I finished this a couple of days ago and I loved it. A 3.8/5★, possibly.

I had been wanting to read something by Cather for a long time and I'm glad I began with this. The book relates the story of a dainty lady in a laid back American railroad town and how she affected the lives of people around her and despite looking like the symbol of strength and beauty, had a vulnerability unknown to the world.
It is narrated from a young boy's perspective who falls in and out of love with the woman and continues to respect and fondly remember her even after her death.

There is little thrilling action and the plot is a lazy, laidback tale of a town and inhabitants, about how people and places change with time and doesn't talk about much and yet talks so much. The glimpses into human lives and relationships I gain with these books are incomparable and I love the experience of going through them. It's a very sweet read for me, just like Meave Binchy's The Copper Beech, in case you're interested in more from this genre.

Washington Irving's house (April 3, 1783 – November 28, 1859) was an American short story writer, essayist, biographer, historian, and diplomat of the early 19th century. He is best known for his short stories "Rip Van Winkle" (1819) and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" (1820), both of which appear in his book The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. His historical works include biographies of George Washington, Oliver Goldsmith, and Muhammad, and several histories of 15th-century Spain dealing with subjects such as Christopher Columbus, the Moors and the Alhambra. Irving served as the U.S. ambassador to Spain from 1842 to 1846. #washingtonirving #americanliterature #sleepyhollow #sunnyside #rockefeller

This is what my day looks like. Overwhelming but a little exciting. I’m already exhausted and I have at least another 15 pages to write. Today’s term paper: The Viral Metaphor: HIV/AIDS as Computer Virus in Cyberpunk Fictions. It’s actually a pretty cool topic but I always struggle to get going on a thing. Gonna play some 80s techno-pop and techno-goth music when I get stuck and drink a pot or three of coffee. .

My Favorite Reads of 2017
I'll be posting my favorite reads of 2017 for the first 25 days of December!
✨✨✨
Day 17: INVISIBLE MAN by Ralph Ellison
✨✨✨
The nameless main character of this American classic spends the novel discovering systemic racism and internalized hatred wherever he goes. He is quick to anger, deeply thoughtful and insightful, quick to trust, intelligent but often blind to context and veiled meanings, with a postmodern-novel tendency to be in the right place at the right time. He is constantly reaching out to find truth, to make a difference, only to falter. The book builds into a climax of gunfire, sorrow, and disillusionment. A brilliant classic.

#richardbach#jonathanlivingstonseagull#thenewcompleteedition#oneandonly#seagull#americanliterature#bestseller

"Later we realized that maybe we haven't been listening to them at all. “There is a Catskill eagle in some souls that can alike dive down into the blackest gorges, and soar out of them again and become invisible in the sunny spaces. And even if he forever flies within the gorge, that gorge is in the mountains; so that even in his lowest swoop the mountain eagle is still higher than other birds upon the plain, even though they soar.”

"It was a blistering day. Isaiah had walked for hours in a self-induced trance. He could do that now. See without seeing, hear without hearing. There was no point being observant anymore. It only reminded him that he'd failed."
.
I read this one in two nights. it's been a while since I've been so captivated by a book. I stayed up until three a.m. reading and then couldn't wait to get home from work to get back to it 🤓 I have a habit of getting distracted but not this time!
.
meaningful, compelling, honest and suspenseful. those are a few words that I would use to describe IQ. definitely two thumbs up and I will be looking forward to other titles by joe ide 🙌

#Latergram of Edith Wharton’s first living quarters in Paris. She moved into 53 Rue de Varenne after her marriage fell apart. The apartment was owned by George Washington Vanderbilt II. In June 2015, I was on a walking tour (with coworkers on a work trip) and we randomly stumbled down the street and found her apartment—a happy encounter!

Here is The Mark Twain House and Museum (formerly the Clemens family’s house) one summer past, in Hartford, Connecticut. It is located on Nook Farm, neighboring The Harriet Beecher Stowe House. This must have been around Independence Day one year, given the decorations. I have been in love with this house for quite a while, and I name Mark Twain as one of my very first literary influences—even if I will probably never reach the level of great humor and satire as he did.

This remains one of the most memorable road trips I've taken where we did nothing but look at the trees and get inspired. I was at, what I felt to be, the heart of American literature and everything about it was perfect. The fall colors made me think of all the writers and poets from the region and before I knew it we were driving into a charming town and heading into a used-book store. And I got exactly what I wanted...a collection of sublime poetry that would put into words what I saw around me. I vowed to return to #NewEngland on a "literary" road trip another time. Can't wait to go back. .#Robertfrost #poetry #books #bookstagram #americanliterature
