This striking architectural plan from the RIBA Collections dates from 1849 and shows Robert B. Dockray’s design for the Great Circular Engine House, built to replace the Camden Goods Station. Now home to well-known venue the Roundhouse, this Grade II* Listed building has retained much of its original structure and fabric despite its motley 170 year history.
The circular hub shown in Robert B. Dockray’s drawing, once home to a rail turntable, has since been repurposed as the Roundhouse’s dramatic auditorium. John McAslan & Partners’ extensive renovation, completed in 2006 and presented with an RIBA Award in 2007, repaired much of the original Victorian structure and timber rafters to leave them intact. The original undercroft below, once a service area for trains, was adapted to create studio space.
On Tuesday 31 October the Roundhouse will play host to the RIBA Stirling Prize event, where we announce the UK’s best new architectural project. Be among the first to discover the winner. This year we're excited to be offering a special student ticket priced at just £49.50, giving you the chance to be inspired as the next generation of architects. All full-time students, including those studying towards Part III are eligible. Book now by searching Stirling Prize on architecture.com

As Bywater developed into an urban neighborhood, the Olivier Plantation House remained a vestige of the area’s rural past. A group of local preservationists fought the building's demolition in 1949, ultimately losing the battle but not the war. They later formed the Louisiana Landmarks Society and went on to save other historic buildings in New Orleans, including the Pitot House, Gallier Hall and the Carrollton Courthouse. Geographer Richard Campanella explains more in the December issue of #PreservationinPrint. Follow our profile link to read more!

The Edwin Gould School, built in 1927 for the Good Will-Hinckley Home Association, an institution founded in the late 1800s to serve and shelter destitute children. The school has evolved greatly over its 100+ year history (it just became a charter school only a few years ago), but many of the original buildings luckily remain standing today. And even on a bleak and rainy fall day, this beautiful Georgian Revival still elicits a reaction (at least from me 👌)

EN - During Montreal's 1883 Winter Festival, an ice castle as built for the first time in Dominion square, with its real size towers and battlements. It would be redone and perfected until 1887. This gave birth to an architectural style unique to Montreal called "chateau de glace", or "ice castle". Therefore, if you happen to see a house with a similar style to the one pictured here (battlement being the easiest way to identify it), you can know in one quick glance that it was built around the year 1885.

The Sherburne House, built between 1695-1703 in Portsmouth, NH, and constructed in the postmedieval style. This house is one of the earliest remaining homes from the Strawbery Banke settlement of the 1630s, specifically the area known as Puddle Dock. Almost three centuries of history had completely transformed the home into a two-family dwelling that was covered by brick veneer, the front gables lost to time. It received a major restoration to return it back to its original appearance by the Strawbery Banke Museum, which acquired the home and several others in the Puddle Dock neighborhood that were threatened by urban renewal in the mid-1900s.

A day spent in the overly opulent Residenz is a day well spent! This ‘Green Gallery’ is a lovely specimen of the mid- to late eighteenth century French inspired styles that the Bavarian kings were so fond of.

Raphael Soriano (1904-88) is among the lesser known protagonists of the so-called California Modern who nonetheless made a lasting contribution to the modular building construction with steel and aluminium. Wolfgang Wagener's 2002 monograph is the first in-depth take on the architect whose houses for photographer Julius Shulman and the Case Study House program actually deserve the same admiration as other more famous examples of modernism in and around Los Angeles. Wagener recounts the biography and career of Soriano, clarifies myths and rumors surrounding Soriano's work and doesn't omit the tragic end of the architect as a lonely and impoverished man. The book is a must-read for anyone looking for a deeper insight into the California Modern aside the big names.

