I'm proud of myself for already making 2 visits to my home state since moving only 4 months ago! Even if baby weekend trips are way too short. I enjoyed a quick catch up session with @atasteofkoko over the prettiest meat board and prosciutto and arugula sandwiches at new adorable cafe, @lamattaaustin. To celebrate my return, I want to share a Japanese/Korean favorite, Pizza Toast! This is popular in both countries and it is really yummy. It is also super easy to make at home. In Korea, we eat fresh bread from a bakery and they cut the bread thicker than your average toast in America. You can do this with a regular Wonder Bread type toast too, but if you can get fresh thick cut bread, that would be better. Also, soft white bread (we it call milk bread) works best.
All you need to do is spread some sauce (I just used the Barilla Basilico Spaghetti Sauce) and add your toppings. But of course, I like to kick it up a notch! After I spread my sauce on the bread, I sprinkle some dried herbs, such as basil, oregano, chili flakes, and parsley. Then I add my toppings, ham, green pepper and red onion. You can add any that you like, but this is the basic combination in Japan and I think it's the best. Then top with your grated or sliced mozzerella. I sprinkle some parmesan too for added flavor. Bake in an oven at 190c° until the cheese is melted. I then turn up the heat to the highest setting to get the top golden brown.
My secret is to use a grate that lifts up the toast off the baking sheet so that the bottom also gets toasty. If you have a toaster oven, this probably came with your set. I bought mine from a Japanese cookware store and I can use it to drain my fried foods as well. If you don't have one, don't worry, you can just bake it on a cookie sheet.
Pizza Toast is best eaten with a fork and knife and best eaten right out of the oven. It is so crispy and soft, and you will fall in love with it! Kids love it too! I hope you try this at home, you will love it! Eat On!
