Dad visited me this evening. I managed to eat a bit of chicken and beef. I was pleased to see him but he’s definitely in bad books for leaving me here. I have blood tests tomorrow morning. IF my creatine levels have dropped we can discuss maybe organising me a renal diet and give me a glimmer of hope! So fingers crossed for tomorrow. Love you all my fuuriends 😍

AN URGENT PLEA TO SAVE A LIFE❗❗❗ Good day everyone.
We are making this post to appeal to your good graces in our bid to save the life of our dear brother, friend and colleague, Odutemowo Olufemi Adeniyi who has been diagnosed with End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD); a disease in which the kidneys have failed in their functions and need replacement (transplant). He therefore needs urgent RENAL TRANSPLANT to keep him alive to raise his 2 year old son. He is 36 year old and married.
The cost of the Renal transplant is N10,000,000. It is a huge mountain, but one that can be surmounted in no time with the force of our collective kindness.
To this end, we are appealing for your kind assistance. Please assist us with whatever you can afford at this moment.
Help us snatch Olufemi from the jaws of death. Let lack of fund not be the reason we will lose him.
Your donations can be paid directly into his account below:

they say children teach us the prospect of immortality, and our pets teach us about mortality...don't like this lesson. I miss this soul everyday. Kidney Stones, Even Asymptomatic, Heighten Renal Risk⠀
⠀
Risk for end-stage renal disease and all-cause mortality can be elevated in people who develop certain stones, according to a longitudinal cohort study presented at #kidneywk in New Orleans.⠀
⠀
"Recurrent stone formers are at much higher risk for end-stage renal disease than control subjects, whereas incident (first time) symptomatic stone formers are not," Tsering Dhondup, MD, a resident at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, told Medscape News.⠀
⠀
Surprisingly, asymptomatic stone formers are also at higher risk for renal disease, even after adjustment for things like chronic kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, gout, and obesity — all of which can increase the risk for kidney failure and end-stage renal disease.⠀
⠀
As part of the Rochester Epidemiology Project, Dr Dhondup and his colleagues compared 7008 people who developed stones with about 28,000 control subjects in Olmsted County from 1984 to 2012.⠀
⠀
The relative risk for renal disease and all-cause mortality was higher in people with certain types of stones than in age- and sex-matched control subjects.⠀

There’s a must read article in the Washington Post that sheds light on just how messed up our healthcare system is, especially for kidney patients. Essentially, Medicare is squandering millions of dollars every year by NOT covering immunosuppressants for the life of a kidney transplant. Transplant patients lose the immunosuppressant coverage 36 months after transplant, leaving many patients unable to afford the medications, which in turn leads to a rejection of the transplant and puts the patient back on dialysis, which Medicare will pay for again. The United States is the only wealthy nation that does not cover immunosuppressants for the life of a transplant, yet our healthcare costs are the highest. Patients lives shouldn’t be held hostage because of a lack of bipartisanship in our government! If you agree, contact your elected officials and urge them to support “the immunosuppression bill!” @washingtonpost #healthcarereform

Do you know that 1 slice of 🍌 bread contains about 196 calories 🤭😲. Some even have added 🥜 and fruits 🍉🍎 to it ... babanla calories overload🙆‍♀ 😂😂😩. .
.

Let’s do a quick comparison among different breads should we ? .
Banana bread🍌 (per slice): 196kcal, carbs 32.7g( sugar18g, fiber 0.7g), fat 6.3g, protein 2.58g.
.
Wheat bread🍞(per slice): 69kcal,carbs 12.91(sugars 1.56g,fiber 1.9g), fat 1.8g, protein 2.7g.
.
White bread 🍞 (per slice ): 67kcal,carbs 12.2(sugars1.08g,fiber 0.6), fat 1.8, protein 1.91g.
.
.
This is a quick breakdown of the calorie content of each products . .
.
So are banana breads bad ? No please they are tasty 😋 I love them 😍 ( in moderation) I made them last week but I would actually consider them a cake than a bread ( to me they are more of former). But portion control must be observed when consuming .. a slice or 2 is just fine per serving . .
.
Why exactly am I talking about this 😉? I have noticed that a lot of people have been propagating it as an healthier version to bread 🥖... but this is quite untrue .Just because it contains fruits doesn’t mean it’s healthier...
.
.
So have you been Consuming 🍌 bread in large quantities with the thought that you have been eating healthy ? 😥😓😓. Haaa sorry to bust your bubbles you are kinda on the wrong track ... .
.
if you are trying to lose weight 🤸🏼‍♂you can swap the banana bread for a whole wheat 🌾 bread or bake yours without the sugar ( 🍌 is sweet enough ) . .
.

