[Part 13/56] #DataCentreoftheDay: Bonnington House. Pretty rainy day to visit this office converted into a data centre alongside Millwall Dock.
.
This data centre looks similar to the offices that are next door. However, it has the recognisable traits of a data centre with numerous security cameras, cooling units on the roof, external power units adjoining the building and security screens visible through the window.

Fun fact: The Palace of Fine Arts is surrounded by a small artificial lagoon that is supposed to mimic European Classical Styles. The water acts as a mirror surface to reflect the surrounding structures!

A closer view of Fallingwater's cantilevered terraces from a small bridge that leads to the home's main entrance. Although the Kaufmann family meant to have a view of nature from a home at the base of the waterfall, instead Frank Lloyd Wright integrated the house with the site. The stairway in the photo allows direct access to the waterfall from the living room of the residence and provides a sort of natural air conditioner. The sound of the waterfall and views of nature can be experienced from every room of the house. The same stream feeds a swimming pool at the home’s guest house.
.
The lower cantilever is a terrace off the main living area, while the upper terrace belongs to the master bedroom. Some seasonal tour options include brunch or hors d’oeuvres served on the terraces!

'Fountain- Colony Theatre', print on card, paint on polystone pot, 2017 at The Midland Morecambe, in This Building for Hope, on until 22nd October. I made a series of Fountains for the interior of the Midland which were influenced by the recurring fountain motif in the Seaside Moderne architecture I viewed on Miami South Beach. The Fountain was used as a symbol of the social attitudes of the time, and the ideology behind this optimistic architecture- everthing was spouting upwards, full of excitement and progress. However, this progress was quickly halted by World War 2.
The Fountains also reference the abundant foliage in Miami South Beach which was transported there to make the area seem more 'tropical'. Palm trees, parrots, flamingoes and exotic flowers were all brought there to create a more exotic environment. The flamingoes flew home but the other non indigeneous immigrants remain. This process to 'tropicalise' an area is not at all unique to Miami, I have seen this done in numerous locations. For example, palm trees have been planted on the Isle of Bute.

[Part 12/56] #DataCentreoftheDay: Harbour Exchange Square. This distinctive fully-glazed blue reflective building is another of Canary Wharf’s data centres. .
The office buildings at 6-7 Harbour Exchange Square were designed by Frederick Gibberd Coombes & Partners and built as part of a development masterplanned by @sheppard_robson, built between 1987 and 1990. All of the concrete framed buildings in the complex are clad in matching silver and blue reflective-glass curtain-walling.
.
By being entirely call in completely reflective material the building has taken one of the key aesthetics of the data centre to the limit. Although the building is extremely distinctive it also hides as its facades show only what is around it.

Crossed off my bucket list: visit the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Fallingwater. ❤️ Completed in 1937, it was the weekend home of the Kauffman family (of Pittsburgh's Kaufmann's department store). It's been hailed by Time as Wright's "most beautiful job," and is listed in the Smithsonian's "28 places to visit before you die."
.
The Kaufmanns' original intent was to have a house built at the base of the waterfall on their property in Mill Run, PA, 45 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. If so, it would have stood at the spot where I took this photo (the "iconic" Fallingwater shot). Instead, Wright integrated his design with the site, building the house in cantilevered platforms over the waterfall and organically integrating it with nature.
.
Since 1964, Fallingwater has operated as a museum. To visit, book tours well in advance: there are basic tours and longer in-depth tours, where interior photography is permitted. You can also book brunch or sunset tours seasonally. On this trip, I only took the basic tour but will be back for another visit - the guides say it is beautiful in all seasons, but particularly in the late June and July when rhododendrons and wisteria bloom. I'm also planning to visit Polymath Park, a group of three other Wright-designed homes about half an hour from Fallingwater, which offer a variety of tours and even overnight stays, as well as the nearby Kentuck Knob house.

Can't find too much information on this glass, but to my relatively untrained eye it looks as though it depicts the beheading of St Catherine and is 16th century (??). It can be found in a hallway at Castle Howard and was originally housed in the Howard family's chapel before the windows were replaced by Burne-Jones in the 19th century. Rather lovely anyway I think. •

An awesome afternoon exploring another of our Great #british #industrial #history sites: The @thepiecehall is a Grade I listed building in Halifax, West Yorkshire, England. It was built as a cloth hall for handloom weavers to sell the woollen cloth "pieces" they had produced. From 1779 onwards, Yorkshire cloth merchants would spend their Saturdays hustling for the best price on their locally spun cloth and fuelling the industrial revolution. I must also admit that I had no idea people from Halifax are known as "Haligonians" lol #worthavisit #entrepreneurship #entrepreneurs #titansofindustry #historicalplace #merchants #britishempire #trading #industrialrevolution #yorkshire #weavers #clothmerchants #piecehall #architecturalhistory #historicalbuilding #economichistory #brits #success #business #economy #18thcentury #19thcentury #madeinbritain 🇬🇧 🇬🇧 🇬🇧 🇬🇧

janemagoncollections: janemagon.com The EIFFEL TOWER is a wrought iron construction named after Gustave Eiffel whose company designed & built the tower (1887-1889) as the entrance to the World's Fair. Initially criticised, the design has become a global cultural icon of France &!one of the most recognisable &!visited structures in the world. The tower was the product of Maurice Koechlin & Emile Nouguier (two senior engineers) as a centre piece for the proposed 1889 fair. During the World's Fair (& at the top), there was a post office where visitors could send letters & postcards as a memento of their visit. After dark the tower was lit by hundreds of gas lamps. Two searchlights were mounted for imaginative illumination. The tower was an instant success with the public. Eiffel was permitted to allow the tower to stand for 20 years (to 1909), when it's ownership would revert to Paris as the plan was for it to be dismantled. As the tower proved to be valuable for communication it was allowed to remain. Eiffel made use of the top of the tower by carrying out meteorological observations & also used the to perform experiments on the action of air resistance on falling bodies. In 2017 it is still the major symbol of Paris. #eiffel  #eiffeltower  #paris  #engineering  #engineer  #engineeringhistory  #culturalhistory  #lifts  #culturalheritage  #otis  #cantilever  #sproket  #scaffold  #caissons  #piles  #wroughtiron  #structure  #myphoto  #myphotography  #structuraldesign  #architecture  #view  #archicturalphotography  #viewofparis  #arhitecturelovers  #architecturalhistory  #architecturalhistorian
