Hello insta world!! The first video of many to come is here.  I'm going to start with what I see most often effecting people.  Low back pain and most often mechanical low back pain and SI Joint pain.

Most people who sit at a desk all day have their glutes (butt muscles) turned off.  Now they go to stand up, walk around maybe even run and bang 🚨 low back pain.  Now this occurs mainly because your main shock absorbers aka your glutes are not firing properly and now the forces placed on your body (gravity) ⏬are  being dispersed through your low back and hamstrings.  Heres a quick way to test your glutes and make sure they are firing properly. 🔸
In the next video Ill show you how to retrain and rewire your body to extend your hip properly and then how to strengthen your glutes! 🍑⏩

She has a keen interest in lower body (low back, hip and ankle) as well as concussion and neck related issues. She uses manual therapy, myofasical release techniques and corrective exercise programs to restore joint mobility, improve body awareness, strength and flexibility and most importantly, to prevent re-injury.

WHY? Well for one, how do you know if your athlete is ready to return to sport? Sure you can do your typical ligament stress tests but if you want to see the mechanics your athlete will be returning with, or the realistic type of stress that the knee will have to endure in the specific sport, then you would want to get creative with how you test the ligament. After you assess with an isolated stress test of the MCL, you may want to check if they can tolerate the weight of the leg against gravity, then jumping loads, and then in this example, we are demonstrating an “inside-of-the-foot” pass with a soccer ball which also places a certain degree of valgus on the knee (depending on how hard or far you are passing!). -

The other important thing to consider is loading the ligament for the purpose of recovery. It’s true, ligaments are not like muscles, they will not grow in size in response to training like your 💪. But when the right loads are placed on a ligament, the collagen will respond accordingly and align in the direction it needs to so that it may resist such stresses. The same idea applies to muscle strains and even fracture healing - appropriate stresses are important! So consider these progressions during the healing processes (keep them pain free and keep the progressions conservative so you’re not taking two steps backwards with your rehab). -

BPPV Assessment & Treatment!
MRI or x-ray☠️ will not be effective in diagnosing BPPV, as these types of imaging will not show the crystals💎 if they have migrated into the canals.
The best🥇 way to diagnose a person is to move their head💆🏻‍♂️ in a specific position to intentionally cause crystal💎 movement. The mismatched🚫 signalling mentioned in our previous post will result in rapid and specific eye👀 movements called “nystagmus”🌀.
A trained therapist will be able to assess the nystagmus and identify which ear👂🏻 and which canal the displaced crystals💎 are in. These tests are called the Dix-Hallpike and Head Roll Test (see pictures!)
Once the correct affected canal is identified, treatment can proceed. If the crystals💎 are free-floating in the canals, treatment involves moving the head💆🏻‍♂️ in a series of specific positions to coax the crystals💎 back to the utricle where they can re-embed themselves. This treatment is best☝🏻 performed by a therapist, rather than at home🏠, as they will be better able to control the head positions and movements required for optimal treatment🙂.
Once the crystals💎 are back in their original location, symptoms of vertigo🌀 should cease🖐🏻.

Flying to Calgary for Canadian Kinesiology Board meetings and this view reminded me of scars and the rest of our tissues. 
Scar tissue creates a barrier in functional tissue. It changes the way our ever connected web of fascia can move with our muscle and skin tissues, sometimes how organs and nerves communicate. Scar tissues are formed after trauma, invasive (surgery, laceration, etc) and non-invasive (bruises, torn or injured muscle, chronic postural dysfunction). While yes land isn’t a dynamic being like us humans, you can see how this gap and block in tissue could affect communication and interaction on a much larger scale! 
This is why treating injuries when they happen is key 🔑 AND why pain shouldn’t be left unassessed. Movement is prevention for chronic pain but poor movement can perpetuate a problem! And if there is a barrier to movement — see above 🤓

That’s because our profession is relatively new compared to household name professions like Massage, Physiotherapy and Chiropractic (relatively new meaning since the 70’s). What is an Athletic Therapist? We are therapists that treat injuries and work to get people better. Period. Whether you are an athlete or not. How we do that is similar to other professions in that we treat via hands-on manual therapy and use tools like ultrasound and muscle stim. But how we differ is time and exercise. AT’s traditionally spend longer with their clients (1 hour appointments) and weave exercise therapy into treatment. That’s not saying that some people in other professions don’t treat like this but for us this is the norm vs the exception. And the results show;  we aim to help clients return to their usual activities ASAP.
