A 1951 painting by Chinese-French artist Zao Wou-Ki (1921-2013), "Oiseaux dans les nids (Birds in the nests), "16" x 13", sold for $487,500 (including buyer’s premium) at Litchfield County Auctions in Litchfield, Connecticut, on May 20, 2017.
According to the auction house, the painting came from a local Connecticut collector who had acquired it from an estate. The seller of the estate had purchased the painting in the mid-1970s. The consignor was not aware of the artist’s reputation until the painting was brought to Litchfield County Auctions.
Conservation was performed to remove adhesives to the back of the canvas where a second signature, title, and date were discovered, and the painting was remounted onto a stretcher. A certificate of authenticity was obtained from the Fondation Zao Wou-Ki in Geneva, Switzerland, and the artist’s catalogue raisonné is being updated to reflect this recently discovered work.

Nineteenth-century artist Adolf Schreyer (German, 1828-1899) traveled extensively throughout southeastern Europe and across North Africa. This oil on canvas was very likely inspired by his travels. It depicts an Arab, perhaps a chieftain, on horseback in a barren landscape with other riders in the background. The painting is not dated, but it is signed lower right. The painting sold to an absentee bidder for $6875 (est. $7000/9000). The Potomack Company, Alexandria, April 8, 2017.
