Triumph Over Tragedy...
One of the saddest moments in raising butterflies is realizing that not every butterfly survives the long journey from an egg laid in the wild to emergence in the habitat. Catepillars are of a delicate constitution, susceptible to disease, toxins, viruses, parasites, and preditors. Our hands must be soap and water clean even when handling milkweed. After loosing a few precious Monarchs to the parasite called OE, we happily had four beautiful butterflies emerge this week.
Ian decided to go to the cartoon world of the past and named them after some of his favorites. Rocky had been released earlier in the week, but here we have Boris, Bullwinkle, and Natasha. They emerged big and beautiful, ready to find their place in the blue skies and gardens around the house.
Boris was released first and he was anxious to feel the wind in his wings. Check how fast a butterfly takes off in the second image of him...a blur of black and orange.
Natasha came out next and from start to finish was a calm and quiet girl. She posed and sat happily on Ian's thumb. Finally, the nearest holly tree caught her attention and she flew up and sunned herself amid the emerald colored leaves.
Finally, Bullwinkle took his turn at release. He flew up quickly and took up a spot in the new birch tree, fanning his wings. He looked like a stained glass window as he posed in the sun.
Each and every healthy butterfly is another of God's miracles, and while we're saddened when a few fail to live out healthy life cycles, we're so happy when they do.
