“And when the sun rises we are afraid
it might not remain
when the sun sets we are afraid
it might not rise in the morning
when our stomachs are full we are afraid
of indigestion
when our stomachs are empty we are afraid
we may never eat again
when we are loved we are afraid
love will vanish
when we are alone we are afraid
love will never return
and when we speak we are afraid
our words will not be heard
nor welcomed
but when we are silent
we are still afraid

So it is better to speak
remembering
we were never meant to survive.” ― Audre Lorde, The Black Unicorn: Poems

“Our real power comes from the personal; our real insights about living come from that deep knowledge within us that arises from our feelings. Our feelings are most genuine paths to knowledge. They are chaotic, sometimes painful, sometimes contradictory, but they come from deep within us. We must key into those feelings and extract from them new ways of understanding our experiences. This is how new visions begin and how we can begin to envision a future which is nourished by the past.” - #AudreLorde.

“Those of us who stand outside the circle of this society's definition of acceptable women; those of us who have been forged in the crucibles of difference -- those of us who are poor, who are lesbians, who are Black, who are older -- know that survival is not an academic skill. It is learning how to take our differences and make them strengths. For the master's tools will never dismantle the master's house. They may allow us temporarily to beat him at his own game, but they will never enable us to bring about genuine change. And this fact is only threatening to those women who still define the master's house as their only source of support.” – Audre Lorde

Audre Lorde, who died twenty-five years ago today, was a self-described “Black lesbian mother warrior poet,” best known as a leader in Black feminist thought and for her analyses of the intersectional nature of all oppression.
.
While Lorde’s first volume of poetry, “The First Cities” (1968), was well-received, it was in her second volume, “Cables to Rage” (1970), that Lorde began to explore the themes that defined her work: “violence, hunger, cloaks of lies, dishonest silences, struggle for voice, faith in the capacity to love, growth through dreams, desperate hope and defiance amid dying and loss, and painful birthing.” With “The Cancer Journals” (1980), Lorde published the first major prose work to make visible the perspective of a lesbian of color, and “Zami: A New Spelling of My Name” (1982) further established her as a writer of nearly unparalleled breadth.
.
“Throughout all of Audre Lorde’s writing, both nonfiction and fiction, a single theme surfaces repeatedly,” Allison Kimmich wrote. “The black lesbian feminist poet activist reminds her readers that they ignore differences among people at their peril… Instead, Lorde suggests, differences in race or class must serve as a ‘reason for celebration and growth.’”
.
Audre Lorde died of liver cancer on November 17, 1992; she was 58. Before her death, she took the name Gamba Adisa, which means "Warrior: She Who Makes Her Meaning Known." #AudreLorde #Resist

The quote of the day by those who left today

It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences.

Audre Lorde (February 18, 1934 – November 17, 1992) was a writer, feminist, womanist, librarian, and civil rights activist. As a poet, she is best known for technical mastery and emotional expression, as well as her poems that express anger and outrage at civil and social injustices she observed throughout her life. Her poems and prose largely deal with issues related to civil rights, feminism, and the exploration of black female identity.

We shall not push and hush those who are fighting the exact battle we share
Instead, we shall inspire and mend eachothers aching souls
🌸
Let us not share thoughts and words of degradation, but thoughts and words of wisdom, love, and acceptance
🌸
Each of us carry a struggle that is unique to our life and all that comes with it
We are all women.
We are all deserving.

We are all equal🌈🌸💕 #AudreLorde #quote #women #sisters #sisterhood #woman #feminist #femininity #love #cultures #wisdom #bopo #oppression #writing #emotion #peaceloveandpositivity #lovetheskinyourein

Jah and Jahnes love. I love the eroticism which Picasso portrays in this painting. So wish I understood why she is two different Colors. And this is work is part of the 1932 "year erotique"that are currently exposed at the Muses Picasso in Paris. I have to go check it out. As one of my dearest pals put it, finally a proud moment to be an Australian! 🏳️‍🌈💕
This is just the beginning and we still need #CONSTANTVIGILANCE. I'm so here for the unrestrained emotional heart wrenching joy of acknowledging what this symbolises (not that my opinion really matters here as a str80 cis binch). But let's not be deluded into (even more) complacency. This gov still fails many ppl who are trans, nonbinary, or queer. This gov is still responsible for ongoing suffering, incarceration, and systemic marginalisation of many. I've been licked in the anus too many times already by self congratulatory faux-(pro)gressive 'allies' who'll happily take up space in this movement, but won't lift a finger for any other systems of oppression (which directly intersect with these issues anyway!!) and actually directly contribute to them daily. Anyway pls don't take this as me shitting on anything, I'm so happy about this outcome and so happy for everyone who can now smile after being subjected to this silly distraction of this 'survey'... that is all, ily. 🏳️‍🌈✨🌹
