besh and Wylie Dufresne.

In addition to the Bay Area’s competitors, there will be 11 other chefs from around the country, though mostly NYC, SF, and Southern California. Michelin releases its 2018 Bib Gourmand list for Chicago #FACTS OCT. 13, 2017. We’re still a few weeks out from learning which Chicago restaurants will receive #Michelinstars for 2018. But as a teaser (or appetizer?) to the main event, Michelin Guide’s #BibGourmand designations were announced today. A whopping 54 #Chicago restaurants made the list, including eight first-timers. The honor is doled out to #eateries that provide quality food for excellent value—consider it the ultimate cheap eats guide.

Newcomers include a few of our no-brainer favorite openings of the year (and a surprise or two): Giant, #HaiSous Longman & Eagle, #MangoPickle #MiTocaya #PleasantHousePub Quiote and True Food Kitchen. While we expected to see Giant, HaiSous, Mi Tocaya and Quiote on the list, Longman & Eagle’s inclusion is an unexpected knock. For the last seven years, the Logan Square brunch favorite has been honored with a single Michelin star; its inclusion here indicates its been stripped of the star status.

Smile-inducing surprises include additions like Mango Pickle, a contemporary Indian bistro in Edgewater; Pleasant House Pub, a stunning Bridgeport locale with stellar royal pies; and True Food Kitchen, the cheffy, health-driven chain with locations across the country.

Facebook now lets you order food without leaving Facebook #FACTS OCT. 13, 2017. Today Facebook is announcing that users can now order food for takeout or delivery using both the Facebook mobile app and website. But it’s not at all what you might think; Facebook hasn’t created its own answer to Seamless, which would be massive news for the #restaurant industry. This isn’t that.

Instead, the company is partnering with existing services GrubHub, #Delivery.com #DoorDash #ChowNow #Zuppler #EatStreet #Slice and #Olo and will now link out to those food ordering businesses for restaurants that support them. You head to the new “Order Food” area of Facebook under the Explore section, find the local spot you’re craving, and then hit “start order.” From there, if a restaurant supports more than one of Facebook’s ordering partners, you’ll be able to choose between them. Once you do, Facebook will bring up an in-app browser that takes you through the existing websites for Delivery.com and the others. That’s where all the ordering actually happens, so you’re not actually doing much with the Facebook app beyond finding a restaurant and tapping your preferred delivery option.

Facebook is also partnering on food ordering directly with national chains #Chipotle #FiveGuys #JackintheBox #PapaJohns #Wingstop #Panera TGI Friday's, Denny's, El Pollo Loco, and Jimmy John's. But it works the same way as with the other services; you browse to one of these nearby chain locations, pick start order, and then you’ll be sent to their existing delivery system. All Facebook is really doing here is launching an in-app browser so you can get a meal without ever leaving the app. FOODNINFO.COM #FOODNINFO #FACEBOOK #GRUBHUB #SEAMLESS #HUFFPOSTTASTE #CHEFSOFINSTGRAM #HUFFPOST #EATER #EATERDENVER #FOODPORN #FOODIE #DELICOUS #TASTY #LEFOODING #GOUTER

At least 21 dead as California wildfires spread #FACTS OCT. 11, 2017. The deadly wildfires devastating Northern California regained momentum Wednesday as winds whipped back up, pushing blazes through parched hills and vineyards and prompting more evacuations from an menacing arc of flames that has killed at least 21 people, destroyed more than 3,500 buildings and battered the region’s renowned wine-growing industry.

Fires advanced overnight toward populated areas in flame-ravaged Sonoma County, prompting officials to order a fresh round of mandatory evacuations — some of which were announced by deputies “running toward the fire, banging on doors, getting people out of their houses,” said Misti Harris, a Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman. “It’s rapidly changing, it’s moving quickly, it’s a very fluid situation,” she said.

Nearly two dozen large fires have been raging in the northern part of the state, burning roughly 170,000 acres — a collective area larger than the city of Chicago.

The official death toll from the fires has increased, from 17 to 21.

That figure is almost certain to rise: Sonoma County Sheriff Robert Giordano said that 560 people in his county remained unaccounted for as of late Wednesday morning.

