Desk Stretch of the Month: Side Stretch! Just because you are at your desk doesn't mean you can't stretch it out a little. 
Each month @liv.chill will describe a desk stretch variation of our #poseofthemonth 😊

How To: 🔥sit up tall in your chair
🔥Turn your body so that you aren't facing your desk 🔥 Inhale reach your hands above your shoulders
🔥 Exhale place your arm thay is closest to the desk on the chair or desk
🔥 Inhale to lengthen your back
🔥Exhale reach up and over as you lean toward your desk

Remember to: keep your shoulders down, draw your belly button in to engage your  abdominal muscles, and focus your attention on the side being stretched. 
Benefits: Stretches side body (especially intercostal muscles between ribs), eases breathing, stimulates digestion.

Your hips, hamstrings and groin will be stretched, which in turn will increase overall flexibility.

Triangle pose is one of my favourite foundational poses from the Ashtanga Primary Series and here's my top tips to experience the ultimate stretch, tone the legs (and relieve stress)!
↪Stability really does come from your feet in this pose, heel to heel alignment with front foot facing forward and back foot 45 degrees. Push through all 4 corners of both feet and keep both legs straight.
. ↪ Both sides of waist to stay long encouraging stacking of shoulders and think weight extending upwards (rather than downwards) .
↪ Both hips should be externally rotating which will help to broaden the shoulders and spiral the chest upwards to encourage opening and lengthening of the torso.

There is a lot going on in this powerful standing, deep twist. Throughout January we will be progressively working toward this pose. Our poses of the week are a layered investigation of what is required from both the mind and body in order to be mentally present and physically strong in this pose. Our weekly layers will bring our awareness to different areas of the body that need to be warm, open, and strong as we build to our peak pose of the month. I learned a lot thru teaching this pose this month tho -like that block between my feet helps keep toes in & heels out (a common misalignment) and 2 blocks on an angle against the baseboards helps if wrist issues are a problem or even for a good warm-up 😘
