🔥 What does self care mean to you? Been turning over this quote from @chaninicholas and am wont to concur. Growing pains don’t need to be big drama, and I like the idea of choosing to be willing to grow, potentially uncomfortable in the process.
To me, self care doesn’t mean building up a cozy wall of fluff between yourself and the world, so you can feel good all the time and insulate yourself from pain : instead, making sure that you have the space and internal resources to stay present and fully meet whatever arises.
Discomfort usually accompanies upgrades. Something like, the ways you had been operating break down as you complete certain lessons and shift into new energies and lessons....and letting go of the familiar is challenging because your brain feels safe when it knows exactly how the program goes. Even if the program is old and played out, and you don’t like it, your brain will fight like hell to keep things the same. .
For me, self care is creating structures / containers / space / support in my daily experience, so that things like discomfort, confusion, pain, and grief are allowed to arise, welcomed even. It’s all allowed to arise, because I have cultivated some flexibility, some resiliency, through self care practices. And because I have already tried the other thing a million times, and it finally got boring. .
Oh, and also self care can be totally boring at times! Can include new habits and choices that aren’t the most exciting, maybe don’t feel like much in the moment, but add up to massive longer term and cumulative good. If you run into this, please don’t fret or give up 💜

Abandoned lots in Brooklyn are filled with many unique things, namely graffiti, rats and drug paraphernalia. One vacant property in Gowanus, however, was thought to contain something a bit more noteworthy: the remains of 19th-century slaves and Revolutionary War soldiers. But after a firm conducted two digs at the site, archaeologists concluded that the space at Ninth Street and Third Avenue did not contain anything of historic significance. State Sen. Jessie Hamilton, however, has challenged the validity of the dig. "We demand that the authorities examine the entire site, particularly since experts have said the location of the cistern along with various documentation suggest that a gravesite is located on the property," said Hamilton. "We need to honor the contributions veterans and enslaved Africans made to Brooklyn — not build a school over their bodies. They deserve respect."
Win for the Gowanus Neighborhood Coalition for Justice!! @nycmayor said the city will #ReopenGowanusCenter ! A moment to highlight this comment on their online petition (which has nearly 1000 signatures): community access to buildings is both about making sure communities have space to make art and culture and fitness and run whatever programming makes their lives full -- and about making sure there is space for community resilience in the face of climate chaos' extreme storms. The relationships strengthened through organizing, creating and running community spaces together make resilience more possible.