The fast-moving flames have swept through densely populated neighborhoods over the past several days, causing residents to flee from homes in the middle of the night as smoke filled their rooms.

Sheep invade Lyon as French farmers protest against wolf attacks #FACTS OCT. 11, 2017. Up to 1,500 sheep farmers descended on central Lyon, southwestern France on Monday with their flocks to express despair over the number of wolf attacks in the region.

The farmers, whose sheep took over a square in central Lyon in the early afternoon, warned that the wolf, which returned to France in the early 1990s and whose numbers have officially reached 360, is threatening their pastoral way of life.

Sheep in the Aveyron region must be allowed graze freely as part of the appellation on producing roquefort, the famed salty blue cheese made from the milk of totally free range sheep.

As a result, despite the presence of only a handful of wolves there, the area's 800,000 sheep have become a "pantry for the wolf," breeder #FrançoisGiacobbi told AFP. Protection methods including powerful sheep dogs and electric fences have not worked, they claim.

Over 8,000 livestock, mostly sheep, were killed in attacks blamed on the wolf last year, mainly in southeastern France. This year the death toll has reached 4,153 animals in France, according to official government figures. There has been a major rise in the Aveyron , with attacks jumping from 16 in 2016 to 50 this year already.

Wolves are now present in 30 of France's 101 départements, and one wildlife group claims some have reached the gates of Paris. #FOODNINFO #COOLNEWSBRO #FRANCE #LYON #PARIS #SHEEP #WOLVES #CNBC #BBC #CNN #FOODNETWORK #FOODANDWINE #HERD #FRENCH #BUZZFEED #CHEFSOFINSTAGRAM #HUFFPOSTTASTE #HUFFPOSTGRAM #CHEESE #ROQUEFORT #EATERDENVER #NYCEATS #SAFOODIE #LONDON #BERLIN #CHEFSOFINSTAGRAM #LEFOODING #GOUTER

Chef-Approved Thanksgiving Shortcuts That Will Save You Time #FACTS ICT. 11, 2017. In October, we all fantasize about making perfect, magazine-spread-worthy Thanksgiving feasts. We imagine cooking that elaborate chestnut-pomegranate-kale-chorizo stuffing recipe we clipped out of the newspaper, and that cranberry sauce from scratch, and maybe even sashimi served on rice crackers as a sophisticated appetizer.

Fortunately, you don't have to feel bad about taking shortcuts during the cooking process. In fact, chefs take them, too. We chatted with some chefs from around the country about all the ways they cut corners on Thanksgiving. "The easiest and best cranberry sauce—besides canned, which is my favorite— is cranberry relish, which is so, so easy. Just combine raw cranberries, orange zest and granulated sugar in a saucepan and cook for about five minutes. It's the perfect tart counterpart to so many sweet sides." — Alexandra Shapiro of Flex Mussels (New York)

ANTHONY BOURDAIN SUPPORTS ASIA ARGENTO AFTER WEINSTEIN ACCUSATION #FACTS OCT. 10, 2017. Anthony Bourdain has come out swinging at Harvey Weinstein in the wake of another bombshell report with accusations of the Hollywood bigwig sexually harassing women, including the chef’s girlfriend, Asia Argento.

Shortly after the New Yorker published a story by Ronan Farrow, going into harrowing detail about the disgraced exec’s decades of alleged sexual harassment and abuse — including rape — #Bourdain linked to the story on Twitter, writing, “@AsiaArgento I am proud and honored to know you. You just did the hardest thing in the world.” That tweet was soon followed by another, in which he wrote, “Can we use the word ‘rapist’ now?” Bourdain also retweeted a clip Argento posted from her 1999 movie “Scarlet Diva,” which she wrote and directed, in which a powerful and sleazy film producer dressed in a robe coerces her character, Anna, into giving him a massage. “I know you’re not a masseur, but, you know, just press on the muscles a little. It’s silly, I know, but it will be fine. Don’t be afraid, I’m not the Big Bad Wolf. Just think of me as a teddy bear,” the producer character in the movie says, before forcefully telling Anna to perform oral sex on him.

