We are ALL people deserving of love and equal rights. Let's keep the momentum. Revolution is not a one time event. #audrelorde #humanrights #TransRightsAreHumanRights
In light of Trump's baseless and frightening ban on transgender Americans serving in the military, all proceeds from our Values t-shirts from tomorrow's show will go to the Audre Lorde Project. They're just $10 each, so grab yours and donate if you can. Go to www.alp.org to learn more, especially about their TransJustice program, which provides safe spaces for trans and gender non-conforming people of color to mobilize their communities and allies into action.

"...to my sisters of Color who like me still tremble their rage under harness, or who sometimes question the expression of our rage as useless and disruptive (the two most popular accusations) - I want to speak about anger, my anger and what I have learned from my travels through its dominions. Every woman has a well-stocked arsenal of anger potentially useful against those oppressions, personal and institutional, which brought that anger into being. Focused with precision it can be become a powerful source of energy serving progress and change. And when I speak of change, I do not mean a simple switch of positions or a temporary lessening of tensions, nor the ability to smile and feel good. I am speaking of a basic and radical alteration of those assumptions underlying our lives. " - Audre Lorde

For those of us who are outraged at the most recent attacks on our trans kin, I want to offer a loving reminder...If we continue to offer the same approach, we will get the same results. 🔸
::[Survival] is learning how to stand alone, unpopular and sometimes reviled, and how to make common cause with those others identified as outside the structures in order to define and seek a world in which we can all flourish. It's learning how to take our differences and make them strengths. For the master's tools will never dismantle the master's house. They may allow us temporarily to beat him at his own game, but they will never allow us to bring about genuine change.::Audre Lorde.
🔸
Trans communities, especially those currently in the military and trans folks of color and those with different abilities, are in danger. C’mon y’all, this is not about trans folks being disallowed from serving in the military, it is about whether or not they are allowed to exist. It is about their right to exist as it is about your right to exist. We have a great well within from which we draw strength and knowledge - experience. Each of us knows what it is not to fit in, to be rejected, to be different. Do not support another's annihilation as you would not support your own. Your time will come, if it hasn’t already. Do not wait for a knock on your front door before you take action. 🔸
What Donald Trump has done is give permission to fearful hearts to act on that hatred and fear under the cover of democracy and patriotism. This man only preaches democracy and patriotism when it increases his power over others and ability to control the conversation. He calls on our fear because he knows we respect it more than our experience. Risk your popularity. Be brave. Be fierce. Be strong. Be love. Feel the fear and do it anyway.

Audre Lorde is one of the fiercest women to ever grace this planet. She used her words to fight homophobia, sexism, and racism in a way that is both beautiful and powerful. Audre channeled her emotions into her writing and it shows. When I read her poems, I feel like I'm hit in the face and hugged at the same time. Audre was an activist, a poet, a mother, and an inspiration for women everywhere. // this is my second entry for the @ligaturecollective #WomenOfLetters competition 🌺

And for the sake of argument, (because that's not what this post is about), here is where the frustration comes in: those who were killed controversially by officers, those deaths that sparked protests & riots, where the officers were either never charged with the killings, or when they were charged, they were not convicted, sends a dangerous message & does nothing but divide communities. #RIPAmadouDiallo #RIPManuelLogginsJr #RIPRonaldMadison #RIPKendraJames #RIPSeanBell #RIPBrendonGlenn #RIPGregoryGunn #RIPNatashaMcKenna #RIPEzellFord #RIPAkaiGurley #RIPLaquanMcDonald #RIPTamirRice #RIPYvetteSmith #RIPJamarClark #RIPRekiaBoyd and many more. Colorism healing is self-empowerment. Yes, there are structures and systems in place that perpetuate the color hierarchy that we need to dismantle. But as long as the oppressor lives within us, we will never fully commit to totally destroying it. Birth can sometimes feel like death, but we must emerge.

{INTERNATIONAL SELF-CARE DAY} // "I have come to believe that caring for myself is not self-indulgent. Caring for myself is an act of survival." #AudreLorde
•
This day presents a great opportunity to break down self-care, a commonly used and sometimes misinterpreted concept in the #wellness and #mentalhealth world. Perhaps the idea seems easy enough, but what does that actually look like? And why is it important? And what if you have spent your whole life taking care of others or neglecting yourself because you don't think you need it or are worth it?
•
Melissa A. Fabello of #EverydayFeminism defines #selfcare as “any set of practices that makes you feel nourished, whether that’s physically, emotionally, spiritually, all of the above.” It's a personal set of strategies for managing stress and regaining a sense of ease and #balance. Some of these strategies might be tangible- cooking at home, calling a friend, curtailing your social media use. Other strategies might be less concrete: cultivating #mindfulness , building a support network, slowing down. I think of it as putting your own oxygen mask on first.
•
What isn't self-care? Self-care is not an excuse for shirking responsibility, or for not showing up, or for being out of integrity. Sometimes taking care of yourself actually means doing the hard thing- telling the truth, owning your mistakes and discretions, being there because you said you would be.
•
Self-care is also not a privilege. I've seen some provocative articles on the topic of self-care and #socialjustice , which discuss the way that the self-care movement has become synonymous with affluence and an abundance of time and money, a luxury many communities are not afforded. This article offers some thoughtful ways to "ground self-care in an ethics of intersectionality", such as building awareness of the systems and structural influences that prevent wellness in the first place; https://advice.shinetext.com/articles/3-things-you-should-know-about-intersectionality-and-self-care/
•
What are your thoughts on self-care, on self-care and social justice, on strategies that work for you or things you'd like to incorporate?
