Why did I choose this pose? November is the month of my favorite holiday, Thanksgiving.  I love sharing comfort food with extended family at my grandmother’s farm in central Kansas.  Thanksgiving also offers a time to pause, reflect, and give thanks.  Humble Warrior is an exercise in surrender, as the forward fold is the act of bowing down in salutation and bringing the focus inward.  However, it’s still a very active posture, requiring great strength in the legs and intensely stretching the shoulders and hips, which the body craves after indulging in all that comfort food or experiencing any of the stresses that may come with the holiday. - LAURA ORTH

For November's Pose of the Month, Let's try the easiest version of headstand, Tripod Headstand. Since your hands and head are on the floor (in a triangle shape), the greater surface area helps you stay balanced. 
Headstanding can increase blood flow and nutrients to the brain, decrease symptoms of depression, improve circulation, strengthen core muscles, and increase your focus, among many other things, IF practiced correctly. There are loads of ways to take this pose to a beginner level, and the many different ways are what we will practice in class (your toes NEVER have to leave the earth). To practice at home, a wall is a great tool to ease the fear of falling. Practice CONTROL the ENTIRE way in AND out of your headstand (meaning, no wobbling- build strength and balance before your full expression). Again, in class, we will NOT be practicing the full expression (unless it is a regular part of your practice), but rather- getting comfortable in the many beginner variations of the pose.

"Limitation is a creation of the mind." Of all my favourite yoga asanas - and I have a lot of them, shirshasana (headstand) is probably my favourite. The most difficult aspect to overcome is doubt, with proper alignment the physical aspect becomes surprisingly simple. So here's some helpful tips to get you upside down this season! Start by measuring the width of your shoulders by placing your palms on the outside of your elbows, ground your elbows to the mat by pushing them forward slightly. Place the top of your head between interlocked palms ( I keep my pinky fingers straight and pressed together for added stability.) Next straighten your legs and tip toe forward as far as possible while keeping your legs straight. Once you've walked to your limit you can either straighten one leg and with a strong core bring the other leg to meet it or kick into a bent knee form and them slowly straighten the legs (as pictured) the strength in this posture comes from your core and your triceps no strain should be felt on the neck. Dolphin and low plank are great exercises to build up strength to this pose. #yoga #wellness #headstand #poseofthemonth #goforit

Forearm Wheel is a deep backbend. 
The pose can offer pretty huge benefits. The deep opening through the frontal hips, belly, chest, shoulders, and thighs is thorough, and this shape also strengthens the shoulders and spinal muscles. Plus, taking a backbend like this one can open your lungs and even entice more courage.
