Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, or simply Rogue One, is a 2016 American epic space opera film directed by Gareth Edwards. Rogue One follows a group of rebels on a mission to steal the plans for the Death Star, the Galactic Empire's superweapon.
I love the cast for this film, especially Felicity Jones and Donnie Yen. The performances are great and fun, and the character chemistry feels dynamic. It’s a highly entertaining film, with lots of great action sequences and many fun moments. When it comes to the battle, Gareth Edwards really manages to make everything feels massive and epic. The story feels really different and fresh compared to the rest of Star Wars instalments, which is a very clever thing to do. Visually it’s a stunning movie, with some of the most impressive looking landscape from different planets. There is lots of comedy incorporated into the dialogues, and they work wonder mostly thanks to Alan Tudyk’s droid character, K-2SO. Also, any scene involving Donnie Yen or Darth Vader is absolute top-notch.
The characterization feels uneven, with a lot of the Rogue One members getting less attention. For example, Diego Luna’s character is supposed to be the male lead character, yet he has done nothing worth mentioning and his character personality is honestly quite boring. The main villain is just there, he’s not bad but not so interesting either. The tone can also sometimes get inconsistent.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is a unique and interesting take on a Star Wars movie, with spectacular visuals, refreshing story, and great a cast with equally great performances.
Star Wars makes everything better.
