#SandwichReviews is getting local. Next up, the smoked golden turkey salad from the place at the end of my street ($6.95)
When exploring a city like New York, I thought it would be remiss of me not to try my closest sandwich establishment. In hindsight, I may have made the wrong choice.
Faced with plenty of options, I opted for the deli menu and the turkey salad. As with most establishments in the US, it was endlessly customisable with salad, bread, and condiments - but I went for as it appeared on the board.
The bread was fresh and chewy, but there wasn't much substance to it. It moulded to the amount of filling well however, and didn't slip and slide out of place.
The turkey was tasty - a delicious smoked flavour instead of the more usual bland deli turkey really caught this sandwich fan off guard.
Here's where it all falls down. The mustard was far too sharp and didn't add enough flavour - perhaps an American mustard would be better suited to a sandwich like this, or a mayonnaise instead.
The salad was tasteless, with the tomatoes adding far too much moisture to the sandwich. The iceberg lettuce added some crunch, but little else.
The cheese was bland and plastic, giving an artificial layer to the whole thing.
Coming in at more expensive than Zabar's lox & cream cheese bagel - or their turkey salad for that matter - I won't be making a repeat purchase.