The “Parts Unknown” host, 61, didn’t just show his support for his girlfriend, 42, either, also tweeting, “Can everyone who dismissed @rosemcgowan now do the right thing and go f–k themselves?” Prior to speaking up about the New Yorker story, which features quotes from Argento, Bourdain tweeted about Weinstein several times since the New York Times published its story filled with three decades of sexual harassment allegations against the producer, including calling out several Hollywood figures for their silence. Today is national Angel Food Cake day #FACTS OCT. 10, 2017. Angel Food cake is made with a large quantity of egg whites and no shortening or leavening. Angel Food cake is thought to be a takeoff of the Sponge Cake, Cornstarch Cake, Silver Cake, and/or Snow-drift Cake.

There are several theories on who originated this cake. Also called ice cream cake (a Pennsylvania Dutch wedding cake). It is felt that the abundance of cake molds in southeastern Pennsylvania, one of the major producers of cake molds, indicates that the angel food cake originated there in the early 1800s.

Some historians think that the first angel food cakes were probably baked by African-American slaves from the South because making this cake required a strong beating arm and lots of labor to whip the air into the whites. Angel food cakes are also a traditional African-American favorite for post-funeral feasting. Regranned from :entertainmentninfo - Food Network's peanut butter sandwich 'hack' is getting roasted on Facebook #FACTS OCT. 8, 2017. Food Network’s “brilliant peanut butter hack you never knew you needed” is getting a lot of comments, and not many of them are positive.

The “hack,” demonstrated by food blogger Bev Weidner, is for peanut butter “slices” and it involves smooth peanut butter, parchment paper and a freezer – and a lot of confusion.

This method, Weidner explains, prevents mess and “torn bread” from spreading the peanut butter right out of the jar.

Facebook is less convinced.

The video has received over 11,000 comments with most of them questioning the need to add steps in making a peanut butter sandwich. “Because nothing is easier than spreading peanut butter on waxed paper, rolling it flat with a rolling pin, freezing it overnight, then cutting the frozen sheets of peanut butter into bread sized squares and using them to make your honey and peanut butter sandwiches.....” a user commented.

Another said, “I cant(sic) be the only one that doesn't have an issue spreading peanut butter.” A few joked about the length freezing the peanut butter would take. “The time it took to spread it on wax paper, smooth it with a rolling pin, freeze it and then cut it with scissors, I could have made you 308 peanut butter sandwiches.” “Child-‘Mama? Can I have a peanut butter sandwich please?’
Mom-‘Sure honey, give me a few hours though. I have to FREEZE THE PEANUT BUTTER.’” Some users went a little further with their comments, adding their own food “hacks.” “Here's another one they don't tell you: if you want to spread tomato sauce on a pizza but can't without tearing the crust, you can just roll a tomato flat, freeze it, throw it in the trash, call your local pizza place, and order a pizza," one posted. #FOODNINFO #ENTERTAINMENTNINFO #COOLNEWSBRO #BEVWEIDNER #FOODANDWINE #FOODNETWORK #EATER #EATERDENVER #303EATS #EEEEEATS #FOOOOOD #HUFFPOSTTASTE #HUFFPOST #BUZZFEED #LEFOODING #GOUTER #BONAPPETIT #OMAGAZINE #ESSENCEEATS #PEANUTBUTTER #SANDWICH #FOODBLOGGER #BLOGGER #TASTY #deliciousfood #ENEWS #PEOPLEMAGAZINE #foodie #lol

HAPPY THANKSGIVING, CANADA. #FACTS OCT. 9, 2017. Canada and #America may argue over who was the first to hold a harvest festival, but both countries’ approaches to the national holiday are similar.

Some of the confusion over our version of the holiday stems from the fact that we celebrate it six weeks earlier than they do—and on their Columbus Day holiday, to boot. Most of it, however, is surely owing to the fact that Americans feel ownership over this holiday, believing it grew, organically, out of a specific historical event that took place on “American” soil. After all, the Plymouth Rock story, which frames a congenial harvest feast shared by Wampanoag peoples and the Pilgrim settlers in November 1621 as America’s first Thanksgiving, is taught early and often.

