#bestof2017: You surely remember wild Ulrich, #duke of Württemberg. Yes, the guy who slaughtered poor stable master Hans von Hutten in an act of overly romantic #courtshipbehavior.
•
Well, the story continues: Faced with investigations following the bloody dead, Ulrich justified his murder by claiming that Hans had an affair with his wife Sabina in the first place. Not surprisingly, no one believed him and resentment grew among the people. When Ulrich attacked the city of #reutlingen in 1519, this was quite the straw that broke the camel’s back.
•
As a response, the #swabianleague conquered Württemberg and forced Ulrich to escape. For 200,000 Gulden, Württemberg was sold to #austria in 1520, which was at that time ruled by Emperor #charlesV., one of the most powerful #leaders of all times. Württemberg remained under Austrian leadership until 1534, when Ulrich won back Württemberg in the battle of #lauffen.
•
During the Austrian occupation, Charles V. coined only one #goldgulden which is shown on the picture above. Although coined in large numbers, those coins are among the biggest rarities of Württemberg coinage as Ulrich, not surprisingly, melted down most of the pieces after he won back his dukedom.
•
Issued in 1520, this #gold coin is the first coin showing the #portrait of the only 20 year old #emperor. Pretty cool, isn’t it? Admittedly, he isn’t exactly the epitome of a pretty boy: He had a narrow, elongated face dominated by an aquiline nose and a heavy, protruding lower jaw together with thick, fleshy lips. It is said that the deformation of his #jaw was so extreme that he could not close his mouth properly and had problems with his speech… Poor boy.
•
Despite some aesthetic compromises, you will surely understand how pleased we were to get the #opportunity to put this beautiful and historically important piece up to our spring #auction. We can assure you that our #consignor was more than happy, seeing the coin jump from an estimate of €30,000 to €62,500, making it one of the top 3 coins of Charles V. sold in auction since 2000.

#bestof2017: Issued 1837 in #Taiwan in the middle of Emperor Daoguang’s reign, this so-called Old Man Dollar represents the first #Chinese silver #dollar ever struck.
•
Why Old Man Dollar? Well, certainly the gentleman depicted on the obverse of the coin looks rather experienced. In fact, the “old man” is #Shou, the god of longevity, wearing a robe and holding a staff.
•
While these Old Man Dollars were initially struck by revolutionist Chang Wen to compensate military units that were based on the island of #Formosa, they quickly became popular among the people as well.
•
This was primarily due to the coins’ high silver content (98% fine), making it more than just competitive with the most widely accepted coin of that time, the Spanish 8 #reales (90% fine).
•
Due to the widespread use of Old Man Dollars for trade purposes, they cannot, however, be considered a true #numismatic rarity. Yet, most of the Old Man Dollars that found their way to the market in recent years were of rather disappointing condition – precisely because they have been in extensive circulation. Also, coins of this type are often heavily chop marked to testify the silver purity.
•
Our specimen is certainly an exception to this rule as it is one of the very few in extremely fine condition, lacking chop marks that disturb the portrait of Shou. Dr. Lutz bought it in 1979 and kept it in his collection ever since. We are very proud do have auctioned off this fantastic piece of #Chinese history this spring, realizing a remarkable hammer price of €23,000 coming from an estimate of €5,000.

#bestof2017: So what do we have here? 21 solid grams of #gold, showing the haloed Agnus Dei, Lamb of God, standing over the world, holding a vexillum inscribed PAX (#peace).
•
Then look at the legend: Boy, this die-maker must have enjoyed quite a bit of wine if you consider the strangely capitalized letters in some of the words. Or is it just a #chronogram date embedded in the legend? Yeah, that makes more sense: Rearranged, the capital letters form MDCCIII meaning the coin was struck in 1703.
•
A bit of context: Such so-called #lamb #ducats of the free city of #Nuremberg were first coined during the Thirty Years War (1618-48) in 1632 as an expression of the longing for peace.
•
Due to the popularity of the coins, the city issued more series after the war ended, e.g., in 1648 but also for celebrating the turn of the century in 1700.
•
Our specimen was struck a little later to celebrate the conquest of castle Rothenberg in 1703. While it seems to be a little paradoxical that the lamb as motive of peace was used to celebrate a conquest, this conquest is often interpreted as an attempt to end hostile encounters in the context of the War of the Spanish Succession.
•
So what makes our coin so special? In this case it all boils down to size (or weight). Lamb ducats were coined in various weights, ranging from 1/32 of a ducat (a raging 0.1 grams) to single ducats or even multiples of ducats.
•
Before our spring #auction, the biggest known lamb ducats came in the weight of 5 ducats (17 grams). Our specimen now is the first known piece in 6 ducat weight, unpublished in literature. This unparalleled #rarity together with its fantastic condition and appealing motive make it a truly unique coin and explain the jump from an estimate of €20,000 to a hammer price of €36,000 in our auction.

#bestof2017: Depicting duke Ulrich von Württemberg, this #treasure from 1518/19 in the style of an Italian #testone fetched an astonishing €30,000 in our winter auction.
•
Have a look at this artistically brilliant and historically accurate #renaissance portrait: The adolescent #duke is shown with characteristic, angular facial features, frizzy hair and his #humpnose pointing to the tightly pressed lips.
•
It is certainly not far-fetched that this portrait somewhat reflects Ulrich’s character, which is often described as irascible, hot-blooded, and #narcissistic. Which story could serve as better example than the dispute with his stable master and formerly close friend, Hans von Hutten?
•
While Ulrich was married to Sabina von Bayern, he engaged in secret affairs, especially with the beautiful Ursula Thumb von Neuburg. When the latter was married to Ulrich’s stable master Hans von Hutten, Ulrich did not stop but continued visiting Ursula in intimate fashion. Finally, Ulrich even confessed to Hans his #affection for Ursula and asked for toleration of their #affair but Hans rejected and, instead, made it public.
•
Knowing Ulrich’s character and fearing his anger, Hans asked to resign. Ulrich, however, in an dishonest attempt of reconciliation, invited Hans to join him for a #hunt. Hans accepted and fate took its course: In the middle of the hunt, the fully armored Ulrich sent away all companions except Hans, hunted him down and brutally #murdered him with his sword. After the bloody deed, Ulrich put his belt around Hans’s neck and hung him at a tree, marked with his #sword.
•
Our specimen is probably the most #beautiful on the market, coming from two exciting #collections: Collection Virgil Brand (1964) and Collection Erbstein (1909).

The sale of the Dr. Lutz collection, which totaled €1.2m up from an estimate of €0.8m, was led by 3 impressive silver #coins of highest #rarity and remarkable provenance: 1// A double taler 1606 of #frankfurt ex Auktion Kricheldorf 5 (1958), selling for €57,500 up from €20,000, 2// #frankfurt’s first ever taler, coined 1547 and last up for sale in 1966, going for €48,000 (up from €30,000), and 3// A double taler 1711 of #saxony ex Auktion Schulman 229 (1957) selling for €46,000 up from €30,000 #nerdycoins #ams #auctioneering #collecting #numismatics #records
