The Liverpool armband - and why it should mean something more than longevity.
Captaining the Reds should be about a lot more than length of service. "It's been the greatest ambition of my life to caption Liverpool and now it's come true." The words of Phil Thompson in April 1979 when he succeeded Emlyn Hughes to lead his hometown club.
We found ourselves back at Swansea, Emre Can the latest to be handed the armband in Jurgen Klopp captaincy merry-go-round.
Klopp has been typically pragmatic in the absence of Jordan Henderson through injury, and with vice-captain James Milner not guaranteed a starting place. The captaincy goes to the longest serving player, whatever their individual qualities. The fact that Can only arrived at Liverpool in July 2014 tells you something about the turnover in players in the last three and a half years.
Look at those who've stood in for Henderson in the last few months.
Mignolet - a goalkeeper Klopp has pretty much indicated is not good enough for Liverpool by handing the No.1 shirt to Karius.
Coutinho - a player who had handed in a transfer request in the summer and wanting to get his "dream move" to Barcelona.
Lovren - a player whose starting place will surely be under threat from Virgil van Dijk.
Can - A player whose contract runs out in the summer.
Some have suggested the selection of first Coutinho and later Can were an attempt by the manager to show they have major roles at the club, perhaps enticing them to stay at Anfield.
But even Klopp wasn't buying that. "Maybe I could be smarter and think 'If I give him the armband, he will never leave '. Bit that is not how it works" He said of Coutinho.
Some will argue that it doesn't matter, it most of what we know about successful football teams suggest it often does.
And the Liverpool armband should mean something, shouldn't it?
When Gerrard Houllier decided to past it from Sami Hyypia to Steven Gerrard back in 2003, he didnt just look at who made their debut first. He recognised he had the complete package, his best player, someone who would lead from the front and with the club in his bones.
[BolaNet]