In response, on occasion, some defensive writers and apologists have countered the implication that #Canadians are imitators of the U.S. or mere holiday rip-off artists, and people have pointed to Canadian antecedents to demonstrate our authentic connection. Some cite a celebratory meal held by Martin Frobisher upon his arrival in 1578, but since that involved tinned beef and mushy peas, that feels like a stretch. More germane than this story is the meaty #celebration hosted by Samuel de Champlain in Port-Royal on Nov. 14, 1606, which saw Europeans and Indigenous peoples breaking bread together. It was organized as part of the “Order of Good Cheer” dinner party series that was invented to make sure the colonists ate and drank enough to stave off scurvy and malnutrition

It’s possible that the only reason any settlers even survived at all was owing to the help of the Mi’kmaq, who had taught them ice-fishing techniques and introduced them to a vital non-toxic berry rich in vitamin C. In return, the French colonists invited some Mi’kmaq men to the November 14 celebration, which included not just food and drink, but also musket-firing and the first #European play ever performed in North America, #MarcLescarbot’s #ThéâtredeNeptune. TODAY IS NATIONAL MOLDY CHEESE DAY #FACTS OCT. 9, 2017. Registered dietitian Katherine Zeratsky, over at the Mayo Clinic, explains which cheeses succumb to the dangerous effects of mold and which ones remain edible:

The answer depends on the type of cheese. Soft cheeses, such as #cottagecheese and #creamcheese that grow mold should be discarded. With these cheeses, the mold can send root threads throughout the cheese. In addition, harmful bacteria, such as listeria, brucella, salmonella and E. coli, can grow along with the mold. The same goes for any kind of cheese that's shredded, crumbled or sliced.

Mold generally can't penetrate far into hard and semisoft cheeses, such as Cheddar, #ColbyCheese and Swiss. So you can cut away the moldy part and eat the rest of the cheese. Cut off at least one inch around and below the moldy spot. Be sure to keep the knife out of the #mold itself so that it doesn't contaminate other parts of the cheese.
Those are the basic rules, but be sure to check out the full post over at the #MayoClinic for a handy chart that outlines specific #cheeses and their susceptibility to mold. Those are the basic rules, but be sure to check out the full post over at the #MayoClinic  for a handy chart that outlines specific #cheeses  and their susceptibility to mold. restaurant serves up boxes for your phone while you eat #FACTS OCT. 8, 2017. Disconnecting from your phone while dinning at Hearth is completely up to you.

The 13-year-old #LowerEastSide restaurant Hearth now matches its linens and glassware to old-fashioned cigar boxes adorned with "Open Me!" signs that invite guests to deposit their phones during meals. The boxes are the restaurant's #JamesBeard award-winning chef's, #MarcoCanora solution to modern technology's disruption of the #dining experience. "If there's one time in the 24 hours in your day that's a time to engage with the person you're with, it makes sense to me that it's around the dinner table," Canora told Eater. "The hope is that you sit down, you get your menus, and then you're like, 'What is this box?'" Canora said. "And then you open the box and there's this very simple note. If you want to do it you can do it, if you don't want to do it, don't. It's just a box on the table that's there if you want it." And the note reads, "We'd like to invite you to unplug during your meal here at Hearth. Feel free to use this box, put your phone away, and connect with your fellow diners." Canora said that his staff mentioned that if people didn't have their phones in-hand then they were less likely to post social media snaps of their meals, negating that source of free advertising that has become so important to restaurants. "We are all willing to sacrifice that," he said. "I feel that this is remarkable, and they'll hopefully talk about the box and talk about their food post meal." But, the chef also said that since the addition of the phone boxes, he's noticed that "six out of 10 times," people are utilizing the boxes. "I think people are digging it," he said. "We've been here for 13 years. We want people to have an experience that is calm, and this is the way to help get there." GOP Sen. Bob Corker Says Trump’s Volatility Could Spark ‘World War III’ #FACTS OCT. 8, 2027. #Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker (R) blasted #PresidentDonaldTrump in a scathing interview with The #NewYorkTimes on Sunday, saying the “vast majority” of congressional Republicans were concerned with the president’s volatile behavior and that rhetoric from the White House could set #America “on the path to World War III.” During the interview ― an unprecedented assessment of the head of the senator’s own party ― Corker said Trump concerns him and that the president’s proclivity for #Twitter tirades had “hurt” the country during times of negotiation. “I know he has hurt, in several instances, he’s hurt us as it relates to negotiations that were underway by tweeting things out,” Corker said, adding that “everyone knows” the “president tweets out things that are not true.” “Look, except for a few people, the vast majority of our caucus understands what we’re dealing with here,” Corker continued. “Of course they understand the volatility that we’re dealing with and the tremendous amount of work that it takes by people around him to keep him in the middle of the road.” Corker, a powerful and respected Republican, was an early supporter of Trump during the 2016 campaign but has since become one of his most outspoken critics in the Senate. Orthorexia: When 'healthy eating' ends up making you sick #FACTS OCT. 8, 2017. Twenty-nine-year-old Frenchwoman Sabrina Debusquat recounts how, over 18 months, she became a vegetarian, then a vegan - eschewing eggs, dairy products and even honey - before becoming a "raw foodist" who avoided all cooked foods, and ultimately decided to eat just #fruit

