Juni is really enjoying the newest book in her collection, thanks to my friend Rachel! This Baby Loves series of board books is perfect for little ones learning new words. We read it only a few times yesterday and today Juni flipped through it and said “rocket!” That’s a new one 🚀! .
The complex topic of aerospace engineering is explained through a little bird flying, an airplane flying, and the little bird wanting to travel to outer space.  Juni loves saying “Bye bird!” whenever we get to the page with the bird in the rocket. The illustrations are bold and inviting, too!

I am excited to say, I finally heard back from The University of Maryland. I know I announced TU earlier, but UMD finally accepted my application. I have been accepted into their Aerospace Engineering program. This program is a top 10 program in the country. No words describe the excitement coursing through my veins. I have worked so hard for this and I’m not done. First my BS, then my Master’s, finishing with a PhD..... and hopefully NASA!

Back in January, 1941…

The first prototype of the Avro Lancaster flew and by May 1941 a second prototype was flown, equipped with more powerful Merlin XX engines. By September 1941 the Lancaster was delivered to 44 Squadron for crew training and evaluation with immediate success, resulting in large orders from the Air Ministry and the first production Lancaster being flown in October 1941. 
Avro’s initial contract was for 1,070 Lancasters but this quickly grew until the orders for the bomber was too much for Avro and work was contracted out to other companies, such as Armstrong Whitley, Vickers Armstrong and Austin Morris. In all, 7,377 heavily armed Lancasters were built. It had eight 0.303 machine guns in various turrets on board and, as time progressed, the bomb bay in the plane was changed to allow such mighty bombs as the ‘Grand Slam’ to be carried. The ‘Grand Slam’ at 22,000 lb (9979 kg) was the heaviest bomb carried in World War Two.

The Lancasters took part in many raids on Germany in World War Two, with the most famous bombing raid the ‘Dambuster Raids’. For this raid heavily modified Lancasters used bouncing bombs to destroy German dams and of the nineteen Lancasters that took part, eight planes were lost. The Avro Lancaster was Bomber Command’s most famous bomber and flew more than 156,000 sorties, dropping a total of 608,000 tons of high explosive bombs and more than 51 million incendiary bombs.
