The Chinese influence on Thai food is unmistakable, as many, many Chinese immigrants made the arduous journey from provinces like Yunnan, in China's south, to places like Laos, Thailand and Myanmar.

This one was a bit unexpected, as I was actually meeting someone to sample some of Hua Hin's Dim Sum and ended up tasting this unusual Chinese soup.
The dim sum was OK, but it was this soup that struck me. It basically consists of pork ribs simmered for a few of hours in a broth of herbs and spices; think star anise, cinnamon, cloves, dang gui seeds (native to China), cumin and garlic; there may be other additional components. Lots of mushrooms, various kinds of vegetables and tofu. There may be other Chinese herbs as well. It is an acquired taste, but locals rave about the medicinal qualities.
If in Hua Hin, try it at Raan Jay Rayon Dton Dim Sam Pattani, a family run business over many decades on the corner of Phetkhasem Road and Soi Hua Hin 60. Elsewhere in Thailand, it is often available at places serving Dim Sum.
Give it a try and see what you think
