Three sets (or so I believe) of prototypes would be sent over seas for promotional use. Along with a few variant fashions. As I've said before, where these prototypes wound up is unclear. I've been told a few different places but I've been unable to verify any of them. I just hope they are safe and behind glass. If you haven't noticed, the dolls are very different from the ones which were released. The actual dolls hadn't finished final production yet. Galoob just needed to send something close to what the final production run would look like. Everything except for the bodies was handmade. One set of dolls used the Home Shopping Network Vanna White doll bodies which most people refer to as standard Barbie bodies (even though they're not Barbie bodies). The other bodies used were Galoob's Anastasia. All the dolls' clothes, except for Sporty, was made from different fabric. Most of the clothes were handmade by Diane Wooldridge; the heads were hand sculpted by Bridget Halberstadt and the faces hand painted by Ana Clark. Each doll is wearing a tiny custom wig. Two women made the wings. One of them being Christine Peppa. What I suspect to be a third set is seen in this (unfortunately blurry) second photo. However, it may not actually be a third set, it could just be that they had boxed the dolls with the Anastasia bodies. Clearly the ones that were de-boxed are the ones with the "Barbie" body dolls. The third photo shows a lone boxed Posh prototype held by a Character Group PLC employee. Possibly one of those used to pitch the dolls to Simon Fuller. The last photo shows Emma wearing a pink baby doll dress. Diane said she made that but it looked more like maternity wear. So, at the last minute, it was changed to the pink lame dress that was produced in the Girl Power line. #spicegirls#spicegirlsdolls#galoob#scaryspice#gingerspice#sportyspice#poshspice#babyspice I would like to thank Malcolm Clarke for the use of his photo.
Today marks twenty years since the Spice Girl doll prototypes were rushed from the U.S. to the U.K. to make their debut. The dolls would go on to become the best selling celebrity dolls in history selling in excess of eleven million dolls. #Nowthatsgirlpower @melaniecmusic @officialmelb @therealgerihalliwell @emmaleebunton @victoriabeckham #spiceupyourlife#spicegirls#galoob#spicegirlsdollday
