A greater understanding of physics and the law of universe have allowed scientists to conclude that we can’t travel back in time, but we can travel to the future.
Einstein first proposed that travelling away from the Earth at the speed of life would slow down time for the traveller.
Theoretical physicist and string theorist, Brian Greene, said that you can build a spaceship, go out into space and travel at the speed of light, turn around and come back. While travelling, time stays slow relative to people who are standing still on the Earth. As a result, you would be going fast while your clock would still be going slow. When you step out of the ship you’re 1 year older but the Earth could have gone through 10,000, 100,000 or a million year depending on how close you are to the speed of light.
Stephen Hawking mentioned that it’d take 6 years at full power just to reach these speeds:
-after the first 2 years to reach half light speed and be far outside the solar system
-after another 2 years to travel at 90% of light speed
-after another 2 years of full thrust to travel at 98% of light speed and each day on the ship would be a year on the Earth
Thus, a trip to the edge of the galaxy would take 80 years of those on board.
