JANET DIRKSEN 'Derelict Karoo Farmhouse'
"Janet creates atmospheric landscapes which convey a sense of evoked memory and emotion. One is transported into a unique vision, and the essense of the subject. Clouds are a metaphor for the transience of the moment, and the force of nature. The narrative is ambiguous to allow the viewer a stronger connection, and to arrive at their own definition and relevant significance." -- www.princealbertopenstudios.art/HOME/Janet-Dirksen/
Greetings from Brussels! My name is Claire de Lune and I am taking over the DegreeArt Instagram for the next few days! I was in Ghent this weekend for an art show, and thought I'd stop off in some fabulous antique markets in Brussels before jumping on the Eurostar back to my studio in Margate🚀 In my recent interview with DegreeArt I spoke about being inspired by the beautiful objects we collect on our travels, and Brussels is a good place to find some amazing pieces! You can read the interview on the DegreeArt Blog. I look forward to sharing some of my art and processes with you 💕 xXXx

After a painting is complete I sit down and have a long conversation with it.
Until that point I have no idea what I’ve just done on the canvas. Reading our own images (or images in general) can be a challenge.
Back in grad school I learned a process for doing this. It requires days and days of quite literally asking the painting questions and then writing down whatever answers come to mind.
I’m still in the middle of it with this latest guy.
I’m not sure yet, but the title may be, Just Give It To Me. When I asked what that was about the painting told me about the pain that I love feeling, about the pain that is my teacher - teaching me to feel, and about how a certain level of intensity is sometimes needed to push us fully over the edge and into new territory.
Alongside this I’ve been diving heartily into Pema Chodron and all her wisdom on feeling our feelings, not running from the pain and being willing to sit with the discomfort.
I’m not dying, but sometimes it feels like that. It feels like part of my identity is dying. The character in this painting is exactly that. She’s like the skin that a lizard sheds. I keep reminding myself that there is already a healthy new layer of skin, and fresh cells already existing beneath the surface…
My deepest is wish is that what I go through can put a finger on your own experience and normalize this process of being human...so very, very human.
Sending love to you on your journey. /// Just Give It To Me, (detail), mixed media on board, 155x155cm, 2017. /// #ifeelthings#justgiveittome#painting#nothiding#this#her
