Just discovered @ohmygollyembroidery via @jbistheinitial and I need this (hint hint it's my birthday in August) 👌

Regram from @ohmygollyembroidery: This one is back on etsy. I've listed it as made-to-order so it'll take a week or so to be sent out (depending on how many other custom orders I'm working on). Check out the link in my bio. Also, while we're on the subject, Audre was right. Your silence will not protect you. It also won't protect the NHS. It won't protect those less fortunate or less privileged than you. So use your voice/vote and get the tories out (please and thank you kindly)

I could only read these 2 pages, but I was impressed with #AudreLorde's challenge to #JamesBaldwin's assertion that everyone buys into the American dream. I love Baldwin. But she's on point here. "Deep, deep, deep down I know that dream was never mine." "Nobody was dreaming about me." - Audre Lorde

If I didn't define myself for myself, I would be crunched into other people's fantasies for me and eaten alive. -Audre Lorde
Here is where part two of my life started. A new yoga teacher changing careers midlife. I sometimes thought what the &&@ was I thinking?! Why didn't anyone stop me? Didn't I have family, lol?! Didn't I have friends who cared? What have I done? And then...and then... it would all come rushing back. I chose to take control of my own life. I took the red pill. This new direction was a u-turn into my own self. I was writing a new definition of Oneika. I remember being at Rutgers and hearing that Audre Lorde died. I felt a sense of loss that I didn't know could exist for someone I've never met. Her writing, so revolutionary and yet so inclusive and familiar forever changed me. When I teach mindfulness and yoga in jail I often think of this quote. We are more than the terrible $&@ we've done. We are more than expectations. But it wasn't until I was able to sit inside my own skin and really love every part of me was I able to embrace the woman I wanted to become. As a trauma yoga teacher it's my hope that I can create a space that lets people safely explore their own experiences and find a way to define themselves for themselves. Radical love. Radical self-love. With that in place so much is possible. #WomenWeLove: Audre Lorde was a writer, feminist, womanist, and civil rights activist. Her poems and prose largely deal with issues related to civil rights, feminism, and the exploration of black female identity. In relation to non-intersectional feminism in the United States, Lorde famously said:
👉"Those of us who stand outside the circle of this society's definition of acceptable women; those of us who have been forged in the crucibles of difference -- those of us who are poor, who are lesbians, who are Black, who are older -- know that survival is not an academic skill. It is learning how to take our differences and make them strengths. For the master's tools will never dismantle the master's house. They may allow us temporarily to beat him at his own game, but they will never enable us to bring about genuine change. And this fact is only threatening to those women who still define the master's house as their only source of support.”

"My history cannot be used to feather my enemies’ arrows then, and that lessens their power over me. Nothing I accept about myself can be used against me to diminish me. I am who am, doing what I came to do, acting upon you like a drug or a chisel to remind you of your me-ness, as I discover you in myself. "

Thinking back to a few weeks ago when I led my first workshop about journaling for #BlackWomynRising! We shared, laughed, and meditated as we talked about writing for your life - really using this tool as a way to cultivate radial love and self care, particularly in a society which wants to erase the truths and experiences of Black Womyn and girls. Oh it was so powerful connecting with these sistas! 💕

If you've been following me for a bit or we're friends, you know I care deeply about transforming the world and speaking out against injustice. #BlackWomynRising is an org. I helped to found with several amazing and beautiful sistas. We are about building power for poor & working class Black Womyn and girls at the #grassroots
level. While we're based in Baltimore, our hearts are global; we see sistahood as not defined by a single location. 💕

Another part of our work is wrestling with how these current power systems impact us, and cultivating change, beginning first with ourselves.✊🏾 "When I dare to be powerful, to use my strength in the service of my vision, then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid." - #audrelorde 💕

Audre Lorde was a black writer, feminist, womanist, lesbian, and civil rights activist. She is best known for technical mastery and emotional expression, as well as her poems that express anger and outrage at civil and social injustices she observed throughout her life. Her poems and prose largely deal with issues related to civil rights, feminism, and the exploration of black female identity. In relation to non-intersectional feminism in the United States, Lorde famously said, "Those of us who stand outside the circle of this society's definition of acceptable women; those of us who have been forged in the crucibles of difference -- those of us who are poor, who are lesbians, who are Black, who are older -- know that survival is not an academic skill. It is learning how to take our differences and make them strengths. For the master's tools will never dismantle the master's house. They may allow us temporarily to beat him at his own game, but they will never enable us to bring about genuine change. And this fact is only threatening to those women who still define the master's house as their only source of support." (Art via @mollycrabapple ✨)

“Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.” — Audre Lorde (Burst of Light: Essays)
*********************************************
I usually teach summer school. Every May, I update my resume. I apply for the job. I get an interview. I accept the job. I teach Black children. My heart smiles. I push my dreams aside. I'm exhausted. I just wanna sleep. I'm hustling for someone else's dream. **************************************************
This year, I withdrew myself from the job competition. I did it because I love myself. Imma spend the entire summer writing and dancing and dreaming.
*********************************************
Dreamchasers, I have a hard time saying ‘no' to others. How do you do it?

"...if I know anything, it’s that we come from a long line of chain breakers. We will be free, but first we have to hold strong and we have to fight. Please believe me when I say this is the sacred calling of our people—to break all chains. We will break all chains, and we will set the future free. Of this, I have absolutely no doubt. After all, if history teaches us anything, that’s what people like us do. So, let us not forget what Audre Lorde taught us: ‘We were never meant to survive.’ And, yet, we did.
.
"In honor of those survivances—in honor of everyone who comes before and everyone who comes after—let us who were never meant to survive remember that with each breath we take is a “f*ck you” to colonialism. Each breath is a “f*ck you” to patriarchy. Each breath is the sound of chains breaking. Each breath is, in its own way, a revolution."

Each breath is, in its own way, a revolution." . What happened in Manchester is a terrible thing. A deliberate act of cruel violence against our children and friends. But we cannot forget who we are and where we stand. United. Fierce. Together.
Don't let fear, grief and pain divide us. Don't let mainstream narratives encapsulate us in a world with no shades, where difference is perceived as a threat or not perceived at all. We are different. We are many. We are complex and multifaceted human beings. Cherish our difference and claim our togetherness.
Let's celebrate the Other because it's us.

"I am hungry for Black women who will not turn from me in anger and contempt even before they know me or hear what I have to say. I am hungry for Black women who will not turn away from me even if they do not agree with what I say. We are, after all, talking about different combinations of the same borrowed sounds.

"As Black women, we have wasted our angers too often, buried them, called them someone else's, cast them wildly into oceans of racism and sexism from which no vibration resounded, hurled them into each other's teeth and then ducked to avoid the impact." -#AudreLorde, Eye to Eye

"One Black woman sits and silently judges another, how she looks, how she acts, how she impresses others. The first woman's scales are weighted against herself. She is measuring the impossible. She is measuring the self she does not fully want to be. She does not want to accept the contradictions, nor the beauty. She wishes the other woman would go away. She wishes the other woman would become someone else, anyone other than another Black woman. She has enough trouble dealing with being herself. 'Why don't you learn to fly straight,' she says to the other woman. 'Don't you understand what your poor showing says about us all? If I could fly I'd certainly do a better job than that. Can't you put on a more together show? The white girls do it. Maybe we could get one to show you how.' The other woman cannot speak. She is too busy keeping herself from crashing upon the ground. She will not cry the tears which are hardening into little sharp stones that spit from her eyes and implant themselves in the first woman's heart, who quickly heals over them and identifies them as the source of her pain." -from Eye to Eye, an essay by #AudreLorde ••• "This is not a hobby or a show. Friends in Glasgow, Nicole Miller’s “Believing is Seeing (Ndinda)” (2013) has been included in the screening “it feels right to me” presented by LUX Scotland at the Glasgow Film Theatre. Wednesday’s screening starts at 8:45PM. “This screening programme brings together live performance with artist moving image in a transatlantic coupling to explore multiple interpretations of Eros in contemporary art practice, with works from Kimberley O’Neill, Danielle Dean and Ursula Mayer among others. Positioning the event within the female experience and gathering the artworks under three erotic propositions; pleasure, perversion, and assembly, the selected artists use ‘worldbuilding’ or in-between states to focus on Eros’ capabilities as a life force and as a mechanism of dissent.” #NicoleMiller #BelievingisSeeingNdinda #itfeelsrighttome #LUXScotland #GlasgowFilmTheatre #GayleMeikle #KimberleyONeill #JacolbySatterwhite #DanielleDean #UrsulaMayer #NicolaSingh #ErosinContemporaryArt #AudreLorde #SisterOutsider
