Getting in the holiday spirit 🎄⛄️🎁

As I posted in a previous education post: socialization is immensely important for puppies.
When I first started to learn about Dovah’s personality it was expressed that he is very shy and cautious of new people. This is really common in wolfdogs and also can be a behaviorism seen in Northern Breeds/Spitz Breeds, Working Breeds and Primitive Breeds.
It was recommended Dovah went to a home environment that had the time, resources and ability to commit to properly socializing him.
His shy personality really drew me to him as Kyro is completely opposite and is an extremely social dog.
It was pretty obvious immediately that Dovah’s socialization would require much more time than Kyro’s ever did.
I started the long and slow process of introducing him to new people in controlled, specific situations.
Working at a 24/7 animal emergency hospital has been a big help as the staff here understands behavior and how to approach a uncertain puppy.
Dovah, so far, has surpassed all expectations and is surprisingly confident when it comes to new places/adventuring.
While he still has a great shyness toward men (especially with facial hair and hats) he has really warmed up to women.
It’s taken a lot of positive interactions to help build up his confidence, but he’s making remarkable progress.
It certainly helps that his Brother is a social butterfly and really instills a desire for seeking attention- even from strangers.
Ensuring that every interaction with both new and old people in a positive manner has been the biggest challenge of this. Wolfdogs tend to be more sensitive than typical dogs. One negative experience can be life lasting and really set you leaps and bounds backwards.
Directing every interaction, explaining to people how to approach and rewarding positive behaviors thus far has really made a difference.
I’m beyond proud of him and am happy to see all of the time and effort invested paying off. He’s has the sweetest, most cuddly disposition once he’s warmed up to people.
This is just a reminder that all dogs (with or without content) are a lifestyle commitment and time investment.
