"The screen's greatest actor", "the new Lon Chaney", a favourite actor of Brando, all refer to the most intensely prepared and private actor of his generation Paul Muni (1885-1967). Emigrating with his actor parents from Ukraine to NYC and later Chicago at 12 he was already on the Yiddish stage playing an 80 year old man. Later coming to Broadway with success, Fox signed the talented actor, changed his name and starred him in "The Valiant." Not a success he was Oscar nominated. Another flop "Seven Faces" and he was back to Broadway for his biggest hit to date "Counsellor-at-Law." Hollywood recalled him for two of the best. "Scarface" as Antonio "Tony" Camonte and one of Warner's "torn from today's headlines!" stories "I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang" another Oscar nomination. Now signed by Warner's they were quick to promote this master of makeup and meticulous preparation as "the screen's greatest." "Hi, Nellie!", "The World Changes", "Dr. Socrates", "Bordertown" with Davis and "Black Fury" all hits. Allowed the rare privilege of selecting his roles he selected "The Story of Louis Pasteur." A smash, he was now an Oscar winner. Together with Rainer in "The Good Earth" both were brilliant. He topped it with another hit biopic "The Life of Emile Zola" which was perhaps even better. Oscar nominated again it won for Best Picture. Just outside the Top 10 Box-office stars in 38&39 his personal favourite was the little seen drama "We Are Not Alone" before his final biopic "Juarez" with Davis less successful but still great cinema. With that it was back to the stage for a string of tour de force successes including his Tony winning "Inherit the Wind" with occasional screen returns including "Commandos Strike at Dawn", "A Song to Remember" and Oscar nominated for his screen finale "The Last Angry Man." Muni's passion would be curtailed due to his final years of poor health. A reserved and very private man whose every decision was often made by his devoted wife, he summed up his career philosophy by saying, "I don't want to be a star. If you have to label me anything, I'm an actor - I guess. I think 'star' is what you call actors who can't act." Muni was both.

Luise Rainer on her second Oscar-winning performance, in the 1937 film The Good Earth: "I was supposed to be a Chinese woman, and I thought, 'my heavens, how can I be a Chinese woman? How can I do this?' I knew so little about China. And as I went into the set, there were many many real Chinese people that they had gathered together. And I had a pocketbook under my arm, and this book fell. And a woman bent down, a little Chinese woman. When I went down to pick it up, our heads bumped together. And then we both looked at each other, and she suddenly let out a kind of funny gargle of a laugh. And she gave me O-Lan. Suddenly there was this character, the simpleness of this little woman. And she was O-Lan."

Luise Rainer (1910-2014) wins her second Academy Award for "The Good Earth" (1937), making her the first actor/actress to win multiple Academy Awards, as well as the first to win consecutive Academy Awards. In "MGM: When the Lion Roars", Luise states that she did not believe she would win the award so she did not plan to attend. However, she heard the winners announced (back then the winners were given to the press in advance of the ceremony) and she hurriedly put on a dress and headed to the ceremony! #luiserainer #bestactress #academyaward #academyawards #thegoodearth #1937 #vintageacademyawards #vintageoscars #oscars #oldhollywood #vintagehollywood #classichollywood

Oscar month memories: 1936 - "Broadway's Greatest Showman." It was inevitable that Broadway legend Florenz Ziegfeld's life would eventually come to the screen. In fact his wife when he died actress Billie Burke sold the rights to Universal in order to offset the huge debts he left her with. Starring William Powell, the entire production was derailed at the troubled Universal and moved to MGM after a start had been made. Reunited with his Nora from "The Thin Man" Myrna Loy and new star Luise Rainer MGM pulled out all the stops. The second most expensive MGM production at $2.1M to that time, at just under a 3 hr running time it was as MGM advertised "The sensation of the century!" 7 Oscar nominations later, Best Picture, actress - Rainer with her famous telephone scene, Dance Direction - for possible the opulent musical number ever "A Pretty Girl is Like a Melody", Director, Art Director, Original Screenplay and Editing, it would win the first 3 and become the years biggest hit at $3M. A loss for Universal initially, part of the deal was having Powell's services for what became one of his best the screwball classic "My Man Godfrey" for which he won his second Best Actor nomination. Look elsewhere for the real story of Ziegfeld as you experience here a highly fictionalized excuse to enjoy one of the biggest Hollywood musicals and Oscar winner for Best Picture in 1936. #thegreatziegfeld #1936 #williampowell #myrnaloy #luiserainer #musicals #mgmmusicals #mgm #oldhollywood #classichollywood #vintage #retro #broadway #billieburke #academyawards #oscars #oscarwinner #bestpicture #lalaland #cinephilecommunity #cinephile #moviebuff #turnerclassicmovies #warnerarchive #warnerachiveinstant #amazonprime #amazonvideo #netflix #showman
Luise Rainer's short but brilliant Hollywood career was marked by firsts. She was the first actor to receive consecutive Oscars; she was the first to win two Oscars before turning 30; and she was the first actress to win an Oscar for playing a real-life person (her 1936 role as Anna Held in The Great Ziegfeld).
"Nothing worse could have happened to me," Rainer later said about her wins. "When I got two Oscars, they thought 'Oh, they can throw me into anything'. I was a machine, practically a tool in a big, big factory, and I could not do anything. And so I left. I just went away. I fled. Yes, I fled."

Luise Rainer won two consecutive Best Actress Academy Awards. One for The Great Ziegfeld (1936), and one for The Good Earth (1937). But she fequently fought with MGM boss Louis B. Mayer over film roles. She wanted more substantial parts, and he wanted to put her in less challenging, mainstream fare. "People talk about the '30s and the '40s as a great time, but it was the glamourpuss time. I was never really that. Mayer's motto was, 'Give me a good looker and I'll make her an actress,' which to me is an insult to my profession."

Happy Heavenly Birthday to actress Luise Rainer (1910-2014) 💖💖💖. What a long life she had...she died just 2 weeks shy of her 105th birthday. She lived her final years in the Eaton Square apartment that Vivien Leigh (1913-1967) once lived in...I remember seeing photographs of her there in Vanity Fair magazine around the late 1990s. If you have never seen "MGM: When the Lion Roars", it is excellent and Luise is interviewed and provides a lot of insight into her time at MGM. #luiserainer #happybirthday #happyheavenlybirthday #oldhollywood #classichollywood #vintagehollywood #academyawardwinner #classicbeauty #vintagebeauty #mgm #mgmwhenthelionroars #eatonsquare #vanityfair #vivienleighsapartment
