Maggie Lena Walker Transition on This Day (July 15, 1864 – December 15, 1934) Jacksonward Blackwall Street aka Harlem Of The South
" Why should African Americans "feed the lion of prejudice?" By patronizing black owned banks, money was kept within the black community, allowing Richmond's black community to prosper " - Maggie Walker
Walker Was a Business Woman, Activist, entrepreneur and civic leader who broke traditional gender and discriminatory laws by becoming the first woman—white or black—to establish and become president of a bank in the United States—the Saint Luke Penny Savings Bank in Richmond. Although she inherited the order deep in deficit, over the twenty-five years of her leadership it collected nearly $3.5 million, claimed 100,000 members in twenty-four states, and built up almost $100,000 in reserve.
In 1899, Maggie Lena Walker became Grand Secretary for the Order of St. Luke, an organization dedicated to the social and financial advancement of African Americans. It was a position she held until her death in 1934. Walker seized control during a troubling time for the organization — they were facing a financial crisis. In 1902, Walker founded the St. Luke Herald to carry news of the Order of St. Luke to local chapters and to help with its educational work. The following year, she opened the St. Luke Penny Savings Bank, becoming the first woman to charter and form a bank in the United States. In 1905, she opened the St. Luke Emporium, a department store that offered African American women opportunities for work and gave the black community access to cheaper goods. Maggie Lena Walker died on December 15, 1934, of diabetic gangrene. During its long history, between 1903 to 1929, the St. Luke Penny Savings Bank would have a direct impact on the black community in Richmond. #MaggieLWalker#jacksonwarddistrict#blackwallstreet#RVA#blackbanks#blackwomen#africanwomen#NewYork#NewJersey#Delaware#Detroit#Milwaukee#Baltimore#WashingtonDC#Virginia#Atlanta#Charlotte#SouthCarolina#NewOrleans#Tennessee#RichmondVA#HarlemofTheSouth#newafrikan77wordpress#hakikwelishakur

The first few steps into the Atlantic Ocean. Even during my trips to Lake Michigan I never step foot into the water. Nothing like that tush of energy the sea brings when the waves rush against you as it races as far as it can reach over the sands. Bigger the wave the more energized I felt. Hard for me to explain why I did feel this way. If I didn’t have electronics on me I might have walked further in. Really should have gotten some swim trunks for this trip. Something I really should do next time I am there or on any other ocean beach. I think this is one of the things I miss most about this trip. That feel of being so energized among the ocean waves. But there is always later this year for that. For now I am saving up for the Colorado trip. Will need every penny. 🌊🚙☯️
