Journée ville morte à #Tombouctou #CCAS_T #TimbuktuMyLove
At the moment Im travelling in Senegal. Im now in the most northern point of the country looking at Mauretania which is just across the Senegal river. This place reminds me a lot of my beloved Mali, so here is a picture of the Niger rivercrossing near Timbuktu.
Ps, pictures of Senegal will follow after my return home!

It’s a #foreedgefriday #booksellersbreakfast today and because I will be celebrating Friday night with my brother and daughter this evening I thought I would pick something appropriate. This set of the Pentateuch and Sabbath Service was published in 1867 but sadly is missing volume IV so we are selling it for £40 in total. Each volume is complete but a little worn. I was lucky enough to visit Timbuktu ten years ago for a twining trip during which we were shown around some of the famous ancient libraries. The minute I saw some large Koranic texts I knew what they were, though I know almost no Arabic, for they looked just like the Talmud. They were set out with the central original text block and then the commentary around that and then the commentary on the commentary around that too. The ancient scholars in Timbuktu and of course North Africa and the Middle-East realised what a multi-layered experience religion should be. There are many in all our religions that want to reduce that experience. Timbuktu has always been a centre for Islamic studies and there are texts from this area that are over four hundred years old and, incredibly, discuss the rights of women and the rights of the small local Jewish population. I cannot tell you how my eyes were opened by my visit to Mali. It is a tragedy that Timbuktu is, at the moment, in a challenging and delicate situation as in the past it has been such an extraordinary example of education, peace and tolerance.
I hope that area will find peace soon and that we can have the experience of visiting that wonderful city again.

"This look always breaks my heart: “The worried mom look”. Fela Kuti often sang about the African being culturally programmed to smile even when they are suffering.
In fact, we have a proverb that says “when the goat is sweating, nobody sees it”. The Pediatric Unit (URENI) of Goundam Referral Hospital handles a lot of cases, often critical… and even though the mothers try to be strong, they forget you are there after a while, and they allow their emotions to show on their faces.

I hope that by sharing these stories with you this week, we can collectively help change the rhetoric and restore smiles on the faces of the mothers and babies of Goundam.

Have a splendid weekend." #insideALIMA #ALIMA #Mali #Goundam #Tombouctou #Timbuktu #pediatric #ureni #Africa #everydayAfrica #health #doctors @alima.ngo www.alima.ngo

REFUGEES IN THEIR OWN COUNTRY: "ALIMA/AMCP is an oasis in an unforgiving desert.
One morning, my host said, “Today, we will not work in the hospital. We’ll go to see our other projects and some of the people enjoying them”. As we approached what looked like mounds of earth, they turned out to be homes where Mali’s citizens who’ve been displaced by the conflict have found refuge.
In spite of their dark circumstances, this was the first place I heard some laughter and a lot of chatter, as families filled their gallons with water.

Not everybody who lives in a tent in Goundam is a refugee though. I thought I knew what poverty was until I visited some homes in Goundam. I met a family where an unemployed man has 2 wives and 16 children. They were so poor, they didn’t even own the few goats and sheep they took care of.
It’s always great to postulate possible solutions on social media, but supporting organisations that are actually working on the ground, solving problems, saving lives, is a major step in the right direction. ALIMA/AMCP’s water stations are the only sources of water for Goundam’s Internally Displaced People.
Even without war, water can be hard to find on a desert." #insideALIMA #ALIMA #Mali #Goundam #IDP #refugees #Timbuktu #Tombouctou #Africa #everydayAfrica #health #doctors @alima.ngo www.alima.ngo

Today I met somebody who made me realise how lucky I am to have visited Timbuktu before it was severely damaged due to conflict in the region. This city, which flourished as a trade, academic and cultural centre, is key to understanding African history, Islam in the continent, and early globalisation. 🌍 |

WHEN MOTHERHOOD COMES TOO EARLY:
.
"Oyalut (12 days old) lies quietly by her 17 year old mother Zeinab. The baby was born with an infected navel which went undetected till after birth because her mom could not attend antenatal when she was pregnant. The roads are not safe, even for pregnant women. Oyalut is her second child. Zeinab first became a mother at 15 years.
.
Amintu (16 years) became a mother 3 days ago through a Caesarian operation. The surgical team who rushed to her rescue live 3 minutes away from the hospital but with their car now stolen from them at gunpoint, I wonder how quickly they can rush to the rescue of the next woman in labour with a breech baby? .
Hawa is 28 years and just had her 4th baby but she’s going to spend a bit more time in the hospital because there were complications with this birth. Fortunately for her, she has some of the best doctors in Mali, risking their lives everyday to ensure the best outcome possible for both mother and child.
.
Considering that quite a number of these mothers are children themselves, the medical team face a bigger challenge than just delivering babies safely. They also have to meander the complicated path of explaining why child marriage must be discouraged and family planning encouraged, in a tense religious environment without provoking a backlash.

WHEN MOTHERHOOD COMES TOO EARLY: . They also have to meander the complicated path of explaining why child marriage must be discouraged and family planning encouraged, in a tense religious environment without provoking a backlash. . Thank you to all those who’ve asked about how they can help. I have posted a link in my bio. ALIMA/AMCP is worth every dollar you can give them." . #insideALIMA  #ALIMA  #maternalhealth  #maternity  #childmarriage  #Mali  #Goundam  #Tombouctou  #Africa  #everydayAfrica  #health  #doctors  @alima.ngo www.alima.ngo . Oumar’s Story:
"Oumar was brought in unconscious from Septic Shock. His system basically was shutting down; and ALIMA’s doctors had to have an emergency surgery to save his 17 year old life. He’d had a tiny sore on his leg, that got out of hand, and now over 90% of the skin on his right leg, right from where his thigh hits his torso to his sole is dead, and had to be surgically removed.
.
Even though the lights went out during the surgery and we had to switch on the torch of our phones so Dr. Ongoiba could continue working, Oumar survived, thanks to ALIMA/AMCP." .

Djoro’s Story:
"In Northern Mali now, the risk of getting attacked on the road from your village to the nearest hospital is so high that most families only take the risk of transporting their sick, when it is quite obvious they would lose their loved one if they don’t rush them to the hospital immediately. Apart from the 8 different rebel groups fighting for control, there are countless bandits roaming around, robbing travelers and raping women and girls, sometimes as young as five, on buses.
.
9 year old Djoro was rushed into the Goundam Referral Hospital with a 5cm long perforation in his intestine due to Typhoid. This simply means anything he ate or drank pretty much leaked into his body. Fortunately, Djoro gets to live, thanks to ALIMA/AMCP’s medical team, who work round the clock, daily risking their lives to save lives in Goundam and Diré."

"It took me a couple of days to figure out he was the surgeon on the team. Ongoiba is a quiet but energetic and cheerful man. He loves football. He loves to cook for his wife and four kids, who at the moment, cannot be with him in Goundam because it is too dangerous.

I watched him in the theatre trying to save a patient’s leg, even though it is heavily septic and 90% of his skin is dead. He told me, these cases are normal. It is risky leaving their villages and traveling to Goundam for help. There are too many bandits and rebels on the road. People are robbed everyday. Women and girls get raped on buses. So it only becomes worth the risk, when it is obvious the patient will die if the family don’t rush them to the hospital." #insideALIMA #ALIMA #Mali #Goundam #Tombouctou #Africa #everydayAfrica #health #doctors
