Scottish Colourist, George Leslie Hunter, began to visit Paris as early as 1907 where he became a fervent admirer of Cezanne and a devotee to the principles which underpinned the artist's practice, particularly as regards form and perspective. Further visits in the early 1920s and exposure to the increasing strides Matisse was making - pushing colour to the extreme as both a formal and decorative device - resulted in Hunter assimilating these qualities into his own work.
By 1923-26 he had emphatically hit his stride as an artist, creating a style that was progressive and distinctly his own. Thanks to a series of critically and commercially well-received exhibitions in Glasgow, Edinburgh, London and Paris he was, by this time, a relatively well recognised and celebrated Modernist. In fact in 1924, Hunter received a particularly notable commendation from the prominent Parisian art dealer Etienne Bignou, who believed "Matisse the only man in Paris the equal of Peploe and myself." ---

#ThrowBackThursday : #DeadDarlings came back for its second edition on the invitation of #W139 in 2006: exploring the life cycle of Dead Darlings. We asked for and showcased Darlings marking important transition in the makers’ oeuvres, to reflect on the idea of what it means to search for our own place in the real world as did the work we made. And oh, if you have any documentation shots of this edition of event, please get in touch with us, we would love to retrieve some of our precious memories! #MetamorphasisOfDarlings#DeadDarlingsCollective#ArtistCollective#ArtAuction

Gopal Ghose was one of the founders of the Calcutta Group, perhaps the first group of modernist painters in India. A trained sculptor from the Government College of art and Crafts, Chennai, under Devi Prasad roy Chowdhury, Ghose was drawn to the pictorial vocabulary developed by European expressionists and cubists to depict nature, which made him shift his gaze from sculpture to paintings.
For his love of landscapes he travelled extensively within India sketching paddy fields, bamboo groves and riverside life. His fondness for nature is evident in his works. adept with several mediums such as watercolour, tempera, pen and ink and pastel, his paintings have a miniature quality with an impressionist leaning.
