On this day in 1917, a hundred years ago, iconic jazz musician John Birks Gillespie – better known as Dizzy – was born in Cheraw, South Carolina, USA.
Instantly recognisable even to millions of non-jazz fans by his puffed-out cheeks and his trademark trumpet, Dizzy, the youngest of nine children in a musical family, began playing the piano at the age of four and took up the trombone and trumpet at the age of 12.
He died of pancreatic cancer on January 6, 1993, at the age of 75.
First review is in. "The music presented here covers a broad spectrum of moods ranging from cerebral reflection to visceral excitement, but all of it is universally engaging." All About Jazz #jazzvinyl#jazz#finland#pianotrio
