{New Recipe} Not all gluten-free flours are created equal. In fact most of them aren't all that healthy and have less nutritional value than white flour (less protein, less dietary fibre). If you do find a healthier gluten-free flour, odds are they contain legume-based flours, which makes them high in FODMAPs and not very tummy friendly.

As a Registered Nutritionist, I couldn't bring myself to use such poor flour substitutes, so I've made my own all purpose gluten-free flour mix that's much healthier than store-bought varieties, using several wholegrain flours that are higher in protein and fibre, while also being low FODMAP. Since starting the low FODMAP diet, this concept of a perfect day has become much closer for me and my IBS has never been better. Now I want to use my experience, professional training as a Registered Nutritionist, and my love of good food to give back and help you to have a less irritable life.

I love having berries with my breakfast but not all of them are low FODMAP. But that doesn't mean you have to cut them out altogether. Instead you can make your own mixed berry blend using safe portions sizes of appropriate berries. I like to mix together frozen blueberries, raspberries and strawberries. Then with a quick zap in the microwave they're ready to be added to breakfast like a thick sauce. Delicious!

Do you struggle to get enough fibre in your day that your body can tolerate? One of my tricks is to have wholegrains for breakfast in a porridge (I prefer oats but quinoa, millet and buckwheat are good too). Another trick is to add nuts or seeds, which also add healthy fats - walnuts are my current favourite. I normally add a tablespoon of desiccated coconut too.

Lastly I always add some fruit. This is the hardest part on a low FODMAP/fructose diet because the choices are limited AND you have to watch your portion sizes. When passionfruit are in season, I use them often because they are little fibre bombs that are delicious and safe.