Why patients do not want to take dialysis in nowadays?
Dialysis is the most effective treatment for patients with kidney failure. It can help patients alleviate symptoms in a short time.
Rapid effect is bound to bring some side effects. There is no doubt that dialysis will cause so many side effects on patients and will make the kidney damage more and more serious. Due to that reason, some patients want to find some other treatment which is more safe and no side effects for kidney failure patients to avoid dialysis. #beijingTongshantangHospital #kidneytreatment #chinesemedicine #renomeddialysis #renaldisease #renal #kidneys #kidney #dialysisnurse #dialysistech #dialysis #dialysislife #kwazulunataldialysis #kwazulunatal #durban #southafrica #southafricandialysis #2017

Yesterday was not the greatest day for me overall. I’ve been waking up for the past few mornings EXHAUSTED to say the least. It takes all the energy I have to open my eyes. After being awake for 10 minutes or so, I start to wake up a little bit, but overall still feel pretty blah. One of the techs checked my hemoglobin yesterday and it was fine, so her first instinct is it isn’t kidney or dialysis related (I doubt that). She told me she’d mention it to my doctor but most likely I’d have to go my primary care because “it’s hard to get stuff like this billed to insurance if we can’t prove it’s dialysis related.” I’m not sure why she felt the need to say that because quite frankly I have good insurance and I personally don’t feel great/don’t care how things need to get billed. I felt awful after dialysis- headache, nausea, extreme fatigue... It’s the second time I’ve gone in tired and left tired, which they don’t think is normal. I wonder if it has to do with the fact that my treatments have been every 2 days this week instead of every other. Really looking forward to getting back on track on Tuesday. #sunnies4dialysis

In Memory of Edward James Weeks 1852-1910

Poison and an Imaginary Heiress.

Edward was born into a family of poor farm labourers at High Littleton, Somerset in 1852. In 1889 he was hospitalised after an accident but was sent away as his behaviour upset the other patients on the ward. Three months later the doctor was called to his home. Edward had become restless and unmanageable; he imagined “that snakes had taken abode in his entrails” and that he had been poisoned. He talked about hoping to marry an heiress but had been sent away, only to find on his return that the wealthy lady had married in his absence. Talk of this made him tearful and distressed and would occupy his mind for the rest of his life.

After spending some years at an #Asylum in #Exeter, Edward was transferred to the #Wells Asylum in July 1897. He still complained of having poison in him but was happy to work washing potatoes as long as he wasn’t interfered with. If crossed, he became tearful and incoherent, occasionally lashing out the other patients in the work party.
Edward still seemed to live in hope that his heiress would arrive to marry him. Still complaining of the poison inside him, by the autumn of 1910 he was observed to be “wandering about with sunken head, looking very miserable”. At the beginning of November he became very ill and was put to bed in the hospital ward, where he died on the 7th November, aged 58. A post mortem examination revealed that he had died of Chronic Renal Disease.
Edward James Weeks was buried in unmarked grave 19, Section F, Mendip Hospital Cemetery, on the 11th November 1910.

Details on how to find Mendip Hospital Cemetery are on there Facebook page and there website.

It is always important to measure potassium levels on a regular basis. Maintaining a constant level is good for kidney health💪💪 #Repost @bjkidneydiseasehospital (@get_repost)

Potassium is an essential electrolyte, which is a mineral your body needs to function correctly. Potassium is especially important for your nerves and muscles, including your heart.
While potassium is important to your health, getting too much of the nutrient can be just as bad as, or worse than, not getting enough. Normally, your kidneys keep a healthy balance of potassium by flushing excess potassium out of your body. But for many reasons, the level of potassium in your blood can get too high. This is called hyperkalemia, or high potassium.
a normal range of potassium is between 3.6 and 5.2 millimoles per liter (mmol/L) of blood. A potassium level higher than 5.5 mmol/L is critically high, and a potassium level over 6 mmol/L can be life-threatening. Small variations in ranges may be possible depending on the laboratory.
if you have a high potassium level with kidney failure , you need to limit the foods high in potassium
The symptoms of high potassium depend on the level of the mineral in your blood. You may not have any symptoms at all. But if your potassium levels are high enough to cause symptoms, you may have:
- tiedness or weakness
- a feeling of numbness or tingling
- nausea or vomiting
- trouble breathing
- chest pain
- palpitations or irregular heartbeats
In extreme cases, high potassium can cause paralysis or heart failure. If left untreated, high potassium levels can cause your heart to stop. #beijingTongshantangHospital #kidneytreatment #chinesemedicine #renaldisease #renomeddialysis #renal #kidneytransplant #kidneyhealth #kidney #kidneys #dialysisnurse #dialysistech #dialysis #dialysislife #kwazulunatal #southafrica #durban #2017

