Nearly three years ago, my best friend and I were grabbing sushi when I told her that I had something really important to say. Apparently I built it up so much that she thought I was going to tell her I loved her - which I do but not like that. I was so nervous that I just couldn't say it out loud; instead, I wrote my message out on my cellphone.
I told her I was gay.
She was the first person I ever came out to.
That was three years ago. And a year and a half later, the night after #PrideTO 2016 is when I came out publicly on Facebook. And it's because I had someone safe that I trusted immensely to give me the courage to even come out at all. It's because of @Kat_LeBlanc that I felt safe enough to confide in her, and safe enough to be myself.
#NationalComingOutDay recognizes the immense courage of #queer and trans folks in coming to terms with their identities, and the struggles of many who still don't have the support systems in place to do what I was privileged and safe enough to do. Coming out is not something you just do once; it's something you do over and over again, with new people you meet, or in public when you're holding hands with your significant other. It's something I still need to do with many others. "I'm #gay " has become much easier to say, but still takes me a minute to build up the courage to do it.
On National Coming Out Day I think of fellow queer and trans Asians and PoC who have taken that courageous step of coming out, or are still finding the safe space for it. They are those who will face unique challenges, not just in acceptance, but also in finding space in the #LGBTQ community. I think of them on a special day like this.
Because of Kathryn, I no longer need to come out via my cellphone. I can now just say it.
Happy National Coming Out Day friends 💜💛💚❤💙💖💝
