Tanzanian tail-less whip scorpion. First time i've taken him out in like 4 months. They may look alien and dangerous, however, they're actually completely harmless unless you get their claws hugged on you haha. Hurts a tiny bit!

Meet Cuddles and Squishy! We’ve had these guys for years, and I feel that they deserve more social media love.
Cuddles is an Asian forest scorpion (first two pics) and Squishy (third pic) is a Desert Hairy Scorpion - both are venomous, but Squishy’s venom is more potent than Cuddles.

I placed them under a UV light to show off the amazing glow which is caused by a special fluid beneath their exoskeleton.

Whip scorpions - or vinegaroons - are arachnids they live in humid, dark habitats, usually under logs, rocks or other debris. They get their name from their specialized flagellum - or tail - that resembles a whip that can spray acetic acid out of the end to deter predators! The name vinegaroon comes from the fact that acetic acid is the main component of vinegar!

It's a bird, no it's a plane haha. Jumping spiders(#salticidae) are talented among arachnids for their agility, intelligence etc.. But did you know that there little mobile hydraulic machines? You'd expect them to be packing on two large specialized highly developed leg muscles like grasshoppers and crickets, at a glance they like pretty basic.. a spiders leg is composed of 7 segments a (coax, trochanter, femur, patella, tibia, metatarsus and lastly tarsus) just as we do they have flexor and extensor muscles, which are in charge of controlling movement at the joints between the two leg segments. Lacking extensor muscles at two of the six leg joints (femur~patella) and (tibia~metatarsus) which translates to not being able to fully extend your legs with muscle power alone, in which is a requirement for jumping , a solution is to use the power of fluid.. When they need to launch themselves in the air, they simply contact muscles joining the upper and lower celphalothorax, this then sudden decrease change in pressure rushes hemolymoph(blood) to the legs, snapping them back and propelling them onwards. But not complete daredevils, in preparation for a jump they'll secure a self made bungee cord should they miss the mark seen in the photo above.

Trying to get a good picture of Morrissey at any time is difficult when they're always hidden away! So it's rare for my fuzzy little one to be out exploring. Tried to get a picture of them hunting but they're too quick🙄

There's more to arachnids besides Spiders (Araneae) and Scorpions (Scorpiones). These two groups, along with the Mites and Ticks (Acari) are among the most familiar and famous arachnids, but there are several other less well-known groups, some of which are known to occur in Singapore, like the Whip Scorpions (Thelyphonida or Uropygi). Containing about 100 species, found mostly in tropical and subtropical climates in Asia, the Americas, and a single species in West Africa, these nocturnal creatures dig burrows in the soil or beneath logs, rotting wood, and rocks. They are mostly forest inhabitants, although one species, Mastigoproctus giganteus, is known to inhabit deserts and other arid landscapes in the southern United States.

Like Scorpions, Whip Scorpions are predators, feeding on insects, spiders, and other arthropods, which they seize and crush with their pedipalps ('pincers'). They have the classic arachnid body plan - four pairs of legs, a cephalothorax (head and thorax), and an abdomen. Unlike Spiders and Scorpions though, the Whip Scorpion walks on three pairs of legs; the first pair of legs are elongated, and serve as sensory appendages, much like the antennae of insects. As it moves about, the Whip Scorpion taps the ground with its first pair of legs, which provides it with information about its surroundings, and helping it to detect any prey nearby.

Whip Scorpions derive their name from the long, thin flexible 'tail' at the tip of the abdomen. Unlike in the Scorpion, there is no stinger. If threatened by another animal, the Whip Scorpion will rear up and spread its pedipalps, threatening to pinch anything that comes too close. Alternatively, it can turn around and spray chemicals from a gland at the base of its tail. While this chemical discharge, which contains acetic acid, is harmless to the skin, it can cause severe discomfort if it manages to enter the eyes, mouth and nostrils. And so the Whip Scorpion repels predators with a concentrated vinegar spray; the strong smell of vinegar after a close encounter with a Whip Scorpion has led to it also being called the Vinegaroon.

Paimon, my Poecilotheria regalis (unsexed), finally has some decent photos *plus a short video* devouring some lats. It's really hard to take pictures of him/her coz it honestly scares me 😂 Pokies are fast and can lunge at you. Also, Paimon is only 2-3 inches, I don't wanna panic and end up accidentally squishing him/her (idk how but it can happen) But yeah, i love my tarantulas so much, I'd honestly rather get bitten lol 💁

Many people use food grade plastic storage containers to make pools for hermit crabs. I did once, and it didn't end too well. Hermit crabs will pick and try just about anything- including plastic. After about a week I noticed the plastic food container I was using was chewed and leaking. Upon further inspect I found out my crab had been eating it despite having a constant, varied food supply. She even ate a hole through the bottom and it would leak out in 10 minutes of being filled. Had she ingested more, it could have killed her. Now, taking this into consideration we know of the dangers of eating plastic, knowing crabs will willingly eat this for no known reason is nerve racking. We know they know what they're doing but we can't have them eating something unsafe. Not only that, but some plastic food containers can deteriorate into the water overtime like it did for me. for many of us, we use reptile bowls as alternatives- as did I. Eventually I began to notice that the color from my reptile bowl had faded and came to realize that these things are actually painted and that paint can deteriorate into the water overtime, leaching harmful compounds into it as well. With this conclusion I switched to a stainless steel dog bowl hoping for the best, but upon learning of the possible problems and risks from using even marine safe metals (see previous post), I came to a conclusion. THE ONLY SAFE WAY TO PROVIDE WATER FOR A CRAB IS through glassware! Glass is totally safe for crabs, it can't leach anything into their water, they can't eat through it, and unless it shatters it will even help retain heat and keep the water at a safe and steady ambient temperature. You can buy unpainted and un colored glass dog bowl add ons, remove any rubber on them, and use them instead. Buying medium to large is best and better yet, you can use suction cups to put part of a climbing net or fake plants in the bowl for easy access while providing a larger amount of space underwater for your crabs. I encourage anyone to switch to glass in order to avoid a possible plastic eating incident, unknowing deadly metal use, paint deterioration poisoning, or a plastic deterioration problem.

Mated female Pterinochilus Murinus. I thought that joining a bunch of tarantula pages and stuff would result in me meeting a bunch of tarantula keepers who actually know things about spiders....but nope 😂 The amount of tarantula keepers who fall into the media trap is ridiculous. There are still a ton of keepers who think black widows and brown recluses are these extremely dangerous spiders that will kill you if you get bit. I posted my Sicarius handling video to facebook and jeez, people watch these "top 10 most venomous spiders" videos on YT and suddenly think they are experts. Yes, there are dangerous spiders out there, but you are more likely to die by going for a drive than you are by a spider. #spiders #spider #spidersofinstagram #tarantula #tarantulas #tarantulasofinstagram #fang_gang #venom #pterinochilusmurinus #pterinochilus #orange #orangebaboon #orangebiteything #orangebaboontarantula #arachnids #arachnidsofinstagram #arachnoboards #arachnophobia #potd #animalphotography #photography #wildlife #wildlifephotography #nature #naturephotography #pets #petsofinstagram #animals #animalsofinstagram