Dialysis today. I’m feeling more tired 😴 than usual today too, so I’m looking forward to going home after and relaxing! I have been battling the head nurse here about taking the stitches out that are around my catheter for the past few days. The clinic that inserted it advised me to remind my dialysis center that the stitches can be removed after 30 days. I called them yesterday to confirm it again too. I told the tech about it when she was changing my dressing and she told the head nurse. We waited for the nurse to come over but she never did and instead snapped “it’s not going to happen today.” I told her that the clinic said they just have to snip them and pull them out. So that’s cool. I’m not letting it bother me though. Does anyone else have issues with the staff at their centers? What have your experiences been like? #sunnies4dialysis

Star Fruit: A Hiccup in the Management of Kidney Disease #Facts NOV. 22, 2017. Patients with #kidneydisease must often follow a basic “renal” diet, which consists of controlled fluid intake, high protein, and low sodium, potassium, and phosphorus. This requires patients to limit or avoid numerous #foods rich in these minerals, such as canned soups, bananas, and dairy, most of which are familiar to clinicians and simple to address during a visit.
One food that isn’t common but rising in popularity, is #starfruit The National Kidney Foundation’s (NKF) Dietary Guidelines for Adults Starting on Hemodialysis instructs patients to always avoid star fruit, many #clinicians are unaware of the effects.. Star fruit, or #carambola is the five-ridged #fruit of the Averrhoa carambola tree of the Oxalidaceae family. Although the fruit and its #juice are widely available throughout the world, the plant is native to and largely consumed in the tropical countries of #Latin #America and Southeast Asia. The fruit is a source of #fiber #potassium and #antioxidants such as #vitamin C.2 Among its traditional medicinal uses are its roles in fever, skin inflammations, and as a diuretic. In patients with kidney disease, however, consumption can be #toxic and potentially fatal.
#Hiccups are a common and often harmless myoclonus of the diaphragm. However, in patients with #renaldisease and recent star fruit ingestion, this spasm can be a sign of toxicity and occurs in up to 94% of patients who present with intoxication. #Toxicity can also result in vomiting, weakness, confusion, convulsions, and death.2,4
Star fruit contains two molecules that are responsible for kidney damage and neurotoxicity: oxalate and the recently discovered caramboxin.
Oxalic acid’s effects on kidneys are well-known and well defined, partly due to its culpability in ethylene glycol toxicity and death. #Oxalate crystallizes and forms obstructive deposits that cause direct tissue damage in the form of both apoptosis and acute tubular necrosis.5-7 Neurotoxic effects are due to the more elusive compound of interest, #caramboxin #FOODNINFO #NINFONETWORK #VEHICLENINFO #FOODNETWORK #FOODANDWINE #EATER #NY #LA

Meanwhile over at my podcast and YouTube (link in my bio to podcasts and if you scroll all the way down to my YouTube) I’m able to go deeper into those thoughts and get into details of execution.

Only 1 hour and 40 minutes left! Did anyone else’s dialysis schedule change this week? Also- let’s keep our sunny movement going! Share your #sunnies4dialysis selfies from your treatments this week!

As a dialysis patient, these are the medications I take every day! I’ve been on dialysis since September of this year. I have two pills for blood pressure, one for cholesterol, a diuretic and 3 calcium supplements (my phosphate binder). I’ve always been bad about remembering to take my meds, so I have been taking all of these minus one binder in the morning and have been taking the last binder before bed at night. Binders are generally supposed to be taken with each meal because the calcium binds best to the phosphorous that way, but because my numbers are still within a good range, my dietician is ok with the way I’ve been taking my binders. What meds are you taking? @getloudforkidneys #awarenesscreateschange #myhandsarewrinklybecauseimanoldsoulright

I FINALLY had the motivation to make a new blog post. Today’s topic 👉🏻 SKIN. My once pretty awesome skin looks less than stellar from my disease. Dryness, hyper-pigmentation, blemishes, breakouts, dark circles, and overall grayness are many of the things that kidney patients experience. I desperately wanted to use a filter to blur out my imperfections, but I’m trying my hardest to embrace them instead.
Check out my blog post and let me know what you think! What kind of changes have you noticed in your skin from your disease?
