Young Fanti Girl. 7 years old. Cape Coast.
When we walked into her family's compound she extended her hand and said, "Hello, my name is Crystal-belle"
Crystal-belle saw my camera around my neck and asked me to take a picture of her.
I said, "sure" and then she gave me this pose. 💕 #blackgirlmagic Truly. Effortlessly.

In the eye of the storm…
They say it’s calm in the eye of the storm. (Don’t they?) They also say pack a thermometer when you travel to Africa. And take acetaminophen, ibuprofen or aspirin along. But they don’t tell you to take some tablets along for the local kids as well. Probably because you are not expected to come in close and regular contact with them. In any case, the little boy in the picture was not sick. (Sigh of relief?) Just tired. But during my second week in Sang two of the kids who visited our site regularly, showed up like ghosts of themselves. Not ghosts able to walk through walls, but ghosts who could not take an extra step. They laid on our wobbly wooden benches and wouldn’t respond, not even move sides. They burned with a fever even a hand could safely diagnose. And if it wasn’t for our acetaminophen, ibuprofen and aspirin, they would have remained there till--well, who knows. Kids in Sang leave and return home alone. Would somebody have looked for them? And when? I guess it is not just calm in the eye of the storm. It’s also lonely...

For the past few years, South African photographer Paul Shiakallis has been documenting the lives of a group of leather-clad women from Botswana's heavy metal subculture known as the "Queens of Marok" – Marok means "rocker" in the local Setswana language.
In his photo series Leathered Skins, Unchained Hearts, Shiakallis highlights the lives of these women, who are trying to express themselves by defying a patriarchal society.
According to Shiakallis, being a Marok is harder for women than men because they face a lot more criticism from public. Describing the shoot, Shiakallis told BuzzFeed: "Some women were still 'coming out' as rockers and were not ready to be photographed. In other situations, men would thwart the shoots because they did not want their women to be in the presence of another man (me, the photographer) or to have the recognition of being a Marok." #africa #southafrica #southernAfrica #Botswana #women #africanwomen #creatives #africanCreatives #heavyMetsl #morak #feminism #womanism #photography #africanphotography #blackwomen #blackCreatives

I stopped in my tracks and inhaled deep as a nostalgic crisp wave of air in Canada last week suddenly put me back on safari in Kenya. I'll listen to my new African tunes on the subway or at home and close my eyes... my hips sway on the dance floor in Tanzania barefoot, sand all over my toes and in the roots of my hair. I can feel the warmth from the local friends I've made, as they smile and take my hand, teach me another move. My heart awakens for a few precious moments.
There is a lot to focus on here in NY, each day is always packed- I know how to gravitate towards all the good vibes, so I can feel settled...but that's the worst part. I don't like getting comfortable here. I know I don't want to settle here, I know that I don't belong here, I have felt where I am the most me.
It's so easy to get wrapped up in this little concrete bubble place....hustle hard then journey again, I tell myself. #explore #yoga #inspire #africa #kenya 📸@ebru_85

'Brave Beauties' is another serie of amazing portraits made by Zanele Muholi since 2015. Yaya Mavundla has been portrayed by Muholi on several occasions and 2 of her portraits are part of the exhibition in Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. Yaya is also writing about her experiences as a transgender women. The article about the funeral of her friend Iko Mash, where an uncle keeps referring to 'he' and not using the name she had chosen for herself, is an exceptional insight in her community. It is tough not to be recognised and accepted for who you are. Zanele is in this sense really a light in the darkness for the @bravebeautiesrsa

Q. How do you think your style incorporates/blends elements of your African and LGBTQ identity? "The African identity is like... I feel like I don’t have to prove it - I’m black and that talks by itself. I think because I had this experience of always being identified as outsider because of black - [being] African - made me understand that I am incorporating African identity any way. It’s not enclosed but it’s just in myself. I like to add African accessories but when I look in the mirror I directly see my African identity.

And for the queer part it’s being able to wear whatever I feel comfortable and empowered in. Whatever is masculine, feminine or gender neutral or androgynous without having a second thought about it." - PO (she/they, IG: @po.b.k.lomami, Twitter: @lomamipo, Facebook: Po B. K.
