Had a great time reading The Brain That Changes Itself by Norman Doidge. Following up on some advice from the book, I decided to take up bouldering for the past 2 months to challenge myself, and learn some new movements. So far it has been a rich and joyful experience, and I am looking forward to many years of it.

Solving different problems in bouldering is great for mental focus while physically challenging you. I love the reward it gives when you finally solve a route after many tries. Definitely a great way to release stress at the end of the day.

Here are a few points from the book that I suggest you try to keep your brain healthy. Maybe work on one of these right away to get a head-start on the New Year!

1) Learning new cognitively rich physical activities that require intense focus, and that challenge you physically and mentally to help with neuroplasticity (new sport, new exercises, Dancing/new types of dances, Tai Chi, etc). 2) Learn a new language: During our critical period of learning from birth to puberty, whether we learn one or many languages, they are all mapped in the same area. Once past puberty, learning a new language is not processed in the same part of the brain anymore and is mapped elsewhere.

3) Education in a new field where you will master new skills. 
4) Play a musical instrument.
5) Sleep (Reaching REM sleep is critical for neuroplasticity to consolidate learning and memory). Exposure to screens during the evening is stopping us from achieving proper sleep.
6) Play brain/memory games. These days, our phones provide us with most of the information we need. When was the last time you had to remember a phone number? -As we get older, we rarely engage in tasks in which we must focus our attention as closely as we did when we were younger mastering new skills. -Competitive plasticity is where you will lose brain space of one task to another, so make sure you are not always doing the same things day in and day out year after year.

We live in a society where most of the activities we engage in put us in a position that allow us to hunch forward and forget about our posture ie. sitting at a desk job, looking down at our phones etc. Adding scapular retractions to your daily routine will help strengthen all the muscles around the shoulders to help pull the shoulder blades back and down and improve your posture. The day before my surgery I stopped by BluIce CryoSpa to try out the Cryo facial. It felt amazing during and for several hours after you could feel your face tighten while the skin felt softer to the touch. I highly recommend trying it if you have a chance. I was really hoping that with a night of ice, compression and sleeping with it in a boot would give some relief and allow me to get around today, but no such luck. I guess that popping sound I heard/felt when it happened was not in my imagination, as I'd hoped... 😢

Day 16: superman! This exercise is great to strengthen your core, improve back pain and provide better posture! Targeting the erector spinae, glutes and hamstrings. This exercise requires no equipment and is easy to incorporate into any daily routine. Too easy? Try holding opposite arm opposite leg for 3-5 seconds and then switch- this will activate those stabilizer muscles even more and give you a bit more of a challenge! You can even try this exercise in a 4pt position but remember to keep your back strait and your hips square to the floor!

LOW BACK STIFFNESS & TIGHTNESS

Who has suffered from this at some point in their life??🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️ I'd bet everyone has at one time . Whether it's from your job, hobbies, taking care of your kids, doggo... This video shows 3 exercises that can help prevent this stiffness and tightness that you can easily perform at home, work, etc.

1) Pelvic Tilts: this exercise helps promote movement at the hips which is important for so many activies of daily living. Such as: getting out of a chair, your car, picking up your child, and the list goes on. This exercise is going to help dissociate your hips from your low back as well. Why is this important? If we don't achieve this dissociation alot of movements that should be performed at the hips, happen at the low back and increased compression and/or pressure within these segments. This over time can create an environment for degeneration, herniation, and just over all BAD STUFF.

How to perform: lie on back with knees bent. Put hands on hip bones and bring your belly button towards the floor. This creates a POSTERIOR tilt of your pelvis which is what we want. Move between this position and bringing your hips back to the starting pos. Repeat 15 reps, 2 sets.

2) Hip flexor stretch: One of the reasons your pelvis may be stuck in an ANTERIOR tilt is due to these muscles. Specifically your PSOAS and RECTUS FEMORIS (one of your quad muscles). So to help bring your pelvis back into a more POSTERIOR position ( which is what will make your low back happy as I explained above) we must  decrease their tightness and prevent this restriction. 
How to perform: in the video I am stretching my RIGHT hip flexors. I perform the cue from the first video and bring my pelvis back into that POSTERIOR tilt. I also give myself a double chin to prevent any stress on my neck and to help align my spine. Then I lean forward, bringing my weight through my left ankle. You can hold this for 30 secs, 3 reps OR hold 5-10 secs and perform 10-12 reps to make it more dynamic.

Don't feel much of a stretch? Try elevating your back leg like I did. This targets the rectus femoris a little more as it's job is to also straighten the knee.
