New apple Watch 3 Rumor Predicts Surprise Omission
Apple exec Kevin Lynch (assisted by Minnie Mouse) talks.
In the usual frenzy of rumors and counter-rumors about the new Apple iPhones, other Apple updates, such as the Apple Watch, get little coverage.
Still, we know that a recent forecast from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo from KGI Securities suggested a third-generation of Apple Watch – which may be revealed at the next Apple keynote, widely expected to be held in September – will come with an embedded electronic LTE sim in some models.
Now, that forecast has been updated with a couple more details, as reported by MacRumors.
That LTE esim, it now seems, has one slightly surprising omission: it won’t turn the Watch into a phone. KGI had already predicted that the esim would be LTE, not 3G, which limits the markets that can use it.
The latest suggestion is that Apple won’t let the Watch make voice calls over the cellular network.
Of course, LTE signals are usually capable of supporting voice calls, but that’s not the plan here, it seems. KGI says that it expects Apple will want to improve the user experience of the Watch’s data transmission before it makes voice calls possible. , VOIP calls from services such as Skype and FaceTime haven’t been ruled out.
Let’s take a step back here. Do you really want to make calls on a Watch? Isn’t all a bit too Dick Tracy? I’ve taken the odd call on my Watch when I wouldn’t have reached the iPhone in time, but it’s never offered comparable audio quality to the phone. And, I admit it, even in private I feel a bit of a fool talking and listening to my wrist.
Still, every extra feature is a bonus, I guess.
The latest word from KGI contradicts one earlier prediction: who will make the baseband chip. Bloomberg had previously said Intel would make this but KGI now says it’s going to be Qualcomm as its solution is smaller and less power-hungry, apparently.
Also previously, there has been conjecture that an LTE esim could make Android compatibility more likely, though KGI says that’s not on the cards, this year, at least.