The Ilojo Bar used to sit on Tinubu Square. A poorly built but prime example of the ‘Brazilian-inspired’ Georgian style architecture common to Lagos Island.
.
Not minding that proportions were a bit off here, these buildings represent a part of Lagos’s history. When they get torn down, it is disheartening. I was billed to take measurements of this building in 1992; we were denied the opportunity then. It’s gone now.
.
It is time to save what’s left. And also, more importantly, to recognise that a treasure trove of Modernist-inspired buildings from the 1970’s onward are under even more serious threat (untouched example in Victoria Island on slide 2). Many are being bastardised [through renovation] by architects who appear to have undergone the completely wrong training in school! 😱😱

Looking back through photographs from one of the tours of The Midland from the Transatlantic Seaside Moderne symposium in October. It was such a great day full of interesting conversation and I'm so grateful to @englishlakes and @aceagrams for their support to enable it to happen, and everyone who came. This group was led by Brian Jenkins, the in house historian at the hotel, who has worked there since it reopened in 2008, and moved his family to the area at the time of its refurbishment with the hope of getting a job there, as he loved the hotel so much. The other tour was led by Barry Guise, one of the main members of The Friends of The Midland group who campaigned to find a developer to take on the hotel during its severe decline, and the co-author of the book 'The Midland- Morecambe's White Hope' (which I would recommend).

New in: „1945. Krieg - Zerstörung - Aufbau. Architektur und Stadtplanung 1940 - 1960“, the catalogue of the 1995 exhibition at Akademie der Künste Berlin. It sheds light on the continuities between urban plannings during and after WWII. The foremost experts on this topic Werner Durth, Niels Gutschow and Jörn Düvel focus on Berlin as the former German capital and bulwark against the communist GDR whose architecture existed in a constant competition with the brother state. The final part of the book is dedicated to plannings in German cities, among them Düsseldorf, Hannover and Hamburg, as well as GDR cities like Dresden and Rostock so as to enable a comparison between the concepts of architecture and town planning in both German states.

The medieval era with a glass of wine in hand:
Around Madrid there are two communities called Castilla La Mancha and Castilla y León. Castilla comes from castle. Castle means medieval. In both places there is plenty of good wine and also plenty of medieval reminiscences. You can find stuff like that, and in our case with a glass of wine in hand. Maybe because Philip the second decided that the Capital of Spain would be Madrid we have now many towns not too far from Madrid that are nearly as they were 5 centuries ago. Como and enjoy listening about castles, cavaliers, etc, with a glass of wine in hand. 🍷

A cool shot of some of the 14 Assyrian-inspired colossal busts representing the giants of finance (seven are smiling, seven frowning) that project from pier-like stone extensions of the 19th floor wall facing Exchange Place/William street of 20 Exchange Place/City Bank Farmers Trust by Cross & Cross (1931). | Photo courtesy of Architectural Forum |

Today's research on fashion and architecture reminded me of this stunning image--Ann Demeulemeester in Maison Guiette, the Le Corbusier home she owned. #fashionandarchitecture #lecorbusier #maisonguiette #belgianfashion #modernarchitecture #fashionhistory #architecturalhistory

Making gratitude a part of my life - today and forever!
*

I don't know how many of you know, but I am actually a trained architect by profession (in fact, I have a Masters Degree in Architecture). After practicing in Dubai, I moved to Hyderabad after I got married, and the rest is history.
*
*
Although I did do a few independent projects while here, I got into teaching architecture for a few years and then of course, the kids happened. But then, architecture itself wasn't giving me the satisfaction I craved in terms of creativity in India, and it's systemic faults. I was not happy, and felt I was being disloyal to my profession, and so I decided to quit and do something that made me happier.
*
*
Then I got into writing, and changed the course of my career completely. Now, I write with a passion that borders on obsessiveness, or so my family feels. But the architect in me still lingers on, still pauses at beautiful buildings, still appreciates the marvelous architectural history of our country and still longs for ways to rekindle the dormant light within her.

So recently, when we were on a holiday to Gujarat, I gave into one of my ardent desires, and that is to witness the glory of the Adalaj Stepwell in Ahmedabad. Ever since I had studied about it, I had wanted to visit it, and am so glad I could witness it's grandeur, it's beauty and that too, in the company of my father - who is my biggest inspiration and the reason I chose to be an architect. One of the most beautiful examples of architecture in India, the Adalaj Stepwell had me spellbound and thankful that I could cross this one off my bucket list, with my inspiration, my dad for company.

I hope you enjoyed this little glimpse into my background, and the history of our beautiful country. And I do hope we all make gratitude a part of our lives, today and forever.
