This movement - while it may look simple - is not! Hip extension was a severe weakness of mine. In fact, I couldn't perform this movement without pronounced use of my low back when I went for my first evaluation with @mosesbernard.  Fast forward to today. I have worked diligently on CAR's, PAIL's and RAIL's, and movements prescribed by Dr. Bernard.  While this may not look impressive, the progress, for me, is substantial! In this position, I have completely eliminated my low back from the movement. 
It does not stop here. There is continued work to be done but hell if I won't celebrate this victory! .

An incredibly useful drill to teach shoulder stability, proprioceptive vertical (what does reach up actually feel like), and the ability to move ones body freely underneath it all. With so many of us parked in our chairs and cars all day, these are ranges of movement that we don't often explore or strain in. Use it or lose, use it to keep it.

There are no PRs to be made with the arm bar, only ranges to be moved into and relaxed within. Save your strenuous efforts for the big lifts, but check in now and again with movements like these. 
A drill like this is ideally held for several breath cycles, not necessarily time. There is a cage (and within it lungs) that a shoulder moves upon, and unless you are lifting a car, you will need to breath no matter what the movement. 
Make sure you can do both sides well, don't force the range, allow it to come with time and practice.

Sound on! 🔊
You guys keep harping on tennis or golfer’s elbow! Where the pain arises on the inside or outside of the elbow. This can be called medial or lateral epicondylitis or it might be something that continues to pop up and it becomes a tendinosis or tendinopathy. This just indicates your tendinitis (acute inflammation) has become a long repetitive irritation to the tendon of either the wrist extensors or wrist flexors 🔥 
Yet, here’s the thing... elbow pain arises from a WIDE VARIETY of reasons. Unless I can understand where your pain seems to be coming from (lifestyle, stressors, diet, activity, etc) and how your surrounding joints/muscles are moving, I don’t like giving a “one-fits-all” protocol. 🤔
With that being said, we can address just the tendons surrounding the elbows and discuss those! I highly suggest checking back on videos for shoulder and wrist mobility to make sure those are “within normal range” as well. 👌
For any tendon type pain, we know that slow, progressive loading will help in recovery. Did you know that stretching is still loading the tendon?! Did you know that it doesn’t elongate a tendon and make it weak but it actually helps with early loading to add thickness and strength?! Well now you do 😉
Try these out first if you’re having some elbow pain and I’ll be dropping some other videos throughout the week for continued loading. .

There are three things you should have moving well in your body. Shoulders, hips, and spine. So many of us get so tight in our shoulders, hips, and spine to a point where our bodies don't move like they should. Constantly giving motion through our joints the better. Our joints are built to move but for some odd reason many of us ignore that and decide to stay inactive and then are surprised why everything hurts. .

Shoulder pain often stems from poor shoulder mobility. As we age, one of the first things we lose is often the ability to do things overhead.

Wall circles are a great way to combat this. Arm fully extended, back side of the hand flat against the wall, circle your arm up in front of you. At the halfway point, flip your hand to palm against the wall, and complete the circle. Focus on keeping your shoulders in line with each other, your opposite shoulder will want to compensate by moving forward. Move closer or further from the wall to make this harder or easier.

DIRECTIONS 📋:
1. Lay on your stomach with your knee and lower leg hanging off the edge of a table or bed. 
2. Make sure your knee cap is off the edge. 
3. If you feel a stretch in your hamstring, stay here for 2 minutes. 
4. To increase stretch, place opposite foot on the heel of the foot you're attempting to stretch. 
5. Perform ankle pumps for a neural gliding effect. 
6. You can also cross your unaffected leg over the leg you're trying to stretch, allowing the weight of your legs to push them into more terminal knee extension.
7. Hold for 2 minutes.

👣Supination/inversion (left image) is the locked position of the foot and its bone structure. Here the foot has its strongest stability and makes for a efficient push off phase of our gait. In supination the medial arch of the foot is lifted and the tissue above is primed for extension and lateral movements. (Talking booty activation here) 👣Pronation/eversion (middle image) is a unlocked or open position of the foot. In this position our feet can best read the ground reaction force (concrete or sand is going to activate the tissue differently) and accept the force/weight of our movements, pre-tensioning the tissue above accordingly. With pronation the medial arch is collapsed. The foot goes into pronation from heel strike all the way until the leg bone lines up with the ankles joint(s) (heel strike to ankle rocker phases) and should return to supination as the leg travels over the foot.

DO YOU SHIFT TO ONE SIDE WHEN YOU SQUAT?

The squat has a lot of moving parts that need to work in unison in order to produce an efficient, stable, and strong motion. There are quite a few common faults I see when 🔎 analyzing technique, and one of the most prevalent is a ↔ side to side shift.

An ideal loaded squat will have left to right symmetry between the motions of the ankles, knees, and hips. So if we were to drop a plumb line between the 👣 feet, it would cross straight through the midline of the body.

When you shift into one hip or the other, you lose that symmetry at all three joints. For a shift towards the LEFT hip, the resulting biomechanical asymmetries are...

🔸More hip flexion and ankle dorsiflexion on the left, which can result in a pinch in either joint.
🔸Relative adduction and internal rotation of the left and abduction/external rotation on the right, which can cause hip pain on ether side depending on the shape of your acetabulum and femoral head.
🔸Relative valgus collapse and increased flexion of the left knee, which could be a factor in knee pain on the side of the shift.

There are a number of possibilities for why this shift occurs. I like to clear mobility restrictions first, ensuring we have ⚖ even ankle dorsiflexion knee flexion/rotation, and hip flexion/abduction/rotation on both sides.

Then we move on to motor control and 🏋 technical proficiency and start grooving the motions to clear muscular imbalances.

This is one of my favorite go-to stretches with @stickmobility and allows me to effectively decompress my vertebrae of choice. Can dial it in.
Here I am wearing cloth slippers to intentionally slide my feet and low body away from the hands on the slick floor.  I would caution anyone who want to try to first test your positions and hand placement. These shoes are designed with a stiff, non-compressible sole with a distinguished raised heel (usually made of wood or a plastic composite with a rubber bottom to prevent sliding). Most weightlifting shoes will have a raised heel of approximately 2.5 cm. While these shoes are well known by weightlifters across the world, they are still generally unfamiliar to everyday gym-goers. 🤔

Weightlifting shoes are beneficial in a number of ways. The first thing you’ll notice when you put on a pair of these shoes is the ability to squat deeper while maintaining a more upright chest position. This is due to the raised heel.🙏

During the descent of the squat the knees need to eventually move forward toward the toes in certain squats. This allows the hips to descend to the greatest depth possible. The further the knees can translate forward at the bottom of the squat the more upright the chest can remain while still staying balanced. This allows for better technique in lifts such as the front squat, high bar back squat (shown here) or overhead squat.✅✅

Bottom line, you don’t have to be an Olympic weightlifter or CrossFit athlete to own a pair of weightlifting shoes. If you have any desire to squat heavy weight, these shoes are often the way to go and well worth the money. Can you lift without them or with flat sole shoes? Sure, many do. If you feel strong without shoes or with a flat sole shoe & have the ability to maintain good technique - there's nothing wrong with squatting that way!! Boxing is a sweet science that I'll probably never master. Nonetheless, I find it important for people to partake in some kind of self defense sport. Aside from that, it's a great workout that requires a lot of transverse plane movement uncommon to most traditional exercise. Huge props to the fellas and ladies out there who do this for a living.
