My poor little immune system couldn't fight off both the circulating cold bug and all the smoke from the nearby wildfires, so I'm officially ill with sinusitis. So thankful the rain arrived!This means training must be only movement oriented so my body can focus on fighting this cold instead of recovering from training, so 10x10 on the minute with the 20kg was today's work. I took this opportunity to see how my work on keeping my ribs connected to my pelvis was coming along by filming my swings from all four directions. In general, I'm pleased with the progress.

I've only done a half-body weight (24kg) TGU a handful of times, but I feel today's is the most stable to date. Coming up to the elbow is still shaky, but is progressing.

The secret to a heavy TGU isn't muscular power, but the ability to maximize your alignment to bear load and know where you are in space. This is why practicing bottoms-up and one-minute TGU's with a light bell are so valuable!

A note on the wrist band: Many disagree with the use of wrist bands, arguing if you can't do it without padding, you shouldn't. In general, I agree, but there are exceptions. Where my grip is very strong, my physiology clearly isn't one with large amounts of muscle tissue. Using a heavy bell on my tiny little forearms with no padding causes moderate contusions and the pain distracts from the movement, so I use a wrist band. Specifically, a sock. The 24kg is the only bell with which I pad the forearm.

With the prior week's movement efficiency fresh in my motor patterns, I was able to hit a new volume PR with body weight double bell swings: 5 sets of 10, double 24kg (last set shown). There is still much room for improvement with this weight, but the progress is happening.

The human body has two sides: dominant (generally, your writing side) and non dominant (the other side). Movements performed with the two sides are called bilateral and encompass many complex movements, such as deadlifts, squats, bench press, planks, etc. Movements performed on one side or switching between the two sides are called unilateral, such as pistol squats, single arm presses, and running.

The two sides are not designed to be equal, as they serve different purposes (dominant = power, non dominant = stability). That being said, it's important each side has good proficiency in each other's specialty. In bilateral movements, our dominant side likes to take over, so practicing a bilateral movement with a unilateral load is helpful in teaching that proficiency.

Today's work continues to be light and fluffy in 5/5x5 front squats with 12kg. The challenge was keeping the hips and ribs square with the asymmetrical load.

Today I worked on health stuff! Hip stability, core stability, and glute activation. I will be taking a break from heavy lifting for a little while and will be working with higher volume and improving imbalances so I can move and feel healthy!

LATERAL STEP UPS with slow eccentric (downward movement). These are important for glute activation and hip stabilization. Make sure to put most of your weight on the elevated leg and try not to push off with the leg on the ground. Squeeze your quad and glute at the top for full extension. Lower back down slowly by loading into the glute (hinging back with your hips) while keeping your hips square. Lower down controlled without plopping your foot onto the ground.

FULL BODY EXTENSION with added resistance for core and bracing. Start on your back with your legs at and arms at 90 degrees. Brace your core, push your back into the ground and extend arms and legs towards the ground. To Resist extension in your lower back and resist your ribs flaring up you must brace your abs!

HINGE at the hips and try to keep your hip bones as square as possible without rotating by keeping your abs engaged. To come back up, contract your glute first and stand up tall. Squeeze your quad and glute hard at the top  for full extension.

- I am half Chinese and half "White" (not really sure what kind but we usually just say Irish). Most people can't guess what I am right away and I've heard everything from Latina, Hawaiian, middle eastern, etc.

- I grew up playing sports like soccer and volleyball but never considered myself athletic or into fitness until college. I'm secretly competitive and hate losing!
- I love all kinds of music and sometimes I just like to drive so that I can turn the music up and get in my zone. Music is something that effects my mood drastically. I've recently gotten into EDM and i looovveee it...but the good older stuff not the new annoying stuff ๐Ÿ˜
- I'm a huge snacker or like my dad calls me I'm a "grazer". My favorite snacks include chips, candy, cereal, fruit, and sugar free popsicles (lol @aesthetic_strength)
- I don't consider myself to be "girly" and I am pretty low maintenance. Usually takes me 20-30 mins to get ready and that's mostly just because I'm a really slow person.
- I love all animals and spend a disgusting amount of my time watching instagram videos of cute dogs. I was also a vegetarian for about a year in college but that was short lived ๐Ÿ˜ณ
- I have a RBF 99.9% of the time so that along with my awkward social habits scares people away ๐Ÿ˜‚ Please give me a chance though! It takes me a while to get comfortable with people but once I do, I'm goofy and weird ๐Ÿ™ƒ

I have always called Turkish Get-Ups the Sun Salutation of kettlebells and practice them with equal mindfulness, so my yoga and strength trsining were the same movement, today. Both are a flow of relevant human movements meant to be practiced to assess one's mind-body connection, ensure each side is moving according to its ideal alignment, and create control throughout the entire flow.

Performing movement slowly illustrates the sticky spots in with our mobility or stability, allowing us to work those places until smooth. Today's work was the 1-minute get-up with 12kg, taking the full minute to really explore the movement. I find the timing difference between the two sides quite interesting!