It was only when her deeply worried boyfriend found clumps of her hair in the bathroom sink and confronted her with the evidence that she realised that she was on a downward path.

For some specialists, the problem is a modern #eating disorder called orthorexia nervosa.

Someone suffering from orthorexia is "imprisoned by a range of rules which they impose on themselves," said Patrick Denoux, a professor in intercultural psychology at the University of Toulouse-Jean Jaures.

These very strict self-enforced laws isolate the individual from social #food gatherings and in extreme cases, can also endanger health.

Paris #nutritionist #SophieOrtega said she had one patient who was going blind due to deficiency of #vitamin #B12 which is needed to make red-blood cells. "A pure, unbending #vegan " her patient even refused to take supplements, said Ortega. "It was as if she preferred to lose her sight...rather than betray her commitment to animals." To be clear, orthorexia is not an interest in healthy eating - it's when enthusiasm becomes a pathological obsession, which leads to social isolation, psychological disturbance and even physical harm. In other words, as Bratman said in a co-authored book in 2000, it's "a disease disguised as a virtue." #AlainPerroud a #psychiatrist who has worked in #France and #Switzerland over the course of a 30-year career, says orthorexia "is much closer to a phobia" than to a food disorder.

As with other phobias, the problem may be tackled by cognitive behavioural #therapy - talking about incorrect or excessive beliefs, dealing with anxiety-provoking situations and using relaxation techniques and other methods to tackle #anxiety he suggested. Jamie Oliver's Car Has The Coolest On-The-Go Kitchen #FACTS OCT. 8, 2017. When #celebritychef Jamie Oliver got the chance to trick out an #SUV with as many kitchen tools as he could dream up, he didn't hold back. Oliver worked with Land Rover's Special Vehicle Operations team to make what is most likely the coolest car any food-lover could have, and as he put it on Good Morning Britain, "Camping will never be the same." The car has a ton of awesome features, but the coolest is probably the toaster, conveniently located between the driver and passenger seat next to the gear stick. Imagine how much better road trip Pop-Tarts would be if you could warm them up! If you're more of a #toast and #jelly kind of person, there's jam storage behind the climate controls up front, naturally.

The car is tricked out from front to back. Under the hood, there's a slow cooker and a spit roast that pulls out. The wheels can act as #icecream makers and butter churners, and an entire #kitchen counter pulls out of the trunk, complete with a sink and plenty of prep space.

In the same area, there is a pull-out knife drawer and a spice rack, not too far from the herb gardens hanging out of the rear windows.

As if that weren't enough, there's a full-on olive-oil dispenser that comes down from the trunk, because you can never have enough EVOO. Amazingly, Oliver, his wife, and their five kids can all fit in the car, even with all its bells and whistles. Food Network's peanut butter sandwich 'hack' is getting roasted on Facebook #FACTS OCT.
